this gun seems to really like to coat itself in powder residue. I'm currently using unique powder, which i generally like (it's very efficient, 5.5 grains per round means a pound goes a long way). also unique is very low flash in 9mm.

what should i try in the way of clean burning pistol powders?

Naturally, Vihtavuori lists several choices of powder for the 9mm Luger in their reloading manuals. My personal preference is 3N37.

I'll second Vihtavuori. N320 would be another good choice if you want a very clean burning powder and don't mind a slightly lower velocity limit. VV N320 is an expensive powder, but you make up for it with smaller charges.

Unique isn't known for being a clean powder.

supposedly unique has been reformulated in the last decade or so to burn cleaner. I've never used the original stuff. I will say that unique loads are much cleaner than wolf or silver bear, and a little cleaner than winchester white box, at least in my experience.
