Wormy,
That ALG trigger of yours. Have you noticed it getting any better with time? There have been comments made that b/c of the hardness of the finish the trigger doesn't get better with wear and tear. I am just the opposite. Mine has lost some creep but the pull has definitely lightened.

Mine are Geissele Super 3 Gun triggers. I have one in my 3 gun ar with about 3,000 rounds on the trigger, and this lower has about 1,000 rounds on the S3G. I can't tell a difference between the two as far as one having more rounds than the other. I don't know anything about the ALG triggers but the Geissele finish has held up well in the contact areas. Sorry this didn't exactly answer anything to your question but its the best I got. Lol.

Have you ever seen my range bag in my pics? I sprayed it all over with different stencils just to help break up the shape....kind of a camo so its not just Coyote brown....it worked pretty good.
I actually almost lost it when I left it on the ground at a different range, in the high grass. blends right in with my AO

Stickman - I have a question for you. Tried private message but your inbox is full. Saw an old pic on arfcom you posted of a rifle with the vltor casv rail system and a trijicon accupoint 1x4. Just wondering what mount you used since the vltor rail adds height to the optic.

Let us know how they work. I know pro mag generally isnt considered exceptional quality but the new design looks very p-magish so maybe they're going in the right direction.

I really do love when all the trigger time and drills work out for the best. Had it not been for drill after drill throwing up onto target I would have probably hesistated and missed this guy. I love that my rifles get used for more then just ranges.

What length is the c4?
Finally got out to the range and put all 420 rounds of M855 that I had recently bought through my Colt. Time to order another can of it. :D
Thank you to the Army Ranger that was at the range! I was having a hard time getting my EXPS sighted in at 100 yards. He was shooting next to me and I asked him for help. He had it dead on after only 10 rounds. He was fresh back in the states after getting back from Afghanistan.
After the help getting it sighted in I fired at 100 yards to show the Range SO that I was on the paper. He let me go to the next firing line where you are allowed to go through the rapid fire course. I went through five mags in very short work and the Colt didn't have a single hiccup.
Its funny that in the 10 years I was a Fed LEO I was never allowed to practice rapid fire or transitions to a sidearm. I had to go to a range as a civilian to practice. geesh.
The weight of the M952 on the front was very evident so I think I'll start to look for a mini scout.

I literally got lucky on the shot, I was doped for 250 and nearly walked onto this guy at 25 yards. Had to shoot twice as both rounds where extremely high. Thats what I get for hoping to see something far out, nope, I pretty much walk into him.

The M4 used to be all I shot. It rarely sees range time even though I take it for my back-up in case the Shorty goes down.
Its the carbine I did a write up on a few months back,
Evolution of an M4
It started out as this
http://i1087.photobucket.com/albums/j468/Danger131/DSCF1794-3.jpg
Then got a Tactical Facelift

http://i1087.photobucket.com/albums/j468/Danger131/M4IV.jpg
But I hated the look and didnt really like the rail. It was super accurate, but just wasnt for that gun......So I did this
This is the current config. I just put the VFG and hand stop in the 9 o cLock position.

Offset PA Micro actually. I would have used it as it setup for under 100. First shot was in under two seconds from seeing this buck, second was taken shortly after. Adrenaline was pretty high so in all honestyI more or less forget the RD was there.
Just goes to show that in high stress situations we do not rise to the occasion but fall to the level of our training. In my case my training with primary glass proved successful, secondary optic needs work. Always room for improvement, thanks for pointing that out ASH
I love it man! I'll have to find that thread and read through it.

I had two of them sent to me a while back from UCWRG. They said they were going to produce more along with other AR stuff, but I haven't heard jack from them since I got the two lowers on T&E. They are good lowers, better than most of the lowers floating around. They have a tension screw for the upper in case you are worried about upper play/slop and they have a captive take down spring in the back. They were also cut with an engraving laser instead of a bit so the points on the umbrella are sharp and all the engravings are uniform. The anodizing held up to a screw driver really well too.

After being away from the AR platform for about 3 years, I thought it was time to get back in. This time I intend to keep the set-up with HD in mind.
This is only the third ARI5 I've ever owned. I recently purchased it from a good friend. He was cleaning out his closet and decided to sell most of his armament. I took it off his hands for a $375. At the time of purchase it was a bare bones M4rgery. As you can tell I've ordered and installed a few aftermarket accessories. I've got a Leatherwood CMR on the way, along with a SR07 switch for the light.
Future Mods I'm considered include a Mid-length FF quad rail system (YHM) and a good Trigger assembly.
I really like the UTG takedown case. Not a bad case at all, specially for only $29.

