Here is my Norinco MAK-90 that has been modified with ACE Ltd. parts including internal tang block and side folder stock, A2 rear sight and pic rail drilled and tapped into front trunion, gas tube mounted front sight with A2 post, barrel chopped to 14.5" and re-threaded with permanently attached Vortex flash hider for compliance. Glenn Riddle from Magnum Gunsmithing completed the work and refinished the carbine including the bolt in satin black Gunkote. Shown with Aimpoint ML2, Ace cheekweld adapter and TAG single point sling. This by far my favorite AK.

No problem my friend, it would be my pleasure to square you away. Believe it or not, our two rifles arrived on the same truck I'm sure. Bring it Thursday and we will fix her right up.
I missed you guys too. It was a crappy day at work and I got out real late.

Thanks Templar. Looking at your collection, that means a lot!!!

Well it's true Jbar, great job  . I don't have the patience to do stuff like that, wish I did.
New toy I picked up yesterday, a Vector built on an Armory USA receiver with a matching Polish AKM parts kit and very early East German side folder.

Templar.....I was lucky enough to know the seller and see the rifle shot on a couple of occasions which is why I didn't mind buying an "affordable" WASR-10. I hope that I am fortunate enough to run into a milled receiver as a collectable and keep my WASR as a fun gun to go shoot at our 3-gun or 2-gun matches. The pure rifle matches will be reserved for my ARs. Thanks for all the AK posts!!! Like many, I have enjoyed the education and look forward to heating up the barrel later this week.

I love those AKS-47's with the spike bayo.....I've had a couple over the years and the Polytech quality is damn hard to beat.
Your sidefolder is the second one I've seen AR-15A3, I have a good friend who has one as well.
Very rare rifle indeed.

Very nice.
This thread is hurting my Com-bloc fever.
I'm on the market for a couple of add ons for the collection.
Thanks for your comments Templar and ArchAngel.
The sidefolder are a rare model and from what I have found out from a few sources, the estimated numbers imported to the US were only about 200 to 400.
I have recently seen mostly all PolyTech models including this rare sidefolder from excellent to NIB condition in several sites like GunsAmerica, GunBroker.com and others, they are available in the market.
My other AK that I don't have a picture yet is a PolyTech sidefolder with red plastic stock, I'll post it here later when I have the time.
Back in '89 I sold my PolyTech downfolder in like new condition to my long time friend who can't find one in his area, so I'm short of that model and the machined receiver Legend models which I almost got but didn't (my bad mistake).
I'm also still trying to add the models I like to my collection, it's a never ending cycle. :p

This looks like the Ak I took off a Kuwaiti in 91, our CO told us that the Armorer was gonna drill them for us to take home as trophies, then Division shows up and says, " we are collecting all indiginous weapons to take back as training aides" so my A-gunner and me held both ends of it and pulled it around a tree. I delivered it to division and drew lots of laughs, it was almost a perfect 90 degree angle!
I will try to dig up a picture.

Me and LCpl Turner in Southern Kuwait with our captured weapons. Tuner with MP5A4 and Me with Romy AK-47, the one I bent around the tree. I was 20 years old, and 80 pounds lighter :) (1991)
Edit: We gave the MP5 to our Kuwaiti Interpreter, a Kuwaiti Policeman we called "Brownie" because he wore a Browning Hi-Power in a WW2 era leather chest holster. He loved it, later he used it to shoot a bunch of Iraqi Prisoners we had captured. He waited til we were asleep and shot them, our firewatch almost shot him as well. Pretty twisted.

FYI - We need to set up a range trip.
Those photos of yours have me drooling for some more range time at Cavalier.
I have an application to Cavalier already filled out and signed by a co-worker willing to sponsor me as a member. I just cannot justify the expense because the range is so far away from home - yet so close to my work.
RE:Cavalier...........send the paperwork in.
We're capped at 600 members and we don't have many slots left.
We need more evil black gun people in vs. benchresters, blackpowder, and skeet guys.
And you get to shoot at 300 and 500 yards......
Unfortunately, not all of these are mine.
A couple of buddies and myself made it to the range today.
Lots of Arsenal Inc. and AK-USA builds....

