Well, they are not really needed... They are mainly for fully-auto lowers to prevent the pins from walking. Even then, really not necessary. I purchased them years back, not knowing better.

Evil, I know some people don't like to give up their honey holes, but where do you find such quality SD 5.56? I only shot 5.56 and can never find any of that? I have seen the TAP, but it was only available to LEOs. Is the gold dot 5.56? Any help would be appreciated. Maybe a pm.

Oh hell, I don't mind telling! Most are venders from this site. Only thing is I bought all this back 1.5 years ago. The 5.56 TAP T2 is unobtainium now and the XM556FBIT3 and XM223SP1( identical to Fed Fusion) were overruns and sources dried up. But, Fed RXM556T3 is basically rejected XM556FBIT3 and it's out now. I'll send you a PM of the sources shortly.

Does this one meet with the approval of the AR experts on this side of the M4 house? Bone dead stock at this point, needs some additional accessories to make it a useful member of the family. Some sling mounts and a BFG two point will be first, still deciding what optic I may just throw my EOtech on her or perhaps I'll leave it irons.

AR Picture is a stickied thread within AR GD (you can see it if you look in the header, above). A couple of photos and general accessorizing questions make a great Facebook status update, but isn't enough meat for a stand-alone thread.

They lead to a crappy trigger pull when used with a good trigger. Not as good as geissele pins.

Jaxman7 - how have you been liking the Magpul Scout Mount? Haven't been able to put mine through its paces other than just indoor range stuff. Bulk aside, so far I like it.

I have been going back and forth between the Magpul Cantilever Rail and Scout Mount, but have wondered about the IWC mount and how that might compare...

Your Eotech is on backwards.

Really? OK, good to know.

(I need to get out more...)

Not only is the eotech backwards but it should never be mounted on the rail

It's a 100 dollar sight mark. Its mounted the correct way and has an Changeable reticle lever under the rear of it. It's actually the red dot for my sig 522 tactical 22lr. It won't handle the recoil of the 223/5.56. I tried having it mounted all the way back to co-witness. It took me awhile to figure out it wasn't where I had it mounted (all the way back and everywhere in between) it would t hold zero. I'm guessing that's why it has a QD on it, so you can easily throw it out of your way. It worked well on the 22lr, and I already had it so I tried to make it work... I'm saving for an aim point.

Agreed,

Beav- If it is indeed mounted in the correct direction- the reason it should be moved off the alpha rail is that the zero could very well wonder as the rail shifts slightly. I've seen it happen at classes. It is especially bad to mount the optic "bridging the gap" so make sure to move it all the way onto the receiver. As far as the rear sight- the further back you move it, the longer you make your sight radius. I do know some people that absolutely can't run them all the way back and run them one notch forward. In general though- its best to move it all the way back.

On a side note- one of my best friends (ex ranger, great shooter). Had his mbuis 2 notches forward and every time i saw his gun i gave him shit about it. He kept stating it just didn't look right (when sighting in) when he had it all the way to the rear. After a while i asked him what he was talking about and he said the sight picture was not tight enough when it was all the way back. I picked up his gun and flipped up the other tighter aperture. He was like "Woah! What the ****!" and played with that for a good 10 minutes. Then he moved his sight back and was all stoked for the rest of the day.

Just a thought- might be why you have it moved up a little.

Thanks, see about for the fake eoTech mounted off the receiver. I dont have a reason for the rear Mbus. With the 13" rail it has a long sight radius and that's where it felt comfortable when I shoot it with the stock collapsed. The sightmark reflex was a 100 dollar optic I bought for a 22lr a couple years ago. The only reason it was so far forward off the receiver was to try and get the cowitness. But it wouldn't hold a zero after a couple rounds no matter where it was mounted. It's no longer on the gun. http://i983.photobucket.com/albums/ae311/freakingstang/Guns/null_zpsa46bf001.jpg

HighDesert,

As per usual from Magpul the Scout mount is fantastic-and at less than $10 it is a steal. The mount's ramp indexes my thumb perfectly to activate the tail cap. Here is a link to a small write up I did on it:

KAC, Troy, Gear Sector, Surefire, BCM, VLTOR, and ERGO Rail ladders.

