Hey Wormy I'm actually looking at painting my gun using the same color scheme you did for the bottom (Desert one). What colors of paint did you use? Brand?

I usually use krylon camo colors, tan, brown and green.
That is rustoleum's camo colors. Tan and brown. There are two tans but I can't remember which one I used.

Looks like you've got something attached to the end of the scope, care to enlighten me on it? Thanks!

Is the Sunshade in contact with the flip up front sight? If so does it force the objective upwards when mounting it?

Same thing I was thinking. And why even have sights on it as it doesn't look like a QD setup. YMMV

you gentlemen are correct! as of last week, I took off the sights and used them on a new project that i'm working on. the scope is a vortex pst 6-24x50 with nightforce mounts, the glass is clean and clear. i'm planning to get a larue spr qd mount when the funds allow. sorry for the late reply, its been a busy week for me at work.

I've been participating in two 1.5 MOA M14 challenges on some other forums. One forum requires four 5-shot groups under 1.5 MOA on one clean sheet of paper, the other forum requires five 5-shot groups. I've managed to complete both challenges at both 100 and 200 yards with two different rifles. Here are mine...

One is an LRB with a medium weight Criterion barrel and a carbon graphite kevlar stock that I bedded myself.

The other is a standard M1A in a Blackfeather chassis. Both challenges were shot using a Bassett scope mount and the same Zeiss Conquest 3-9x50mm scope.

The LRB...

Thankfully some members convinced me to try the Rainier Ultramatch barrel (Shilen).

This is from the very first outing with handloads/match ammo. Loads selected at random.

Upper 5 groups shot with 24.0 Varget and 77 Nosler Custom Comps. Bottom 5 groups are some load except topped off with 77 Berger tactical OTM (I only bought these because they were all my local store had above 70 grains and I'm sure glad I did).

Note: I know not many will believe this but it's the honest truth and I would never be so pathetic as to lie over something so insignificant. But anyway, I was getting frustrated with my results with the Noslers and got careless and quickly aimed at the wrong bullseye on the bottom left group. I drew a circle where it would have been. If I would have known the Bergers were going to shoot so well and I would be posting them, I would have put a new target up for them or at least taken a pic of the target showing the 1 hole before shooting the Bergers. Because of that shot I shot the Bergers in reverse order taking my last 5 shots of the day into the .477" group.

This is by far the best I've ever shot with a semi-auto. Can't wait to tweak some loads.

Only had 33 rounds of cheap walmart ZQI down the tube before this outing. This barrel doesn't seem to be picky bc it shot those very well also.

Nice results DirtyBoy. My 18" intermediate UltraMatch shoot lights out for me too. Is this the SPR or intermediate barrel?

It looks like the Varget load is treating you as well as it treated me. Try some XBR instead of the Varget. It's MUCH easier to work with and gives me very similar results. It drops consistently like ball powder.

Dirtyboy333
11-27-14, 11:12
Onyx: thanks for the compliment. Yeah that 24.0 load I got from you and it's awesome but I couldn't find any SMKs. It's an SPR rifle length gas (which is on sale right now for $295!!!, I paid $360 and still think it's a steal). I'm definately all about trying some new powder because metering with Varget is a giant pain in the ass. My meter throws it so inconsistently. XBR will be what I buy next.

I know the Nosler custom comps are excellent bullets and have rave reviews but I have not had luck with them in my MWS and now this rifle. Idk why.

I really haven't had much luck with them either, but I know a lot of people have. I wish they would work since they are so cheap.

I just picked up one of the SPR barrels they had on sale. I have an extra barrel nut sitting in a box, so I have to build another upper. One small extra part always seems to magically turn into a new rifle/upper... It's crazy!

Dirtyboy333
11-28-14, 00:26
Haha I know feeling. An extra barrel nut and a good price on a barrel (one that you pretty much already have) was all that it took to get you started into another upper.

Ok let's try this again....what exactly constitutes a "precision" rifle? IMO, slapping a scope on any AR does not make it precision!

A precision match barrel, magnified optics, and a nice 2-stage trigger.

This is a picture-posting thread. If people want to create a thread about what constitutes a precision rifle, they need to do it outside this thread.