Templar,
Went to the range yesterday and fired 160 rds of Wolf ball steel case ammo (the only one available around here in 7.62 x 39) Not a single hiccup. Thanks anyway for your advise. For future reference, what kind of European military mags? Steel or plastic?
Thanks for your feedback.
Shoot as much steel cased stuff through that rifle as you want, that's what the rifle is designed for.
The cool thing about AK's is that ANY of the military magazines will fit and function fine.
I personally prefer the Bulgarian polymer "waffle" magazines.....just as tough as a steel magazine, and much lighter. They're current Bulgarian military magazine, and would look damn good in that SAS M7. :D
Just make sure it's a real Bulgarian, not a Pro-Mag knock off.
Bulgarian military magazines will have a double circle 10 molded on the mag.

Very nice Nick!
Thank you Sir. This is my first AK, and I know it is about as "UN-traditional" an AK as you can have, but this thing feels very handy with the ACE side-folder, and the Ultimak & LaRue/Pride-Fowler "IronDot" seems like it was designed for this rifle. I'm looking forward to taking it to the range next week to try it out.
Started out with a GP WASR10. I added OD green furniture from KVAR, then a XS front sight, then the Vickers sling both from Tactical Response Gear, then the Surefire M83 and Magpul rail covers from Adco, then the Surefire 6P with Z32 in a Viking Tactics mount from Grant, then the ML2 and ring from a local dealer, and finally the SWIFT lever from Brownells.

http://images14.fotki.com/v371/photos/2/23676/170464/100_1901-vi.jpg
I went with the polymer furniture because I wanted something more weather resistant than wood. XS sight is nice because it gives me a tritium front as well as it's easier for me to pick up than the stock sight. Vickers sling is a better sling for me than the issue sling. The M83 enables me to mount a light and optic as well as not burn my fingertips anymore (I find the stock handguards run hotter and wanted something that could allow me to keep my hands completely off the handguard cap or another part). The 6P and Z32 is adequate light for indoors or within 30 yards, and the Viking Tactics mount puts the light where I can activate it with my offhand thumb, without changing my grip on the foreend. I had the Aimpoint already (prefer EOTechs on my ARs), and with it, and a 100 yard zero, I can shoot it as well as an AR. The SWIFT lever is for matches mainly, where the SOs want me to have a bolt hold open of some sort.

I got my first AK a couple of weeks ago and couldn't stand for it to look so AKish. A coat of Duracoat Socom and some stain for the wood made her more presentable.

Lancaster AKM RS. My first and only AK at the moment. Shoots great and I'm making changes to it. The AR ACE stock will be going on the AK soon as I am not a fan of the AK wood stocks. They look good but I can't get a comfortable weld or shoulder rest. Nice....nice bruise on my shoulder after puttin about 150 rounds downrange. Basically the bottom tip of the buttplate was grinding into my shoulder. Anyways...other than that...I LOVE IT!!!
My next AK will be a Tantal!
and flame suit on for all the traditionalists....:p

thanks templar - it's a hungarian SA85M - i've had it probably more than 10 years old now. put one of the first gen ACE folders on it (when they were still using SAW buttstocks), and drilled through the receiver/stock adapter block to install the rear sling loop (i'm a lefty). replaced the rear sight with a mojo aperture, stuck a galil grip on it (more comfy for me), and that's 'bout it.
It's really hard to beat the Hungarians for a quality AK.

I've since changed it so the folder folds to the left instead. Much better.
Here are my latest additions. The bottom one is a Saiga conversion in 7.62 x 39 with an ACE side folder and CAA 6-position collapsible stock. The only thing left to do is thread the barrel for a compensator. The upper one is a Lancaster AK-47T. Now that I have the Saiga, I may backfit the Lancaster with some Ironwood Designs wood furniture...we'll see.

Nice! The H1 looks good - how do you like it compared to the C3? I'm tempted to try one on my BP-02 mount. What is the distance from the top of the rail to the center of the glass? It seems the H1 sits lower than the C3 in a low ring...