We took it out to the Range this past weekend and had a great time. We were able to bore sight the irons to hit paper at 100 yards pretty quick. Once on paper, the sights were adjusted as best we could and we were able to shoot about 2-3 MOA. Not too bad, I guess.
The conditions for punching paper were near perfect. We were also taking our time with each shot. As you know, it helps tremendously when you have good ammo to boot. Horny 55 gr.TAP is the Cat's Meow..!
My vision has really taken a dump these last few years and i was having a little trouble focusing on the targer while pulling focus on the sights. Heck, I was just happy to know that I was hittng paper at 100 yards. :)
At that point we decided to see what we could do with the rifle at a closer distance so we packed everything up and walked over to the 25 yard range. My oldest son shot multiple 0.25" groupings (1 MOA) and my youngest son an I were constantly shooting 0.50" groupings.
Before leaving we rapid fired the rifle to test reliability and it perfomed flawlessly. Absolutely no issues to report. All in all a great day at the Range.
I'm really looking forward to receiving the CMR. I'm hoping my groups will shrink a little more. :)

If HD is the primary role, why the CMR vs something like an aimpoint?
And if low cost was the goal why the quad vs a straight plastic hand-guard?
You remind me of Brann Dailor from Mastodon, BCMJunkie.
Lol you know youre the second person to tell me that hahaha!

Good questions.
The Variable CMR optic (1-4x24) adds versatility and it's relatively inexpensive. The quad rail gives me multiple positions and options for light and hand grip accessory placement. It's also an inexpensive modification.
I stated that the rifle was being built with HD in mind, as opposed to owning a rifle built or purchased specifically for long range paper punching.
Been there, done that.

Why would you want a "low-budget" home defense gun? Plinking? Sure, why not. It'd be a fun project, but for a bump-in-the-night rig, you'd be better served with quality components.
How many rounds did you put through it to determine reliability?
DPMS? UTG? YHM?
UTG in the current set-up. Solid rail, for sure.
I'll eventually install a YHM Diamond Specter. It looks like a very decent rail and the install is fairly easy. Also easy on the wallet.
I am definitely interested in the Umbrella Corp.grip. The angle is similar to the Gunfighter (which I like) and it appears to be wider. Which is my biggest complaint about the Gunfighter and it being too narrow. It also has a much thicker upper backstrap area. Will have to try this out and see if I like it. Price point appears to be good. Around the same as a MOE grip.
Here's a picture from Stick that is featured in this Military Times article:

The rifle was previously owned by a good friend. He was the original owner and had only run a few hundred rounds down the pipe. We ran about 150 more this past weekend. No issues at all. It ran flawlessly with 4 different types of ammo.
Why not Low-Budget AR for HD?? In your opinion is there a monetary amount that has to vested into a HD AR that automatically equates to superior quality and long term reliabilty??
Amended to include:
I completely understand the your question and it's intent. There are areas in a build that I will not compromise. Optic mount(s) is one. I'll either go with Larue or ADM fo the CMR mount.

First of all, this entire first post belongs in the AR Picture Thread.

No, there is a certain monetary amount to buy certain brands of ARs and their accessories that are proven in their quality and reliability. About $1000 for a Colt, Daniel Defense, BCM, or LMT rifle, about $400 for a red-dot optic and mount, and about $100-200 for a decent basic light and mount. If you include a rail, expect to spend at least another $100 or so.
Shoot the piss out of it. Safely. Good luck...
Where have you been brother?! That grip on Stick's SBR is Umbrella's too. They've got a facebook page with some updates and more of Stick's photos
I don't keep up on social media. I got the lowers and have been visiting their webpage, WWW.ucwrg.com, every week since getting the lowers. I talked to the owner about the grips and other things they are going to be putting out which also includes some new type of barrel. No details. From what I can remember, the grips are contracted to magpul to make and looked pretty sweet, but I have been in a long lasting affair with my MIAD grips. Can't ditch them for the latest and greatest unfortunately.

I suggest you take some additional time to read the stickies and mission statement. If you think parts are parts, you are sadly mistaken.

I make my own stencils for everything.
I just draw them out on paper, and then cut them out.
What did you use for the stencils?
You can google number stencils and print them out if you dont feel like making your own. I think BCMJ is a tattoo artist so he is probably not afraid to draw up his own stuff and it not look bad.

Much more rain this summer resulted a much better cotton crop this year than last. That cotton had been defoliated about 2 weeks ago leading to some new leaf growth at the bottom, and I loved the way the green contrasted with the white and the "deadness".

Looks like the GG&G mount to me:

does any one have any experience with the gg&g mount? i have been looking into one but its lack of popularity leads me to believe it doesn't do the best job when compared to other popular choices. between the QD, cantilever, and built in caps you would think you would see more of them around.