If you want to be a problem child and instigate fights in every thread you post in, then you need to find another forum.

CBC or IMI 77gr OTM for target shooting (group pics posted were shot with CBC but IMI prints just as well).
BH 77gr TMK for hunting.

@100 an SMK slipped right on through, jug didn't budge.... but the TMK load behaves much differently.

Finished a new rifle this weekend and just had time to zero and shoot a couple of groups at 100 yards before Easter dinner with the family.

I have 3 other DD barrels so I am familiar with their accuracy, but I was frankly astounded with the results from this chrome lined lightweight example. The first group was ~0.8", the second under 0.5" as seen below. Both with five rounds of BH mk262 and a humble Redfield Revolution 2-7x. Total weight of the rifle including optics as show is a meager 7.10 pounds.

My apologies for the ruler, I didn't have my calipers.

Whats your take on the rail, syrac adj. gas block, and the 18in shilen? Also how much use you got out of them?

All the parts are top notch and come together to make a great shooting, and very solid rifle. The adjustable gas block isn't really needed with an 18" rifle-length gassed barrel, but it does give you the ability to gas it down to a point there is zero recoil either with the can or without it. I'm watching my shots impact at 300 because the gun just doesn't move. I love the Geissele rail. It's well machined and well thought out. It's very rigid, which was perfect for this build.

Here's a few groups using Hornady 75gr BTHP hand loads @ 2750fps:

A little side note: when I shot this it was during an almost unprecedented cold spell here and when I finish shooting all those rounds, I was so cold I admittedly jumped in my truck and drove to the target to get it. Fast forward 6 weeks: I'm sitting at my house and 2 game wardens show up at my house like they're ready to raid my place. One young lady in training and another guy. Anyway instead of saying something to me the guy over at the pistol range video taped me driving. I always take care of the game land range and put targets in middle of backboard etc. Just this one day It cold combined with some laziness. So, this target ended up costing me big money. Not sure if it was worth it or not until II find out exactly how much.haha

That was the thread(18in precision rifle gas thread) I read also Dirty boy, and I knew it was Mr.onyx but I didn't realize Mr.Colter that spoke so highly of the shilen, as so many others seem to also, I must admit all three of you helped guide me that direction months ago.(thank you guys for such factual non-biased information that's why I've came to like this forum so much in recent years)I don't seem to see as many others speaking as highly of the Douglas even though its defiantly good enough for what it was designed for. I also saw where you posted that target in the moa Challenge Dirty boy, sorry to hear it cost you a chunk of change I hope they understand it was just a honest mistake. Thank You so much dirtyboy,Onxyz, and thecolter. All of yow have helped me more than you know. Now I've just got to get around to telling Pappabear, Markm, and Molon the same. Here's one I've been playing with recently. Some of it was out of the spare parts bin so there are a few items I wouldn't mind changing, but overall it accomplishes what I want. Shoots a consistent 1moa with 3/4moa groups pretty easily attainable. It likes a pretty firm hold so I added a loop of paracord to a shooting mat and that allows me to really load into the bipod. Not very practical for field use but I like to see what it can do in ideal conditions.

Mostly DD parts, Lothar Walther bbl, Bushnell FFP 3-12.

I just put the finishing touches on my updated recce/DMR. I tried out an 18" barrel but I found myself wanting to go back to a 16" mid-length, it just felt right. I also tried an offset red dot sight but ended up not liking it but I had already moved my Griffin Armament Fail Safe Sights to my 2-gun rifle so I picked up a set of Magpul offsets.

Nice set up! What kind of groups have you seen with the Rainier barrel? Im using the same barrel in my Recce build.

