I was teasing him in another thread asking if he got it for Easter or something. I've always wanted a chocolate AR. He did a good job though.
Nice rifle! All of the keymod pics I've seen recently are tempting me something awful, I think my next build will go that route.
As far as 2MOA vs. 4MOA, I was a little concerned I might not like the little 2MOA dot of the PRO I ordered after being used to the big ring of my EOTech, but the 2MOA actually works well for me. I was afraid it would be too small for fast acquisition, but I had no problem with it right from the start. It works well for shooting out to 200 yds, too. I think the 4MOA would be too big for that.
I can ring 8" steel all day long at 200 yds with my 4 MOA T1.

Now comes the hard part... Trying to decide between a 2MOA and 4MOA T1. :sarcastic:
who makes those rail covers?

You may already know this, but at 200m that dot would be about the size of the circumference of an average human head.
who makes those rail covers?
Noveske. Along with the rail.

I probably should have qualified (and considered) that comment in relation to my vision. Going by my level of precision with the 2MOA of the PRO vs. the 1MOA center of the EOTech at that distance, the 4MOA would be too big for me. My vision is a little lacking at distance, with a mild astigmatism in one eye, but not enough to be required to wear glasses for driving.

This is correct.
You can get hits no problem at 200-300....as far as precision though, like a headshot....is difficult.
The EoTech is alot easier for precision. That 1moa dot is awesome, especially if you turn down the brightness

So I just picked up my first rifle.
Daniel Defense M4 V5 with the heavy barrel.
Got an extra 5 pmags and an Aimpoint pro...

I've been reading that daniel defense is a great design. Was gonna hold out for a KAC or Noveske but the election was coming too fast and couldn't wait.
How'd I do?
-DBLAction454
You would have been holding out in vain. You can't do much better than a DD... excellent choice.
Piece of crap. I'll give you $500 for it right now. LOL

Jet,
I just reread my post and I think I came off as a smart a$$.
What was meant is that 4 MOA is definitely doable with a good shooter but you bet a smaller dot makes it easier.
I will add that with a 2 MOA dot Aimpoint I can get faster hits than a 4 but financially the advantage doesn't seem worth the gain to switch my Aimpoint to the new 'cool stuff on the block'.
If I have the opportunity before hitting at distance I will crank the dot down on the 4 mil T1 to make it smaller and cover up less of the target. The problem with that (especially if its a bright clear day) is that this makes the dot slightly more difficult to pick up at speed b/c the dot is more translucent.
-Jax
Jet,

No worries, I didn't take it that way. Your points are spot-on. I had re-read my post, and didn't want to sound like my take on the subject was a definitive one.
And to keep on thread topic, here's my wife's new rifle, built (mostly) by her, to her own specs:
http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff122/jet1966/ARMods/IMG_1345smaller.jpg
Very nice first rifle, you bought right... Get a sling and maybe a light and its done.. Shoot the crap out of it. Post up a range report if you can.
Do you like the way it shoots?
Nice rifle! All of the keymod pics I've seen recently are tempting me something awful, I think my next build will go that route.
Thanks! As for the NSR, I cant recommend it highly enough!

Thanks for your opinion on dot sizes. I've been leaning towards the 2MOA in order to give my astigmatism less to work with. And your comment about it still being easy to pick up (especially after being used to an EOTech) pretty much sealed the deal for me. Thanks.

Finally got to zero my N4 with the Comp M2 and Larue M68 mount. I'm not the best shot, but I'm happy with my last 5 shot group.

Daniel Defense M4 V5 with the heavy barrel.
As the owner of an LMT MRP and HK MR556 this made me laugh.
Awesome set up. Did you modify the NSR to accept the QD attachment in that position?
When I played around with my NSR QD attachment, I came to the conclusion that it couldn't be mounted all the way forward like in your photo. I have mine back one slot from the front. If mounted all the way forward, the little tab doesn't reach far enough to lock in front of the rail and causes the QD mount to not sit flush and not have an interference fit with the NSR, unless you modified the NSR so it would fit?
Sorry I didn't get to you sooner. I just now saw your post.
First, thanks for the compliment.
To answer your question, I did not modify the NSR or the QD mount in any way. However, for the reason you pointed out my QD mount is no longer in the position shown in the picture. It's been moved to the back end of the handguard right in front of the upper receiver. I'm still trying to determine exactly where I want it.

You are welcome, that rifle is nice! I figure someone out there is going to grind a spot on the front of their NSR so that they can mount the QD all the way up front.

