Awaiting stamp, then the beer can goes on it. I have a conical one too, but I seem to have misplaced it at the moment. Fun little gun. Runs like a cartoon pancake from a fat kid. Just put the rail and H1 on it last week as well.

Thanks. It is an area that few know about. I always have it to myself. I’m trying to figure out what AO means, but just can’t make heads or tails of it. What is AO?

AO = Area of Operations
Thank you. Now that I know, I’ve seen it used before, but it didn’t stick. It should stick now.
The “AO” in my photo is a very little known place at the end of a dead end road that is almost not visible from the main road, which is just a little used logging road in itself. It’s a small area, but I’ve got a line of site brushed out to 50 yards, and it would take about an hour of work to get it out to 100 yards, which I’ll probably do this winter. The table is set at about 50 feet for the pumpkin shoot.

Looks to be a standard MAK-90 that had Bulgarian or K-Var US made Bulgarian black synthetic stock set installed.
You can fit Euro AKM stock sets to Chinese stamped rifles, but they require a fair amount of fitting, especially the tang of the stock as it engages the rear trunnion.

That had crossed my mind, but I thought an MAK receiver had an angled rear wall?
Some do but most I have seen are straight.

Templar is right. Just a standard MAK-90 with a US made K-Var stock.

The bad thing about wood is it looks great. When you scratch it you get upset! :D
I took the wood off mine. If you want wood, get a second rifle to put it on, then don't play rough with it, lol. (at least, that's how I'd have to do it. I like the plastic cuz I don't care if it's scratched :) )

Romanian WASR AK-47...
I painted it flat black, sanded and worked on the stocks with a dark mahogany finish. Also polished the bolt carrier, cut the welded barrel nut off and replaced with a muzzle slant, and replaced standard grip with a Hogue grip; with the standard OD sling.

The US Palms are going great for me. No hiccups or issues so far. I've been using them almost exclusively since September. I'd really like to take a rifle class with it and put them through some harder testing, but they've survived everything I've done to them so far.

Good looking stuff guys. Gotta love a Khyber Pass rifle.
Here's my Arsenal SLR-106F.
Just got it back from Arsenal a few days ago, and it appears to have a feed ramp now. Dummy rounds feed ok, so I'm cautiously optimistic, but haven't fired it yet.
Special thanks to Templar for the advice on the feed ramp issue, and to VA Arms for taking care of me after the purchase (of a consignment gun, no less.)

I'm new here guys. Glad to see my membership was finally approved. Thanks for that. I have been very active on the AKForum.net. IMO, it is a very professional forum. I like the rules there and how they're run. I have lurked here before because of the high level of professional info available when I got into AR's a while back. Just now finding I want to jump into some of the conversations though, so I signed up.
I was a very busy home builder a few years back. Now that kits aren't cheap, I wanted to rebuild the ones I had done on home built flats on the excellent NDS receivers. Here's my last build (Rebuild?) I did as well as a modernized Khyber Pass I built a while back when NDS first came out with their KP receiver.

The all black one is my first KP build. Romy G. KVAR furniture, Ultimak and Bushnell red dot, SS Tapco GP, Russian sling, G2 and USA brake, Bulgy SF. Home made hot blued finish on blasted/beaded parts for a matte black finish. Its a fine shooter at 100 yards too.
I liked it so much that when I rebuilt a Hungarian UF I had done on a flat, I demilled it and rebuilt it on a NDS-1KP receiver. Used the well hated DPH folder on this one. (They just needed some hand fitting of the pin and some de-burring of edges. Brace the trunnion with a small piece of steel as you set the top long rivet and it's good to go. I couldn't believe the fuss guys made over these. I like it!) Semi gloss black moly resin finish over freshly blasted steel. You can see the differences in the stocks in the photos. Matte black is Bulgy. Semi gloss black is DPH. The DPH stock functions perfectly. More KVAR furniture hand fitted to the odd Hungy HG mounts. G2 and USA brake. Russian sling. I'm really happy with how it came out. Great shooter at 25 yards. I need to take it to a 100 yard range next.
You can see I enjoy building and tinkering even more than range time. It was fun assembling a couple AR's and getting them just so. But the AK platform is a real "build" project. I love metal work!
I'll look forwards to hanging out here more often now! You have a great board here.
Glad to see you here my friend

Looks like a nice pair of rifles you have there.
Welcome aboard.
Did your SAR-1 shoot any differently? Thanks.
It's still currently being worked on. The original front sight needed tons of adjustment for windage, and I'm pretty sure the Bolton gas/sight block will improve on that. Another big plus is some weight savings and shortening the overall barrel length. Go to Jim's website and take a look at what he builds. Serious builds for serious people.