You shouldn't worry about the accuracy, one reason I chose the Rainier Arms barrel is their accuracy guarantee, if it doesn't shoot they'll take it back and additionally I bought it from Brownells so if I'm not happy with it, they'll take it back too. That being said, this barrel is living up to the guarantee, I'm getting consistent sub-MOA groups with factory match shooting 77 SMK's. The last regional DMR match that I shot in I nailed a 10" bonus plate at about 445 yards shooting from the sitting off a tie down strap and ended up placing first.

so far, i have only be able to shoot out to 100 yards. still doing some bullet/load development, but with 53 gr Sierra Matchkings and 55 gr Sierra BlitzKings, it's shooting consistent .50" or so 5 shot groups at 100. it also likes the 69gr and 77gr MatchKings. looking forward to trying those to shoot out to 500 or 600 yards.

well, i gotta admit, this post is to brag a little. been trying different bullets and powders in the Krieger, and i think i finally hit on a winning combo, at least for 100 yards.

55 gr Berger HPBT match flat base bullets on top of 21.0 to 21.4 grains of Reloader 7. all 5 shots at 100 yards. groups were .29", .45", .61", .55". the last group without my induced flyer was 4 shots @ .170"! I guess AR's can shoot up there with the bolt guns. i am a happy camper. ;)

KAC SR25 ACC with Leupold Mk6 3-18x with H59 reticle and Aimpoint T1 in offset mount. Bipod is KACs newest offering and exceeds the capability of the Atlas. Accuracy with 168 and 175gr FGMM is between .60 and 1" at 100m for five rounds. If you need a capability beyond 500m but still want to clear rooms, this is the answer!

Here's a stupid question(probably) but I'm gonna ask anyway. 300 yd range and farther....it would seem to me that spreads would be more windage than elevation. But on the great groups I see here the extreme spread seems to be more elevation? What variables would cause windage(other than wind. Duh) spreads and what variables would cause elevation spreads(other than velocity)?

Hi,

I'm new to owning an AR-15...shot plenty of M16's and Colt 9mm subs as a LEO. This is my first build which is only a couple of months old. I haven't started reloading for it yet but I can tell you that I can put 9 out of 10 shots within an inch with Federal Match 69 grainer's.

Please forgive the Star Wars Thordsen stock. I live in NY state and would rather shoot it than stash a traditionally built one to make a political point.

That does look like it came out of Star Wars Dan! Lol
A good friend told me once, what is the purpose of building/buying a weapon you cannot train with. When the day comes that you need to use it, you're going to be more of a liability than an asset. I agreed then and now.
Oh btw I just picked up a Thordsen cheek weld pistol stock and I will be training with it also.
Does the stock take some getting used to?

* Stag Lower
*Hipertouch 24 E trigger set at about 2.5 lbs
* Odin extended magazine release (Because the Thordsen stock places one's hand behind the action, changing the ergonomics)
*AXTS Ambi 45 deg safety (Ditto)
* Spike's Carbine Buffer Tube, T2 Buffer and SS Spring
* Thordsen FRS-15 stock
*Troy Triggerguard

The upper is from JSE Surplus
*Wilson Arms 18" Bull Barrel, 223 Wylde
*Aero Precision Upper Receiver
*YHM TJ Handguard
*Warne Skel Mount
*Bushnell Elite Tactical 2.5-16x42 Scope
* Standard Mil Spec Bolt

Don't have an exact weight...I figure about 10.5-11 lbs. I wouldn't want to be humping mountains with it.

Actually the stock handles like a traditional sporting rifle. It's actually very comfortable. You do need an ambi safety though and an extended magazine release is nice as well because your hand is placed behind the action instead of underneath it, changing the ergonomics some. With these minor changes the rifle handles very well. Just space age looking.

Built my first one recently. Still waiting on the scope to come so I can try her out!

That's a very nice looking SPR labeef. What's the specs on it? Did you start with an SPR for varmints? What kind of bipod is that? Haven't seen any like that before.
One more thing - what kind of glass are you putting on it?
It's a fine looking AR. Good job!

Thanks man! I really like it so far. Here's a few of the main components,
20" barrel from ballistic advantage
Geissele smr mk4 15"
Northtech upper and lower
Geissele trigger
Magpul prs
There's lots more and I can email you the spreadsheet of all the parts if ya want.
I built it for prairie dogs primarily. The bipod is from vltor and I really like it because it makes the rifle sit really low and steady.
I recently got a trijicon accupower 4-16 power on sale and have yet to mount it and try her out.