-Jax
Yes. 2 mags. 60 rounds. Which those Lancers don't have the extra round space like a pmag so they're kinda hard to seat on a closed bolt. I'll probably down load them to 28 rounds each.
Mine (with 16" brl, 13.5 NSR, M600C, T1, A5, and Redi Mod) weighs 8.8 lbs empty.
Yeh the RediMod definitely kills any feathery light feel but I feel the advantages overcome the weight for my application.
I ran a Redi Mod for the first time in a class a few weeks ago. While noticeable, the weight did not really bother me.

Have to agree with Doc Holiday. This rifle is one of the reasons I'm building an SBR.
Having never used either the Geissele SD-3G or the SSA, is there a reason you picked that trigger specifically?
As for this being a picture thread, here's my first-ever AR-15. Just finished it about a month ago.
• PSA Lower and LPK
• Spike's buffer assembly
• BCM 16" mid-length upper
• 11" Troy Bravo rail and rear sight
Thanks, and great job on your first AR build :)
RE: Triggers....that particular rifle normally has a SD-C (the Super Dynamic version of the SSA) in it as it's my primary HD rifle, and I wouldn't use a SD-3G for any serious purposes.
The SD-3G is just such an awesome feeling, and incredibly fun trigger to shoot a lot of rounds with in non serious use capacities. It truly has a narcotic like feel that makes it hard to resist shooting with.

I finally purchased an EOTech XPS-2 and Surefire M952 to finish off my M4. Then I replaced the weapon light's head with a Surefire 120 lumen LED KX4 conversion kit. Also added the Surefire dual remote switch that mounts directly to the picatinny rail. This setup is perfect for me. My problem is that I can't get pics to upload here now.
Let me work on it.

My new build. CMMG lower with DD lpk, Rainier Arms 16" select barrel midlength 1/8 twist 5.56, Rainier Arms extreme comp, 15" Rainier/Samson rail, BCM low pro gas block, Magpul front and rear sights, Magpul MOE grip. The wife ordered me a R Guns NiB coated BCG for my birthday. Now, I know, I know but I'm gonna upgrade the extractor with the BCM kit and run it until my DD bolt gets here. Saving for a scope but I am falling in love with my brother-in-law's EOtech... Sorry for the crappy cell pic. Will post better ones later.

Thank you.
The TA44 is ideal for me. I'm not going to be shooting over 200 at anything really but anything within 100 is toast. I shot to 200 with it pretty easily. Today I plan on trying 300, 400, & 500 if its not too windy. I have one on my .22 upper an have used it in steel challenges. It's a hair slower that close compared to irons or an eotech (my good friend was running an eotech and we are real comparable with a rifle and he edged me by tents of a second nearly every stage). But the slight magnification really helps, to me, at 100 and beyond. I've grown up shooting magnified optics so to me is what I really like. I'll try to report back on the longer range stuff today.

My last post was a little double speak. To clarify I won't be shooting at anything living (coyotes) over 200 yards. Really probably over 150 either. But I don't mind banging steel at 300 and beyond with it. The wind is dead calm right now but I won't get to shoot until this evening after work. If I can hit my 20" plate at 500, I'll be happy.

Thanks for the compliment!
I wanted to keep the light at 12 o'clock; couldn't put a front sight in front of that. And I didn't want my front sight right up behind the light switch either.
But my idea remained to keep a front sight as far forward as possible for the longest sight radius on a 10" rail without interfering with the light whatsoever, so I put on some offsets. Set up for me, a left hander...

The report on the TA44SG-10 ACOG and DD CHF 10.3" barrel at 200+.
200 yards on a 13.25"x7.5" ar500 steel target was too easy. 55 grain FMJ's out of a 10.3" 1:7 DD CHF barrel with a 60 yard zero. Moved back to 300 and it was a little more tricky. The POA moved under the dot about half way between the dot and the bottom of the big circle. I hit a few times on the small steel but the 22" plate was easy. Moved to 400 and connected once out of 5 on the big plate so I didn't try anymore. Didn't try at 500 either. No pics or video as I was running low on time and light. The TA44SG-10 is 1.5x magnification. It has a 2 MOA dot inside of a 20 MOA circle. At 100 with the ammo I was using, it's roughly 1.5-2 MOA. Maybe better if I tried some heavier bullets. For what I need this for, which I haven't quite figured out yet, its plenty good enough. This is so soft shooting. The battlecomp with the adjustable gas block really makes the recoil impulse pleasant. The concussion from the muzzle is taking some getting used to, but its not terrible.

