Don't come here much anymore but I know there are some hardcore Glockophiles here, so I hope you like this.
OK, where to start. I guess some upfront admissions:
-I've known Larry, the owner of CCFA, for years. He provided me with the carbon fiber can for my HK Mk23 among other things. I got a call from him last week and now my gunsmiths will be the CT dealers for these frames. I got a very nice discount on this one.
-I'm not a Glock fan by any means. I keep buying them and then I ask myself why. My biggest hang up is no external safety. Always has, always will be. BUT, I will admit (and even the most ardent <insert your pistol here> fan will admit), Glocks flat out WORK. I just prefer 1911s or various HKs. But please remember that just because I (or anyone) likes something that DOES NOT automatically infer that what you (or anyone else) likes suck. Just a different road to the same destination.
I and several other shooters tried this out this afternoon in an indoor range. This is NOT an expert, scientific or whatever else review. Just some guys shooting, some of whom carry Glocks on duty, which I do think carries some weight. We used some very snappy 115gr +P+ HPs for testing. Half a case (500 rds) even. (I really wanted to go drinking, so I had to cut it short. Sorry, long day)
The pics show some of the features:
-5 times the rail surface
-beveled mag well
-extended beavertail
-frontstrap checkering instead of fingergrooves
-backstrap inserts. Mine has the optional 1911 insert
-rounded triggerguard
-full size Glocks only in 9mm, .40 and .357sig. Mid frames to follow. NO plans for compacts, .45s or 10mms.
You basically gut your G17 and swap the internals except for some unique to the CCF frame pins and a spring. Takes no time for someone Glock familiar. The locking block in unique to the CCF. If you have an aftermarket Glock barrel (Briley, etc), you will need to modify the block. This frame is made to work with stock Glock barrels.
You also get a Buffer Tech buffer (shown installed)
I have the SS frame. Aluminum is also available and titanium is planned. If you want to carry this thing, I highly recommend the aluminum for reasons you will see soon.
The pistol, even with these hot loads, had just about ZERO muzzle flip. I know this isn't a 454 Casull to begin with but this thing just SITS out there. Doesn't move. Why? Because it weighs a TON. Oh my God. A stock G17 is about 22 oz empty. This is about FORTY SIX oz. empty. Add another 10oz for a full mag. WOW. But weight on the Glock, unlike on me, has some advantages.
Combine the weight with a trigger that is the finest Glock trigger I have ever used and you get one tackdriver Glock. We had a couple of stock G17s on hand. Now even the most devoted Glock owner would admit that Glocks are not SIG P210s in the accuracy department. That they go bang everytime (which is the most important thing anyway) with acceptable accuracy is good enough for most owners. The CCF cut everyone's groups in half if not more. And not even breathing hard. And, at least for 500rds in a clean environment, it never hung up once. I ASSume the trigger feel and pull has something to do with the complete lack of plastic on plastic flex with the SS frame. Whatever it is, the trigger has changed significantly for the better overnight.
I know the Glock is fine as is for the overwhelming majority of the users out there. I would not call the CCF frame an upgrade. I would call it an option. I think the SS is too heavy for carry but SS outsells aluminum nearly 10 to 1. MANY agencies are interested in these frames. Again, Glocks are just about indestructible as is and the long term jury is still out on these frames but I really believe the trigger pull and accuracy are for real and a significant improvement. I'm not going to carry this but instead use it as a shooter at the range. I'll get an aluminum one some day and maybe that will change my mind. Until then, I think these frames are the heat. As always, your mileage may vary.
PROS:
-much better accuracy
-much better trigger pull
-some improved frame features, epecially (for me) the extended beavertail
-relatively inexpensive for what you get ($299 for SS, $279 for alum until 7/30, then $349 for both)
-1913 spec light rail
-1911 grip angle-a GREAT improvement
-you can now pistolwhip someone to your hearts content....I mean really **** someone up
CONS:
-a LOT of extra weight
-takedown proceedure slightly different (you must hold the takedown lever down until the slide in completely off AND to put it back on)
-if you want an aftemarket barrel, it is not a drop in anymore
-you are messing with a very proven commodity
Since I'm not going to carry this thing, I'm going to constantly mess with it. The Heinie night sights will be here Monday. I may change the barrel to an extended Briley and get a can. And I have to decide what finish to apply to the frame although it looks quite sporty in silver and black. The official 9mm of the Oakland Raiders. Enjoy.
