I am looking to pick up a new sidearm and have been presented 3 options so far and would like some opinions. I have no experience with them so I thought I'd ask what I should look for or stay away from. I was holding out for a SIG P228 but I have been offered the following:

W. German P220, 400 round count or a
P226 in .40 or a
HK USP in .40 which looks almost new.

I will be looking at them Monday so I thought I'd get opinions here first.

Thanks

imo,

Owned them all.

Good choices all of them.

Your anatomical/ergonomic tactile feedback well tell you what works best for you.

They all have their own reset indices regarding triggers, albeit similar.

Your ergonomic & anatomical attributes well most likely tell you which one you shoot best etc.

I've never shot the HK, but I have several Sigs including those and know they are excellent. As above, it's all going to be about how they feel to you. They're all excellent pistols.

I was holding out for a SIG P228 but I have been offered the following:

I notice the choices you were offered were either .40 or .45 but you originally wanted a 9mm. Why limit yourself to those choices, if you want a P228 why not get a P228?

With ammo prices the way they are, you might end up spending significantly more for .40 or .45 practice ammo than 9mm. Not sure if that was a consideration when you were originally looking for a 9mm - but something to consider before purchasing another caliber.

Well, I can tell you about the HK USP .40 fullsize and the cost of ammo.

I just bought a case of 1,000rds of .45ACP Federal Ball for $379.00 and a case of .40S&W Federal Ball for $279.00; both significantly more than I pay for 9mm.

As for the USP, nice design but showing its age compared to more recent HK designs. The SIGs? You sure that is what you want?

Why are you limiting your options to these three when none of them are what you were looking for in the first place?

Out of the choices presented, I would consider the USP.

However if you are looking for .40, I would also look strongly at a:

-HK P30 .40

-SW M&P40

I think you need to figure out a few more factors before you decide such as what caliber you want, what trigger system you want (i.e. DA/SA, striker fired, DAO, SAO, etc.)...then narrow your choices from there.

I was holding out for a SIG P228 but I have been offered the following

Some W. German P226s:

There's a lot more sites out there to find P228s. If that is your first choice, go find it.

If you have to choose between the three that you listed, I'd go with the USP .40. I've used both the P220 and P226 .40 on duty and I prefer either the P226 9mm, any caliber in P229, or the P228.
