Hey guys,

I took my Powder Springs MAC in 45 out to the range today. I only rarely shoot it (ammo) but it is invariably reliable.

I have never done much research into the gun. Other than the Lage upper, are there any worthwhile upgrades? The stock sucks monkey parts.

I shot a .45 MAC some years ago, and was not impressed. It was, to quote Ken Hackathorn, a "phonebooth gun". Then about two years ago, I shot another one with one of the Gemtech suppressors. The additional weight and forward grasping point made all the difference. It was still no MP5, but it was far more controllable than my previous experience.

I haven't tried any of the Lage uppers, so I can't comment there.

I agree. A suppressor is next on my list.

I have a PS M10/.45 and have ran about 100 rounds through it for the same reason as stated by the OP....ammo. Finding .45 in eastern NC is like trying to drive a roofing nail into gnats ass...just can't be done.

Anyways, for the suppressor issue. I have a Gemtech Viper suppressor that has been recently APPROVED by the ATF. As soon as I get it in my grubby hands I'll provide a range report.

A MAC with a lage upper and difference stock is better than an UZI in my opinion

It is thinner, has better ergos, better sights, and is a better platform for mouting optics and lights.

I'd love to hear a suppressed 9x19mm variant against a Sterling L3KA4 - 9x19mm. (I think that's the designation for the integrally suppressed variant.)

I shot a full auto rebuild Sterling for the first time today.

After the KACs are done. I am definitely buying a semi auto clone.

A MAC10 is not thinner than an Uzi. You are thinking of an M11/9.

No comparison. The MAC10 (in 9mm or .45) has a noisier action. I've shot the integrally suppressed Sterling Mk V (aka: L34A1, I believe). It's incredibly quiet.

You have a few options here. You can buy ammo online. Or you can get into reloading. Both cost more up front (assuming you buy in bulk online), but ultimately will give you more ammo at lower cost.

I've heard a Viper-45 and was very impressed. Good choice.

Now, the other option you have with a MAC10/45 is to convert it to 9mm. This is actually not all that difficult, and you can swap back to .45 whenever you want.

You need a 9mm upper, bolt, and a magwell adapter. You will likely need a different mag catch too. Here is a set from Cobray.com (https://www.onlinesecureordering.com/794.html) that has most everything you need.

I did a similar setup, but pieced mine together instead of ordering a "kit" like this one. Same end result, though. You want to be aware that in the 9mm, there is a double-feed bolt and a single-feed bolt. Either will work, but you have to match the type of magazine you want to use to the bolt.

The double-feed bolt uses the original Walther-style (expensive) 9mm mags. The single-feed was designed for the zytle M11/9 mags. You can also use the metal mags from Recon Ord with this type of bolt.

Caliber issues aside, I'll agree that in stock form, the MAC10 is not the easiest gun to shoot. As noted, a silencer or just a plain barrel extension makes a big difference. The added weight up front helps. Having somewhere to actually hold with your off-hand makes a big difference.

Oh yeah - with a silencer, you need some kind of can cover so you can hold it without burning your hand. The Viper has one built in already. On mine, I would use a lace-up leather and nomex cover, but which has been out of production for a while. You can find new covers at http://www.subguns.org/products/covers/. I haven't tried these, but they look like they should work well.

Once you get a silencer / barrel extension, look at the stock. The wire stock tends to slide up off the shoulder when shooting. I looked around for several months trying to find an original wood stock for my MAC10. I finally gave up and built my own, based on pictures from an old RPB catalog. I like the way it turned out, and it made a world of difference in how the gun handled.

Very nice and informative thread. I'm considering purchasing an M-10, powder springs from my class III dealer. He's supposed to have it in stock any day now and then I can hurry up to wait some more, lol. I'm looking at this gun because it's at a good price, $3K and I want to own an SMG. Anyone who's purchased this gun have any regrets?