It's good to see someone tie down their sensitive items. I've only ever seen a M68 fall off, probably due to the large thumb knob on the mount easily being jarred loose.

First Centurions and first 14.5's. Both BCM lightweight middies. CMR feels exquisite in hand. C4, unsurprisingly, has better balance. Waiting for my range card to figure out the buffer set up. Yes, I have A5's, but no differing weight buffs to be found so may use carbine as a stopgap.

I've been debating posting my small crew with all the killer AR's posted before mine, but I figured it was time I shared what I have.

I'm a southpaw, so I've added a few things because of that. From top to bottom.

Colt LE6920 with Magpul MOE hand grip, fore grip, trigger guard and stock. Troy/VTAC Delta rail, Troy BUIS, Troy ambi bolt release, BADASS ambi safety and a BCM Gunfighter Mod A44 ambi charging handle. It will be getting an Aimpoint PRO come Christmas time.

Next in line is my USM4 OD Green lower with Magpul MOE hand grip, fore grip, trigger guard and CTR stock. Geissele SSA, Troy Delta rail, Troy ambi bolt release, Armalite ambi safety and a BCM Gunfighter Mod 4 charging handle. The scope is a Leupold Mark AR Mod 1 3x9x40 mounted on Burris Xtreme extra high rings. The upper is a Palmetto State Armory M4 Premium carbine with FN barrel, and a BCM bolt carrier group.

Last is a BCM standard M4 carbine upper with a Rubber City Armory bolt carrier group, and a BCM Gunfighter Mod 4 charging handle on a Noveske stripped lower I put together. This my fan boy build as I used Noveske take down pins and a Noveske end plate. It has a Troy BUIS, Magpul MOE hand grip, hand guard, L9 rail and trigger guard. The stock is the Rogers Super Stoc off my LE6920, the fore grip is an Magpul AFG2 and it has a Armalite ambi safety. I had a bit of spare parts lying around, and used that as an excuse to put this one together.

Shot VERY well at 100yds today, and cycled a couple hundred rounds very well. This is the smoothest shooting rifle Ive ever had, and when compared side by side with a 16" carbine, it was like night and day. With the Gunfighter Comp, I have NO muzzle rise. I was worried about buying it at first, but it was totally worth my money. I love how this rifle handles.

Question for Stick and LSHD: Do you guys still think the DD RIS2 family of rails is still a viable option given all the recent designs? (KAC, Noveske, Centurion, Etc...) Not trying to pick a fight, just genuinely curious since I have never owned a DD rail.

I'm not Stick or LSHD, but I run the DD RIS II rails too. I think they are still definitely a viable option. Not saying the rails you listed are bad, but here are my thoughts on them:

KAC - very innovative company, but they tend to be first with something and then everyone else improves upon it to the point where the original KAC product is over-priced and outdated.

Noveske - the NSR is a cool handguard. Slim with nice aesthetics. I don't care for the attachment/barrel nut system at all, though. No anti-rotational feature unless you modify your upper. Also, impossible to get it properly indexed without trial and error.

Centurion - their stuff is really good and is my second choice behind DD. Simple, rugged, and uses a USGI barrel nut. I just don't care for the profile. It's too tall to me.

The DD lockup on their RIS II rails is bulletproof. 6 locking bolts plus anti-rotational tabs...that rail isn't going anywhere and gives me the utmost confidence for front sights, aiming lasers, etc. I like the RIS II rails due to the shorter profile with the bottom of the rail tucked up tight. The removable bottom is very nice as well. You go shoot a class in the rain and you can still get to your barrel to wipe it down/oil it.

Just my humble opinion.

Negative. The KAC BUIS are take-offs from the SR-15. I replaced them with 45 degree off-sets. Kind of hard to tell from the pics, but they're on there.

I may or may not use the BUIS. I might replace them with HK 416 irons. I haven't really made up my mind yet. This is actually my first upper purchase. Up to this point I've assembled uppers myself. The SR-15 is the best investment I've made WRT the AR platform. Maybe I'll see you at the range. ;)

Just a word of caution, OE HK 416 sights have a different height. There is a clone version that would work with a standard AR15 like what you have.

Roger. Tracking all. I was using the Centurion Arms C4 rear diopter you're referring to and I'm tracking the height differences between those and the OEM HK irons. If I run a RDS I plan to get the HK height LaRue mounts and see if it works out.

