I just had a reminder today of the respect that our fighting men and women deserve. I flew into a small western city on a 30 passenger Sky West/Delta flight with a soldier coming home on leave. Nearly everyone on the plane talked to him the whole flight (I am pretty sure I was the only person on the plane not related to someone), updating him on what had changed at home, asking him about his tour, just a little bit of everything.

When we landed and passed through security there must have been 100 people including a complete Patriot Guard (or similar group) honor guard standing at attention holding flags for the soldier to walk through.

Even though I was a stranger several people offered to let me around the procession so I could get out of the airport. I told them I was just fine letting this soldier get the reception he deserved and that I could wait.

It was an interesting reminder of what is missing in so many large cities, a true sense of community.
