I put a S&W 15t on layaway a few weeks ago. It was the last one they had in stock and was being used as the display. My question is which 15t's are having problems shooting 5.56. Are the old 15t's with the cmt carriers the ones having problems. Should I go explain the situation and make sure the rifle has the LMT carrier. Do you think the store will understand and order the newer version with the LMT BCG's that are staked right if it is not already. I just don't want to have to send a $1500 gun back for repairs.

They want to much for that rifle. They are cheaper then that you just need to look around. You can even check gunbroker.com and I have seen them with the Troy rail and sight system for under $1300.00. Or Budsguns

Or just get the Colt LE6920 for $1210.

I have already put one on layaway for $1350 plus tax. It came out to be $1466. I just want to know if I need to ask him make sure it has a LMT BCG. I have heard their are alot of problems with some of the 15t's that have CMT BCG's like not firing 5.56 ammo.

I can't recall what the serial number was when the went to LMT carriers but the easiest was is to up it out of the upper and look.

It is pretty easy to figure out if the bolt is staked properly in the store - just pull it out and look. While you're in there, you can easily identify a LMT bolt. This info. was passed on to me on this very forum by C4IGrant when I was asking very similar questions:

"[I]t is EASY to spot a LMT BCG. There will be the letter "L" and the letters "MP" stamped on the bolt. The bolt extractor will also have a black insert and a Crane O-Ring installed. The carrier key will be staked normally (not a line across the top)."

To add to this, there can also be the letters R, S as well (maybe some others). You can also spot an LMT gas key as they use a kind of unusual looking bolt and be properly staked. The extractor will also have black insert and a Crane O-Ring in it.

Well my friend who lives by the gun shop went buy their today and said that it was staked correctly. Since it is staked correctly I am guessing I have a LMT BCG. Were all the older models staked like the picture in that other thread showed?

On 15Ts that I may come across in retail stores, is there any way for me to see this WITHOUT disassembling the rifle? If I can't see the staking in particular without disassembly, is there any other way for me to determine whether the rifle has an LMT BCG in it without disassembly? If so, would someone be kind enough to shoot me a picture or two of what I would be looking at/for through the ejection port or elsewhere to conclude the rifle has an LMT BCG? PM me at mprivratsky@lindquist.com if you don't want to post here.

Thanks very much in advance,

Mark

No. You have to take the BCG out to figure out which one it is. If the gun shop wants to sell the AR, they will push the button for you.

Thanks, Grant. As always, you come through again.

I've stumbled across a few locally as well as over the net in the last couple of days. Prices aren't as good as yours but close so I thought I should put more effort into tracking one down while you're out of stock. However, I can't get at least one of the internet shops to break the rifle down for me and check the BCG before I order it. That's turned me off of them. I haven't yet heard back from another place on whether they will check for me or not. And the three big box retailers here in town with this rifle in stock on their shelves aren't typically happy about breaking a gun down as they don't have staff people who know how to do it.

I spoke with S&W's customer service as well, trying to figure out any new details about exactly when the switch from CMT to LMT was made. All I learned was that the particular sales rep I was talking to believed all rifles shipping since January 2007 have been new builds that "should" contain the LMT BCG. As reported elsewhere on the net, she confirmed there's no serial number range that I can look at (or that they will disclose) to decipher the Stag-built vs. S&W-in-house-built.

Thanks,

Thanks,

Run, don't walk from any dealer that won't push the take down pin to look at the BCG.
