Anyone have a suggestion or share what you use for 300 yard tactical
rifle shooting. The target will be 4 inches.
My concern is being under or overpowered optically.
I have not shot this or even been to one of these matches.
I want to try it with my mil spec ar-15 with 20 inch barrel.

Thanks for any help

Mildot Night force in either 2.5-10 or the 3.5-15. Plenty of adjustment range to fit your needs. Use the Larue 1.5, I find it fits me better than closed with the scope forward with the EER mounts, the eye relief is generous, but not that much to call for the long mount, -my opinion.

If you have multiple range engagement at once, you can learn the hold overs/unders with the mildot and be accurate and fast.

Get a low power variable with as close to true 1x as you can for close in stuff. After that for only 300, 4-5x is plenty on the upper end.

ETA: I currently run a Meopta and it's awesome. Other great ones depending on your budget:

Simmons 1.5-5x
Weaver has a 1-3x (?)
Trijicon Accu-point 1x & 1.25x(?)
Trijicon ACOG TA-11 3.5x (you can occlude the front lens for the close stuff and then switch to 3.5x)
S&B Short Dot (for the deep pockets)

Are you only shooting at 300 yards? If you're just shooting 300 yards at 4" dots I would suggest something like a 2-10 or 3-12. If it is more of a 3gun thing then a 1-4 or 1.5-5. You need to choose an optic that best matches what you are going to be using it for.

For a 4 inch target at 300, get as much scope as you can afford.

12 or 14X would be the lowest power I would use.

Dont forget to look at crosshair thickness. Thick crosshairs will obscure the target at that range.