Prairie dogs? Makes perfect sense. I looked at your handle and saw "beef" saw the open ranch-like land in the background of your photo and guessed it was something to do with critters. My best man at my wedding (previous marriage) was from Montana and we used to shoot the prairie dogs on his wife's ranch. Holes are hell on cattle.
Well you have some solid parts on that AR. I'm a huge fan of ballistic advantage barrels. I have a 14.5 and am waiting for the 18" to get back in stock and I'll be picking up a 10.5 soon. They are great barrels.
For your first AR you did a fantastic job!

The beef part is a long story and goes back to my high school football nickname ha. But yes prairie dogs can be a huge problem for cattle.

Other minor upgrades include a KAC ambi CH, QD end plate, trigger guard, Magpul ACS, MOE+ grip and RSA. The factory 20" CL barrel has been ball milled and cut down to 16" and an adjustable gas key has been installed to help control the gas flow into the carrier. It also wears a coat of babyshit RAL-8000 Cerekote. I would also like to add a Geissele DMR trigger at some point and might consider an 18" SS barrel.

Did you consider having the barrel cut down to 18" instead of 16" or is the 18" tied to the barrel also being stainless?

No. The original plan was to cut down the barrel to 16" in order to get the shortest length possible without having to eFile and while retaining a rifle length gas system. I'm still undecided between running this as either a dedicated precision or battle rifle. If I ultimately decide to keep it in a run-and-gun configuration then the 16" configuration is optimal for that purpose. If I decide that I would rather keep this as a dedicated precision rig, then I'll consider going stainless with an 18" barrel. But first I've got to get back out to the range and continue to test it and see if I've resolved the gas issue discussed in the dedicated MWS thread.

That makes perfect sense. Purpose drives everything.
I'll try to find that thread, I've deal with gas issues on a couple of my weapons, maybe I can help or at least learn something.

Back in April I posted on here, complimenting someones SPR and said I was waiting for my barrel, BCG and trigger. Well, I have those things now, I even have an optic. So I'm ready to post my pics. I'm working on setting up a range so I can get it out and do some work with it, so I owe a range report. It's exciting to have it finished, because when i built my first AR, a 16" DD barreled outfit, I didn't even have an intention of building an SPR (or another AR for that matter.)

Then I saw my friends SPR and knew right then I needed to build one. (SBR"s, Recce's all came in due time also.) So I had to include a pic of it - it is absolutely one of my favorite AR's period, there is just something about it that I like. (Noveske barrel, Noveske switchblock, USO glass, what is not to like??)

First of all, I am not a stylish photographer capture the nuances of light on a cold winter morn. I just take pictures with my iphone and hope for the best.

I really thought this was a cool pic, bipod deployed in a weird position, but AR laid in nice and true.

Yes, it's A LOT of scope for a 5.56, but I won't have a problem seeing things I want to shoot anyway. And I also may have a different home for that optic someday. Something with a little more reach.
http://i683.photobucket.com/albums/vv200/robertestx/SPR/FA34B8F9-9535-4E2B-AF97-02BCFCE8DC21_zps5xusetp4.jpg

My SPR has evolved a little during the build process. For example, I started out with a SWFA 10x42 Super Sniper scope. Not a bad scope, not bad glass, but I wanted more. The XTR II has zero Much more. Started out with a KAC 2 stage trigger. Wanted to give the LaRue a shot, besides I have other plans for the KAC 2 stage. As most know, the KAC is a good trigger once she gets broken in. THe MBT-2S is an outstanding trigger in every regard. clean, crisp, short take up. In short I like it. I like the price even more.

Here's a quick run down on parts. Let me know if you have any comments or questions.

