My pal has a side business where he buys and sells things and he also bids on estates. This came from a box in the attic of an estate that he purchased the contents of, and together we surmised that maybe it was built as a show piece that sets in a glass case and maybe gets used during some form of celebration/parade or the like.

It is heavy, and it is chrome plated. There is a pull string that pivots a heavy hammer into a fire pin. It appears chambered for 12g shotgun shells, we test fired it with one and it worked. The barrel is very heavy walled, non rifled. About 24" long, the wood seems to be just a random base that someone made and stained to fasten the thing down onto.

He is trying to get an idea of what it really is or was, and if it is worth anything or just a toy that someone made. If it is a toy/hobby object, the quality is very top notch!

If you have any ideas, please share!

I found a list of antique cannon types:
Salute Cannons
Signal Cannons
Yacht Cannons
Lyle Cannons
Bronze And Brass Barrels

And I found a company that fits the description of that tag on the base:
http://www.navalcompany.com/

But that company only shows one model, and it looks like a rifle style device.

Maybe a flare gun for a ship.

maybe for throwing lines to ship/shore? I'd guess a salute canon, but some of the salties on here would know better. Today in traffic I would have liked that as a hood ornament:p

That's what I was thinking, either that or is a model.

Edit: Google says it's a lyle gun made around the 1920's.

OK, I called the company in Doylestown PA and talked to them a bit. He said they do not record the serial numbers, or if they did, they no longer have them.

They are not a firearm.

It was a Salute/Signal Cannon, often purchased to be used to mark the start of an event such as a race or celebration. It produces an extremely loud and smokey report with the 10g blanks.

Chambered for 10 guage blanks that are still available.

The last manufacturer date was 2002, but it was made for many years prior to that end date. The sale price at 2002 was $1495 for the Chrome version.

The barrel is a 13" heavy brass with chrome plating.

So, how the heck do we sale this thing!?

ebay?

================================

Heck, the anti-gun liberals jerks at eBay would cough up blood and shut you down in second if you try to sell anything that even remotely makes gun noises.

I'd try GunBroker.com or AuctionArms.com. The problem is coming up with a good description so people can find it....

OR

I'll give you $75  . I'd mount it just inside my front door, so it would be the first thing a person would see. Might stop these door-to-door salesman.

You shouldn't have a problem getting rid of it.

I found a cannon collector on google and sent him links to those pictures and he emailed back offering $450 plus shipping for it a few minutes later. My FIL payed $200 for it, so it is SOLD. Unless he does not come through with payment we will not need to list it.

Interestingly enough, I found the exact cannon on a website for sale at a Naples Florida place for $2000!