Personally, I am not a fan of the way the NSR feels. It was too small and it bugged me, weird, I know. After tossing around a Noveske 16" with a 13.5" NSR, I thought the balance was way off. Ive never held a KAC rail that wasnt a RIS, and I have no experience with the CMR. The RIS 2 has a solid lockup system, especially when compared to the NSR. It balances a carbine out well, and while I wont use all the rail space on it, I appreciate the profile of the entire rail system.

And damnit, it looks pretty damn good too.

Barrel is the baseline Alexander Arms 24" medium-heavy, with a Rainier Arms extended gas block pinned on. Muzzle brake is custom by Ross Schuler. Handguard is the Daniel Defense MFR 12.0, cerakoted by Gulf Coast Shooting. Buttstock is a CavArms C1 with a couple Mount 'N Slot sling swivel sockets I installed. It's pretty light for a 24" rifle, coming in at 8 lbs 10 oz without the scope.

Great minds.... :) Does the SBR move much when the case is shut? Looks like you have everything in that lower slab of foam? (mine came with 2 slabs of pick n pluck).

Nice to see everything in there. I'm going to break the gun down and see how much I can fit. Hopefully a lower, SBR upper, 14.5 upper, an area for pistol/rifle mags, suppressor, Aimpoint micro, and the variable leupy. Also IFAK and ammo boxes somewhere.

Changed:

-Noveske STS to BAD ASS 45 (AC-Thanks brother!)
-Shaved FSB.....hurt my heart to do that.:)
-MOE handguard to Centurion 10"
-Unity Tactical hub, BUIS, & off set mount
-Shaved rear A2 sight to KAC 600 meter

Weight 7.15 lbs empty

I could've gone longer with the rail but I've found out I can do everything I need to do with that length rail and keep the weight down and have the rifle balance better by keeping gear like lights further to the rear. Loving this little rifle even more after changing a few things.

It works great for me. My thumb naturally rests on the activation pad when I shoot and it doesn't come close to obstructing the front sight at all.

Does the SBR move much when the case is shut? Looks like you have everything in that lower slab of foam? (mine came with 2 slabs of pick n pluck).

I did some tweaking since that pic was taken. The rifle is in solid but the pistol and can were falling out.

I only got one layer of pick and pluck but I had some other layers of flat foam. I was able to get the guns higher up which stopped the pistol and can from moving.

nice looking rifle. how do you like the GRSC ?

also , good looking start to a nice 300blk ;)

Thanks. I took the GRSC out yesterday to sight-in. Did a rough zero at 25 per instruction/recommendation, and then pushed it out to 100 for refinement. Initial grouping was not that impressive, about a 2 inch spread (me not the equipment), but after the warm-up I tightened it up and was able to consistently hit quarter-sized groups with subsequent adjustments. It was a nice clear morning at the range and I was able to get good daylight illumination from the scope (zeroed with the illum. off). The glass is as clear as any comparable high quality optic I've looked through. Reticle is a blast to use. Literally. Build quality is very solid. I like the buisness-like subtle appearance and the fact that it's not saturated with company logos. Overall, a highly underrated scope. A shame it's often over-looked. A "best kept secret" if you ask me. ;)

Thanks bro! The funny thing is that people always come over and in conversation to their gun show pals, always seem to think that we are gouging prices. They can't grasp the concept that ARs are not all the same. I will have to say that I can quickly read the guys that come up and know that these are quality rifles because they can properly pronounce Geissele and Noveske..... :D

What you mean not as nice? It's a Daniel Defense and you seem to have all the right accessories on it. I'd say it's just as nice.

Like others have said, you don't need 5 lbs of attachments to your weapon to have a nice ar. I love the simplicity of your setup... its very similar to mine actually. That's one of the things I've enjoted about my DDM4: it may cost a little more than a walmart colt, but it came almost exactly how I wanted it, only changes I've made are a sling, light, stock and grip, but I was still plenty happy with the out of the box config when I bought it.

Just used a computerized stencil maker. Laid down the first color of cerakote, did a 20 minute flash curing, placed the stencil, shot the top color, and a final bake in the oven to finish it off.
