It's makes about as much sense to me as chambering an AR in 5.7x28mm

How so? The 6.8mm SPC is MORE effective than the .223 and 7.62X39 that the Mini's are originally chambered for.

If box-stock Mini-14s aren't accurate with 5.56, how shitty will they be with 6.8? :o

If shooting 6.8 I couldn't see why you wouldn't get an AR. Maybe it's just me.

I'd be curious to see if any components were beefed up to handle addtional forces of the 6.8. The Mini isn't a hallmark of durability. I suspect that a variant with a more substantial cartridge yet won't fare even as well.

For some people in some states, like California, it may be better choice.

Very true, I hadn't considered that.

Apparently the newly redesigned Mini's are much, much better in the accuracy dept. than the originals were, but I haven't tried one out myself so I won't argue it too strongly...;)

I think it makes a certain amount of marketing sense. For someone who wants a short to medium deer rifle that doesn't look like an AR and is capable of taking medium game, I think the 6.8mm is probably a better choice than the 7.62x39mm.

Ruger has sold thousands and thousands of Mini-14's and they have a strong fan base. Lots of them used for pest control of varmints and nuisance deer, and really expensive plinking. The 6.8 seems like a relatively easy fit for the existing Mini-14 platform.

Ruger can now sell the existing fan base their newer more accurate rifle with a harder hitting caliber. Still lots of people who dislike black rifles and for an AR unfriendly state like CA, you might sell a few too.

I'm very happy to see it come out. Hopefully we'll see more bullet choices for 6.8 reloading, and factory ammo more available in retail stores if the caliber gets more popular. Can only help us AR 6.8 shooters.

There are still times, depending on what you do and why you want one, that a Mini 14 suits the bill better than the AR. The gun is shorter (top of receiver to bottom) and with a 5 round mag still rides better in a saddle scabbard. They were labeled "Ranch" models for a reason and worked very well in this role. 6.8 would only make them better.

Did Ruger ever start making NORMAL (high) cap mags for the mini again?

We can get factory 20s that are marked LE/Gov't use etc but they're pretty pricey, I think we sell them for about $45

They never stopped making the 20s. They've been limited to LE/gov sales though. The 30s were discontinued a few years ago, and last I knew, haven't returned.

Mass-surplusing of Minis from LE service have helped the availability of OEM 20rd mags, as has sunset of the AWB. Mining the usual LE distributors and wholesalers that do mass trades and buyouts might net some for a reasonable cost.

Ruger? No thanks. He came up with the 10 round limit in the first place.
