Ok a while back I figured I needed to stop being lazy and actually order a cleaning rod to properly clean my rifle instead of just running a bore snake down the barrel. So I purchased this Tipton rod for .22 - .26 caliber

For the life of me I can't get the thing to go down the barrel with a patch. Am I just being a big girl (no offense to any ladies that post here ;)) or should I really have bought the .17 - .20 caliber rod

I don't know/think it matters but I'm using this along with a JP bore guide. Thanks

Cleaning rod looks to be correct size. (.208" dia)

Sure that you have the right size patches?

Not really. I usually just buy/use some universal (or so I thought) ones. I'll have to double check that. I guess I didn't really think that the thickness of the patch would make that much a difference--using a jag, not a slotted tip if that matters

ETA: From the sticky'd cleaning thread

4. Q Tips, pipe cleaners, .38/9mm cleaning patches, 1" paint brush and cleaning rags/clothes

I use the same patches I clean my 9mm's with but I guess that still doesn't guarantee I'm using the right size

.22 patches are a lot smaller. That is probably the problem.

The patch size DEFINITELY matters. A .22cal patch should be about a 1.5" square. If you're trying to force patches for a 9mm down your AR's barrel I'm not surprised you are having trouble.

Chalk that one up in stupid human category. Thanks guys. Guess that gives me a good excuse to put an order into Midway for some stuff:D

i learned this one the hard way... i'd had an old rod that would allow pretty much any size patch down. then i bought a new, good coated rod, and didn't realize the difference.. stuck a jag on there, spiked a big ol patch, and rammed it into the barrel. when it hung up, naturally i just figured it needed more manliness- so i jammed it down farther. came to a complete stop and would not budge to nor fro...

now picture big bkb thrashing around his garage fighting this thing out... knocking over crap on shelves, breaking his cabinets from trying to hook the handle on 'em and pulling it out, shit getting kicked... a general eruption of destruction and chaos.

when i was done, and the rod was finally out, it literally looked like a hurricane had swept through, bottles of liquid were busted open, there were splintered pieces of oak all over, and a big blown out wound on the front of my cabinets.. my cleaning rod was in the shape of a Z and the handle half broken off...

for the love of all that is holy- use the proper sized patch.

With the patch jag I use, I found that the 1-1/8th square cotton flannel patches manufactured by Montana X-treme provide the necessary bore fit to properly clean the bore.

Looks like Midway carries the Montana X-treme jags, brushes and rods but don't seem to have their patches. Brownell's looks to have their solvents but that's about it. Can you tell me where these patches might be purchased?

12 ga patches work for everything and are the most economical. Buy in bulk and just cut to size as needed.

I locally purchase my patches at Sportsman's Warehouse.

You might try ordering directly from Montana X-treme.

EDIT I: I guess you can't order direct from them. But, they do have a drop down menu of dealers.

Just cut down your 9mm patches if you want. I start with one cut a little smaller on the first dirtiest runs, then you can get a larger one through once partially clean.

I have some Tipton rods which are graphite. I also have a couple of steel rods. The graphite rods are not nearly as stiff as the steel and bow alarmingly with force that would not bow steel. I have to use looser fitting patch with the graphite rods, I think I'm going to get rid of them.
