View Full Version : What optics available for Retro carry handle A1 type AR's?

Besides the Colt type, what other optics are good for the carry handle....preferably with the integral screw mount. I was thinking a 1.5x Compact Acog with the carry handle mount. Are there any 1x RDS types that are like the colt 3x?

I put a Trijicon Compact ACOG TA-44R on my dad's Colt 6520, and it works pretty decently.

Not ideal, no, but if you're locked into a carry handle and you don't want to go with a gooseneck mount that puts an Aimpoint over the handguard, it's probably the best, although most expensive, option.

The other thing to do is get an ARMS #2 mount and throw an Aimpoint on there. ARMS M16A1/A2 mount (http://www.armsmounts.com/default.asp?mode=products&sub=mounts&id=[hsh]02)

Either one is going to be better than the old school Colt scopes.

I've got the ARMS mount on one of my ARs and it works great. They've got them at SWFA.com for around $70.00.

+3 on the compact ACOG

they're expensive but built like a tank and fit great on a carry handle....as low as possible with a good eye relief

If your gonna go retro, go all the way.

The original RDS, Armson OEG.

I swam, jumped, flogged, the crap out of one in the early 90's (pre aimpoint), & made a bunch of iron sight dinosaurs look silly on movers & night shoots.

As Dano mentioned, if you want truly old school, the Armson is it.

Still available apparently.....

Look around for a Single Point like those used by the Son Tay Raiders on their GAUs.

wow, I didn't know the singlepoints are still around. I'm liking the modern version of the OEG, maybe that would be a good one for the XM clone and maybe a TA44 for the A1 clone.

Here are my retros that need some optics:

No longer made, but they pop up on GunBroker and often for under $100. :)

Its the orginal mounts that are a B---H to find!

wow. Blast from the past. I had a buddy who had one of these in the Gulf. I forgot all about it. Worked pretty slick too.

You might also consider a carry handle rail mount and an old Aimpoint MkIII, 1000, 2000 (http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=190424026), or 3000.

You need to keep both eyes open. If I remember right you can not see through the scope all you will see is the dot and the dot will be superimposed on whatever your looking at with the other eye. Works well but you loose what you’d see with the second eye if you had an Aimpoint or Eotech.

Was the Armson OEG pretty much restricted to being a close range optic? I kind of want one for my A1 rifle, but I wasn't sure if it was a good fit, say versus a magnified scope.

I have a OEG (now with depleated tritium (sp?)) still one of my favorites. Contacted Armson last year and they are looking into re-loading them.

For real old school the Armson OEG is the quintessential CAR type optic.

During the late 80's, in a little, barely spoken of 'action' in Latin America, the Trijicon RX06-10 was quite popular. The carrying handle ACOG's started to show up in the field around the early 90's.

There is also the older Mepro 21 that the IDF put on everything, including their M16A1 carbines in a see through carry handle mount...

One of my AFEMs is for one of those "actions." :secret:

Getting back on topic. I recall some folks using carrying handle optics in those ops, but I can't remember what type - - - or who "they" were. Then again this was during the era when we didn't know what a "tac-cool operator" has. Alot of guys were still running with gear that worked for them in the RVN and didn't trust anything but iron sights.

For a better ACOG fit (assuming a carry handle and fixed stock), I'd suggest a TA-45. Longer eye relief than with a TA-44.

The reticle is just a fine cross hair vs. the much more aggressive illuminated reticles of a Trijicon ACOG or a red dot. Low light use absolutely sucks.

Also, the scopes are not nearly as bomb proof as either of the two modern optics, especially compared to an ACOG. But like I said....30 or 40 years ago, it was high speed low drag.

Yes, I had a 3x Colt scope a long time ago and the crosshairs broke. You could see it was just like string hanging down from the left side where it broke off.