Magpul PRS stock (Purchased from the forum with the FDE cheek riser already installed. It just kinda all fell together like that.)
Aero Precision upper and lower
DSG Arms Enhanced LPK (Removed enhanced bolt release for milspec due to bad lever
LaRue MBT-2S two stage trigger
KNS Gen 2 Mod 2 anti-rotate pins
AXTS 45/60 short throw selector switch
Magpul BAD Lever
Ballistic Advantage NiB BCG
LaRue QD LT-104 SPR Mount (Because I had one and I like LaRue mounts
Burris XTR II 5-25 x 50 scope (34mm tubes, and it is a tank) with Butler Creek caps.
G2B Mil-Dot reticl,
Front Focal Plane
Zero Stop
1/10 mil adjustment.
US Optics Swivel ACD (They gave this thing to me believe it or not.)
KAC 0-600 m rear BUIS, KAC Micro front BUIS
Ballistic Advantage 5.56 SPR barrel w/ OPS-12, Performance Series (I"m not running the OPS-12 collar and suppressor)
AAC 51T Muzzle Brake
LaRue Tactical 13.2 rail (Because it is my favorite rail (along with the C4)
Magpul AFG2
A Gazillion LaRue Index Clips
Raptor Charging handle
Hogue oversized grip with storage (for my scope batteries)
Last but definitely not least, BFG Vickers padded sling (because after humping this a while, I was thankful for the padding.
Peleton Tech. notched leg, 9-13" bipod, with pivot and pan. (TipTop)

What you don't see:
AAC 762-SDN-6 suppressor.
My can is still being held hostage by BATF and that is a whole nightmare story in and of itself. (Think gun store owner gets sick, goes into hospital, gun store shuts down. My NFA form 4 now has to be transferred to another LGS and yep, I get to start the process/paperwork ALL OVER FROM SCRATCH again. Heartbreaking. First that the gentleman is so sick, and then the 5 months I had already waited are down the flipping drain. Such is life. Well I got to experience the fingerprints and cool photo app that Silencer Shop has. Silencer Shop did say the ATF had told them they would expedite my application, but I really have no idea what that means.. I hope it means something.

That's it.

I built a chest rig for my SPR, I've got some pics and am thinking about writing a post about it over in Tactical Gear. It's a nice set up.

Thanks for looking.

And if the owner is in a hospital incapacitated? I do not believe he is in the hospital with a minor complications, I think he really really sick. Who would open the store and hand over my can? This is my first suppressor so maybe anyone can do that, but it doesn't sound right. What if he's not physically able to function? If he passes? Who manages the NFA items?
I will say that there was some speculation there were other more regulatory issues, but I'm going off what Heather at The Silencer Shop told me firsthand. Not sure what she'd gain by lying to me or BATF lying to them about the situation . I'd rather not promote a rumor until I know the facts which all I know is what I've been told.

From what I have come to understand, someone who is associated with the shop (ie a wife or co-owner) will have to finish all pending form 3's and 4's, even if said shop has closed. Again, I could be wrong, and have completely misread what I saw.

Thanks labeef. The AAC Brake is loud and obnoxious. Lol but I didn't want to install something like a Battle Comp just to remove it when I get my can. Of course that was originally supposed to be in Jan (give or take)
The AAC Brake being a little easier on the suppressor than their 51T FH is the main reason I went with brakes er their FH or their hybrid. But yeah, it's loud. I have one on my SBR as well and It's not a "neighbor-friendly" muzzle device. Lol

I love it. I got it because I wanted a decent cheek riser on my CTR stock, but also be able to have my stock only extended to the first position and be able to charge. I've found no issue whatsoever with it. It was stiff the first day, but loosened up perfectly as LaRue said it would. It doesn't slow down clearing a stovepipe or any other malfunction. It really doesn't get in the way at all.

Shot this a few months ago. IIRC was around 850 yards. 77gr tmk handloads. My friend was shooting. First time out with the new "lightweight" steel plate. I'm bummed I didn't get out again before the heat.

Here's a pic of the full bench, with some more parts for my precision 6.5G build just to keep it on topic. Fluted Lilja 319 and the rest of the parts are on their way.

I don't think I've posted here. Newest build. Things are only hand tight. Receivers came back yesterday and I wanted to see how it looked together.
Grabbed a gunshow Harris knock off yesterday too. We'll see how it works until I splurge on a nicer one. Want to upgrade the trigger first.

EDIT: Just posted this elsewhere and figured I'd update.

Got this one to where I'm done tweaking (for now). Getting ready to push it out farther, but it's consistently sub half minute @ 100 in the 168gr variety. I'm working up a video for my YT channel, going in depth and detailing the performance of a bunch of different factory match loads.