I've been meaning to post a picture of my SGL-21 for a while now...
It wears the original Arsenal/K-Var black poly furniture with a Warsaw length buttstock, and a US Palm pistol grip. It is also setup with an Ultimak M1-B, and a Streamlight Polytac LED in a VLTOR Off-set Scout Mount. Sling is a BFG Victory series.
http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee144/BDHershey/IMG_7199.jpg
I also just picked up a Draco "C" Pistol to SBR...
It is wearing a KVAR upper Handguard and Bulgy lower handguard with heatshield, a US Palm pistol grip, and I replaced the muzzle nut with a US Made A1 style flash hider. It will eventually get an ACE Sidefolding buttstock once the paperwork comes through and an Ultimak/White Light setup like the SGL. For compliance purposes it will also get a new FCG but I haven't decided what yet (G2, Arsenal single stage, Texas AK trigger).
The SGL and maybe the Draco will both get Aimpoint H-1's when funds allow.

Here's a build I completed the other day. Just a KISS Romy G. OD KVAR furniture. I like the light weight and balance these give the rifle. G2 FCG. USA AR style brake. Yeah, I know.... An AR part! But they are quite functional, so I used it. Fitted a RPK rear sight too because I like the windage adjustability. This was a unissued kit with just a few flecks of rust. Great fodder for a build. Used a NDS receiver and AKB rivets and tools. Welded and riveted on a siderail for future red dot use. Finish is semi gloss black Moly resin over freshly blasted steel. I even refinish the screws and the stock hardware. This one is pretty close to perfect IMO.
I refinished the stock wood and it's hardware too. I'll just put it away in case I want to use it some day.

what stock are you going to go with on the Draco?
Still trying to decide. I'm leaning hardest toward and ACE folding mechanism and either a short ACE stock or their AR adapter and an IMOD.
I'm still wringing it out before I complete the SBR paperwork.
Have a smith install a bulgarian/russian skeleton or polymer sidefolder. Might as well use the best.

I just a Stormwerkz stock adapter and a DPH stock for my build. Both seem really sound. Order my ultimak m7-B last night. When it gets here I'm going to ship it off to Jim Fuller to let him and the Rifle Dynamics crew fix it up and convert it to a SBR for me.

Why the Stormwerkz versus the ACE?
The stormwerkz locks in the folded position. I heard the ace does not.
My first AK that is surprisingly well built along with matching serial numbers on the bolt, carrier/piston, and receiver.

Here are three of my AKs. All were built by Derek at AZEX, who is a great guy to deal with.
The first is an Bulgy AK74 "Krink" on a nodak receiver with Tapco trigger group.
Next is a Bulgy AK74 with original furniture (except pistol grip) and numbers matching kit with original barrel, Nodak receiver, and Tapco trigger.
Finally is a Romy G build on a Nodak. The furniture is Timbersmith, but I still have the original should I decide to refinish it later.
Only rifle I've shot is the Krink, and sadly only for one day before I had to return from leave. I haven't even seen the other two, they were picked up by my wife while I've been OCONUS.
I have one more being built by him, that will be a modern poly side folder build on my last Romy G kit.

I've had no heat problems. I've shot this rifle to about 6 mags back to back and had no issues. I was able to hold the rifle comfortably and the optic worked fine.
I have done a simple test which I posted a video about, here:

I compared the heat build-up between the MI rail and the Ultimak.
I'll do another test this summer when it's hotter than Hell outside and see how things go.

Does that MI rail give cowitness? I've been out of the AK game for a while now, but the last time I checked, Ultimak was the only practical way to get AK cowitness. If so, thats a pretty cool product

Is that the one they have over on AtlanticFirearms? If so, I'm curious in what condition the barrel is in. I know Will makes great stuff, but there are limits as to what one can do with the parts that are available.