Wormy, I used a Troy Ambi CH during the recent RB1 carbine course. I was utilizing a 'pinch grip', which I liked. Thoughts between that and techniques using this raptor?

Why not? Nothing wrong with practicing irons.

It looks like a 14.5" barrel and that is the BC 1.5" or whatever to get it to 16.1" BBL. I have a gun very similar to that except I have beat to shit plastic handguards instead of a quad rail. Nothing wrong with that setup if it suits your fancy. I use it as a beater/loaner/backup/whatever gun now though.
Different strokes I guess. Nothing wrong with irons, but I'd make the argument that a red dot and an A2 FH will probably go faster than a Battlecomp and irons; especially if you plan to get a dot anyway.
On a separate note, I have some of those same dummy rounds and was running reload/malf drills with them last night:cool:

I have started to drift away from having every gun I have setup with dots since this stuff can get expensive quick. If WA ever gets SBR's, my dream gun 12.5" will have a dot, but my beather loaner gun will just have irons. Different strokes like you said.

Thx!
The lower is a post-ban Bushmaster made in the late 90's when Bushmaster was still Bushmaster. The upper it came with though was a 16" A2 with that stupid AK-74 brake to it. Gave me a concussion when I was 16 when I fired it for the first time. Truly it is my late father's rifle.
Since I have it now, I put the "20 BCM on top...and I AM LOVING IT! It is quickly become an instant favorite, almost beating my Noveske/LMT hybrid to its left; but it lacks the rail space for a light, and I like the carbine for CQ defense in the house.
I got the "20 to really get back to high power matches and to save the wear and tear on my M1.

I think it's good training to start with just your iron sights and then evolve to a red dot. It's amazing how many people will spend hundreds on a red dot when they can't even shoot 50yrds with their irons.

I agree ~ us poor folks shoot irons till we can afford a red dot. I recently saved up and acquired a Leupold 1.25 X 4 fire dot. I love it but if I have to go back to irons no problemo!

Let me clarify, I'm not opposed to shooting irons. I ran a Vickers class with irons because I couldn't afford an optic yet and wanted the training (priorities?) But the guy I asked the question of has a $150 comp on the end of his iron-sighted gun. Money must not be THAT big of an issue for him.
I have just Irons and a BattleComp on the end of my 11.5...... I have the BC 1.0 because BattleComp is one of my sponsors for 3gun and seeing as I had a BC 1.0 already on 3gun rifle the one I got for sponsorship went on my 11.5

Yeah, I've thought about finally matching the colors on my well worn and much loved 5.45 S&W AR but I feel gay every time I get serious about it.
Here she is. 24k rds and running great!
http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h251/baxshep/IMG_20121014_145300.jpg
I was the same way for quite a while. I am going to paint my rifle for no practical reason at all. Just doing something to make something look cool and not to make me shoot better isnt on the top of my list of things to do. My tacticoolness side won out this time though and I'm happy with it. Plus its just starting to get that extra cool worn look now. Which I like.
Every time your 5.45 build is mentioned I want to get one. After I do my Kino build next year that's probably gonna be my next build. Very impressive on that round count. Did you start off with completely stock internals? And what have you had to replace during the 24k rounds. Besides obvious things such as springs. Thanks,
-Jax

jaxman, I'm working on an definitive article but the short answer is the barrel burned out around 11k rounds and the LPK started going full auto at around 15k rds. S&W replaced both on their dime, paid shipping both ways, no questions asked. Also, did the O-ring upgrade and switched to a heavy buffer early on.

Looking forward to the article bud.
Smith's customer service (as mentioned countless times before) is exemplary. I've experienced it twice myself with an M&P and a J frame. No questions asked, fixed quick, and S&H covered both ways.

I love that Colt and Walmart are now in the same sentence!
I love the fact Colt is at WalMart as well and open to more exposure.
I did have something odd happen while talking to a Walmart employee at the gun counter. They had a Smith MP 15-22 with an non-threaded barrel. I asked him how much a threaded version would cost and the guy said they can't purchase the threaded version. I just pointed at the 6920 in the guncase and rolled my eyes. Soooo I can purchase the real thing with the threaded barrel but not the .22 version? Odd

Do you notice the elastic bands over the handguard ventilation slots retaining gas system heat?

To be honest with you, i dont know yet. I JUST put them on, but since they have been in use for years with the IDF, im sure that its a fair tradeoff. While im sure that they retain heat, they also act as a heat guard for your hands. Most importantly, they hold my pressure switches in place more adequately.
Since my rifles are for general use and not automatic fire/support, im not worried about the slightly decreased cooling ability.