I thought I had tried the H1 before on the Ultimak but I guess I had tried the H1 w/LaRue mount, it won't cowitness with the LaRue mount (it's taller).
I don't know the distance from top of the rail to the optical center.
Yesterday I measured the (HOB = height-of-the-center of the optic-over-center-of-bore) on the H1/106 and it's 2 3/8" on the C3/SAR1 it's 2.5" so the H1 is actually a little lower than the C3 by 1/8".
Jay Cunningham

On my SLR-106 FR w/UltiMAK the T-1 cowitnesses higher in the optic than with a Comp M2.
It seems to me that the Aimpoint Micro series is pretty much the perfect optic to use on an UltiMAK mount. It is pricey, but if it's worth it to you it's the way to go.
I'd love to re-take Larry's class with this optic mounted - my rifle is pretty much the same arrangement as Rob's. It seems like a winning combo. I am just experimenting with attachment points for the sling now.

That is excellent. I'm at about 2-3/4" with my set-up.
I just changed out the Aimpoint ring today to a non-QD version, which lowered the scope a bit. I need to take a photo of the new ring tomorrow, but here is the Aimpoint X ring (low) on the BP-02, which measures .594" between the bottom of the objective lens and the top of the cover. The new ring brings it down to .556" - will post a photo tomorrow.

Some photos of my updated AK-103k. I have installed the Tapco SAW grip and installed a lower ring on the Aimpoint.
I like the feel of the SAW grip, but it had some sharp edges on the back from the mold. Once I removed the sharp edges, the color of the plastic underneath was different so I painted the grip with black Rust-Oleum Specialty Textured Paint for Plastic. This paint works fantastic on plastic furniture!

I just left my local shop and I never really thought about an AK until recently... I can say that my next purchases will include an AK (or 3) and a M&P 45 pistol with night sights. I got to fondle a few Arsenals and I can tell why they cost almost twice as much. They just seem to be built much better. They also had a few Romanians and Yugos. The Romanian with the "blonde" wood stock was beautiful.

When I read your thread on how to modify the BP-02 mount (https://www.m4carbine.net/showthread.php?t=7735) it was inspiring. Your rifles look fantastic and your setup is sweet. I thank you for sharing you work with the community and helping others who are frustrated with current mount designs.

Frag, my pleasure! I can't take credit for the idea as I saw a photo of a BP-02 modified by a member of another site. He used a Russian optic, and since I already had the BP-02 with an Aimpoint, I thought the modification would be worth a try. It worked out well and I decided to share the details with other AK owners.

This is my one and only ak at present. I built it from a Romanian G kit and a Nodak receiver.
http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h184/macddesign/2nd-ak-build.jpg
I added an Ultimak gas tube rail and an Aimpoint Comp M2 4moa to the Arsenal Inc. SLR-106FR. A light will be added this week with a LaRue qd offset ring.
I used a Springfield Armory 30mm ring to mount the Aimpoint, it's super low and will co-witness with the irons.

Themadhatter is going to disown you now. He thinks it's sacrilege to put an Aimpoint on an AK. ;)

Looking good, Templar!
Tell us more about how you are going to mount the light, what kind, etc.
Looking good, Templar!

I bought this LaRue offset ring mount from Grant http://www.gandrtactical.com/cgi-bin/commerce.cgi?preadd=action&key=OFM-LT&reference=/cgi-bin/commerce.cgi%3Fsearch%3Daction%26keywords%3Dflashlightmount%26searchstart%3D0%26template%3DPDGCommTemplates/FullNav/SearchResult.html and I'm going to try to mount it in front of the Aimpoint, reversed, so that I can activate the Surefire 6P I have laying around. It should hold it at about 10 o'clock on the left side.
It might interfere with the irons, but if it does, I can remove it when using the rifle in the daytime, and quickly attach at night. Hopefully it will be here tomorrow.
Wow, that looks like a smart set-up.
I have the feeling the AK guys are going to surprise some people during the low light class.