The barrel is a new US made chrome lined barrel. It's flawless looking. I'll know how it shoots in a few days and I'll post a full video review.
Oh, and yup - it's from Atlantic Firearms.

Its a Century build (believe me I know...) AK-74. And even though its a Century AK it shoots straight and goes bang every time. I can hit 1 liter bottles at 115ish yards all day long so I've got no complaints.... must've gotten lucky.
I did change out the stock, handguards, and pistol grip for original Bulgarian surplus that I refinished in a mix of redwood and walnut stain. ;)

Thanks! Yes, I did the bluing, there's a small amount of pitting on the left side of the receiver, but other than that, it came out fine.
Hadn't looked at the gun in years, thought it was going to be worse off than it turned out to be.
Glad to have it back in order... just wish I had been able to recover the 2 Chinese drums, mags and 1000 rounds of ammo that I had for it back then.

My SAR1 Romanian. I don't particularly like shiny lacquer finishes, so with much sanding, and a coat of boiled Linseed oil, it looks more real life to me.
I picked up what is supposed to be an original leather Ak47 Romanian sling. From what I can tell they used them on some 47s, but not on the SKS'.

Out of curiosity, what's the benefit of moving the front sight back to the gas block? The AK's sight radius is short as it is.

Moves some weight back from the end of the gun and, supposedly, has a positive influence on accuracy. I would guess that since a TWS dust cover is being used that the issue is moot, since the TWS is designed to be used with a dust cover-mounted rear sight, akin to the Galil and Valmet.

Weight/balance reasons mostly. I was surprised what a change it made when I was first introduced to the design.
As already noted, using a TWS cover negates some of the sight radius issue, allowing a rear sight to be mounted on the top cover while retaining zero. TWS is planning a flip up BUIS, which if it turns out as well as their top cover I'll use on my AK. The optic holds zero on the platform rather well.

The main reason is to be able to have a shorter barrel such as the AK105 series and still have a front sight.
Cheers
AKs are just range toys for me. I never fired an AK wit a red dot on it before. I had an extra red dot lying around so I decided to mount it on my Tantal. BOY WHAT A DIFFERENCE! It takes a bit getting used to because there is no real cheek weld on this rifle but once the dot was dialed in, it was pure fun!

Well I finally fitted the stock.
It is mostly finished, I still need to replace the fcg spring with a plate and try to find a set of working night sights for it. Other than that it is finished. US parts are: G2 FCG(3), k-var stock and handguards(2), TAPCO piston(1). This is about as "practical" as I will ever get on an AK.

I just finished this walnut set from IWD. It was my first time at this, but I’m happy with the outcome except for one glitch. I cracked the first upper hand guard in half trying to install it on the piston gas tube. That’s what I get for trying to force it on and not fitting it before I finished it. That rookie mistake cost me because I had to buy a new one and even thought I did the exact same finishing technique the replacement came out a little darker. I found staining directions on another forum that I liked. I started with betadine and applied 3 coats. Then I applied 2 coats of Cabot’s red mahogany stain cut with mineral spirits at a 3:1 ratio. Finally I sealed it with 4 coats of Formby’s low gloss Tung Oil Finish.

By the way, if you're ever looking for someone to do some finishing work for you, Z_recto on theakforum.net does an excellent job.
Can't remember where I got mine, but there are boatloads of them on ebay.
Now that you mention it, I see a lot of them on the AK Forum as well.

I always liked laminate a bit better.

I finally finished these two so I have to show them off.
Both were built by me on Nodak Spud premium receivers with AK builder rivets and finished with manganese phosphate parkerizing.

The first is a 1982 Romy G with Russian selector markings on the receiver. The compliance parts are Arsenal OD furniture, Hogue Grip, phantom style flash hider, & G2 FCG.
(this photo is before I swapped the ergo grip for the hogue)

The second is a Hungarian AMMS with Hungarian selector markings on the receiver. The compliance parts are the gas piston, slant brake, and G2 FCG. The receiver, bolt carrier, and locking lug piece for the folder will be painted to match the original finish on the rest of the parts (probably semi gloss alumihyde)

This is an SGL21 with some refinishing, selector markings, and Russian side folder installed. All the work was done by Troy at In Range.

I really like those Manticore flash hiders. Too bad they don't make an extended one for us 12.5" carbine guys who dont want to go NFA.