Wormy,
Thanks man for the feedback on the optic. Much appreciated.
At what distance do you think the extra 50% magnification makes a positive difference on target in comparison to 1X RDS? I know it'll vary from shooter to shooter and target size but was wondering about this.
I know I'll have to buy one to figure this out myself. Why can't there just be a tactical gear rental store nearby so I can try out all this stuff first!

Yeah it's Surefire.
Unlike most of Surefire's other products, it's actually about 1/2 the cost of Magpul ladder rail covers (you get 3 ladder rail covers but each is shorter than Magpul ladder rail cover, but for the same cost).

For me, because all I've ever really used extensively is magnified optics, I always benefit from slight magnification at any distance, any size target. At my local 3 gun matches with my TR24G Accupoint, from 25 to 50 yards, I almost always put it on 1.5x or 2x. If the targets are just super close and there are a lot of them, I'll switch to 1x. I've tried an eotech xps2-0 and really never liked it. It's fast up close but at distance, 50 yards, I'm slower as I really slow down to make sure I'm on target. The slight magnification allows me to speed up at those medium distances for sure. To me, the TR24 1-4x is the perfect optic for most all scenarios, its just too damn heavy. I think I'm going to put it on my sbr for a bit and see how far I can reach with 4x.

Thanks Doc. I haven't shot a match since August and this particular range's farthest shots are 200 max. That's why I ran the shorty. I think I would have shot better with my regular 3 gun AR, but the shorty needed to be shot. I ran about 100 rounds of Tula through it and it did fine. I'm going to mess with my gas a little more to see if I can tune it down some more. This gun is so fun to shoot.

I noticed you have a magnifier for both the Eotech and the Aimpoint. Which one is more comfy for you?
I'm not the person you're asking, but a magnifier behind an eotech is, in my opinion, far far superior than a magnifier behind an aimpoint. You really have to try them side by side to see why, but basically, a 3x magnifier makes a 2 moa red dot look like a 6 moa red dot, while it keeps a 1 moa eotech dot looking like a 1 moa eotech dot.

No it doesn't.
The eotech dot will look smaller under magnification. The Aimpoint dot will look the same size. It will be physically larger, of course, but the image/target will be physically larger to match. The dot's size in proportion to the target does not change (magnified aimpoint)

We're saying the same thing.
We're saying the same thing.
I guess, but you said the 2 MOA dot would look like a 6 MOA dot. But that 2 MOA dot that you think looks like 6 MOA will cover 2 inches at 100 yards.
From my perspective, if the dot covers ~2" at 100 yards, it doesn't look like 6 MOA

I've been using the 2 and 4 MOA Aimpoints with 3x magnifiers for years. Today I was playing with an EXPS 3 at the local shop and put a magnifier behind it. The reticle grew with the magnification just like the Aimpoint.
I don't understand how people say an EoTech's reticle will not magnify with a magnifier behind it but the Aimpoint's LED will... If this was true, the 1 MOA EoTech dot would now be 1/3rd MOA if it stays the same size but the target magnifies.
Nothing changes from what I can tell. Both are still the same MOA. Is there something I'm missing? Believe me, I wish this was the case as I'd love a 1/3 MOA dot under magnification but still a 1 MOA dot without.
A quick search shows this video, where you can clearly see the dot of the EoTech, under magnification, grow larger with the target, just the same as an Aimpoint. So, just as an Aimpoint will stay 2 or 4 MOA, the EoTech will stay 1 MOA?

The reason, iirc, is that the eotech dot is extremely small in reality, but the dot blooms up to about 1 moa without magnification or if we're using Warp's terms, 1/X moa where X is your magnification level. The circle does indeed grow/shrink however.

I don't see what the problem is either way. Of course the reticle is going to be magnified. so is the target.
The problem is that there's possibly wrong information out there about how an EoTech works with a magnifier. Of someone reads that there's no change in dot size appearance when magnified, then they'll expect better accuracy and may lean towards an optic they may not have wanted to begin with.
Then, only later do they find that the dot does in fact magnify with everything else, same as the Aimpoint.
That's a problem here. Nothing wrong with misunderstanding. There is something wrong when others let it go, unchallenged, generally speaking. Just like some guys saying a standard gas port on a 10.5" is .093 and others saying it's .067 for a particular manufacturer. Both can't be right, so posting the correct info is important here.
Since it's a pic thread.... Here's an older pic.