Arsenal SLR-105 A1R. Sporting the PK-AS until Mark LaRue comes out with an AK mount that will co-witness with an Aimpoint. Waiting on a Gear Sector GS-2P to try on it.
The stamped 5.45 Bulgarian guns are by far my favorite configuration.

Century SAR-1. The 'donkey-dick' foregrip has since been replaced with a standard laminated handguard.

While I use to strive for authenticity (looking correct with respect to country of origin), I've recently totally lost interest in the 'collector' aspect of AKs. In fact, I've been seriously considering doing a Krylon multi-cam job on the SAR-1.
Have I lost my mind?

+1 to the above.
W/ that said...I may *wink wink* know where there is a krylon multicam how to.
Maybe I should just post the how to on this site....
My newest guns I've been trying to resist the urge to paint as I love black...but damn I paint everything and love art....so we'll see.
I keep telling myself I'm not gonna paint the one above. I may do a Polish Desert Pantera camo scheme but better than my MC job by using an actual airbrush this time.

We need details, man! Back when I was looking to procure an RPK-74 (a couple years ago) kits were expensive, and receivers weren't yet being made. You had to either modify the front trunion (I think), or cannibalize the receiver from a VEPR. Is this no longer the case?

Holding about 4inches from prone at the 100 with military sling and 123 grain FMJ. I thought the pistol grip and forend were a little slick for my taste so i degreased and coated them with truck bed liner for a better hold.

Threw a Krink brake on last night and shot a few mags off the back porch (I LOVE Montana). Makes the gun significantly more muzzle heavy which i like and really cut down on muzzle flash. I have to head to the range to see how much it affected my zero over the stock brake but so far me likey.

*ORF took 6 weeks on a 2 week promise build time. Multitude of reasons. They knocked $55 off each rifle in the end and gave 2 free mags. The two rifles have their rear sights finished differently- one is black with white lettering and one looks like bare, newly machined steel, unfinished completely. The gas tube latches are a little loose (not tight like my Polish.) I don't know about DamnYank's carrier because I didn't pay attention but my carrier looks like it was blasted clean and Birchwood Casey Perma-Blued with a thin streaky finish.
Oh well. Overall they look like the Russian rifle I've wanted for almost 2 years. The best part is they didn't engrave S and F on the receiver. I still have the option to send them out and have the Russian markings all put on.

Also, she's an ORF custom build due to the siderail that I had installed. I need an optic and suggestions...
Pretty sweet Suicide.
If it were ME, I'd swap out the Bulgarian wood handguards and black US grip for a set of US made plum handguards from K-Var. They look just like the Russian stuff, and it would be a great way to clone a late ('88-'89) Afghan War rifle or 1st Chechen War rifle.........
Really?
I thought wood was all the rage these days?!?
But if I swap those out then there'd be no need for the US parts because the Bakelite mags would look out of place, no?
ARGH...

The Russians never throw anything away. You'll see laminated wood stocked '74's in service in Chechnya right now, you'll see bakelite mags still in service in wooden, plum, and black stocked rifles....hell, you'll see AK-47's and AKM's in service right next to AK-74M's.

SAR-2 Robb?
Very nice!
Yes, it's 9x19s! I think I need to get a new top cover. The BlackJack safety bumps into it before going fully to safe.

Norinco 84S with some mods. This is the most accurate AK I've ever had, even better than my Valmet M76.

Where did you get those handguards? My friend wants polymer but doesn't like the deep ribs on most standard sets. He might be able to live with those...

KWB- is that russian wood on the AKS74? Where did the PG come from? Where are your US parts? I am asking not to be the hall monitor but because I'm buying Russian wood and would like a PG but don't know how to make up for the part...
ETA: That's a US brake, isn't it? Kinda looks blued to me...
The HG's are the late model Russian w/o the scalloped or vented upper...I originally had an earlier, darker set on it.
http://www.pbase.com/kwb377/image/89853960.jpg
The PG is a Russian bakelite and came with the darker HG set.
The brake is the original Bulgy that came with the kit and matches the rest of the rifle pretty well (crappy flourescent lighting).
922r parts are receiver, gas piston, FCG, and mag floorplate/follower.
