After a number of decades as a firearms enthusiast, I finally came to the realization a month ago or so that I wanted to enter the world of the black rifle. Don't know why I resisted as long as I did, being such a lover of firearms, but anyway... I had been given some sound advice to consider buying a Colt 6920 as my first AR. Some of you may recall I came here asking for your thoughts on the possible choice. For the most part, your recommendations were that the Colt would be an excellent first AR for anyone. Among those recommendations, there were also some recommendations for other excellent options should I decide I wanted something a little different than the Colt.

After spending some time here I knew that the Colt would be a very solid choice, but the more I considered it and learned about other possible options, the more I realized that I would likely end up taking off/replacing a good many parts (handle, stock, grip, handguard, sights, etc.) on the Colt to make the rifle the somewhat more current-day AR that I wanted it to be. And the mid-length gas system made a lot of sense to me for a 16" barrel.

I decided that getting a model which was close to what I envisioned myself ending up with would be a better option for me (and less costly) and thanks to Rob's suggestion, I decided to go with another model which he had brought my attention to... the BCM MID-16LW, a model which Bravo doesn't quite yet offer as a complete gun, but one which can easily be put together by ordering the MID-16 LW upper and their lower. That's what I did. I have had the upper for a few days, but the lower came in today and I was finally able to put it together. Here's a quick pic a snapped in the living room tonight just to give a visual. Of course, there are many rifles like this one, but this one is mine! ;-)

I plan to go with RDS or Eotech in the near future, but for now will shoot with the Troys. I love the long sighting radius this set-up offers!

I am 6'1" with longish arms, so the extended real estate offered by this setup with the ACS and the 11" VTAC TRX (vs. the tighter layout of the 6920) feels great to me.

I also wanted the mid length gas system with lo-profile block so that I would have more easy options for hand guards.

I haven't had a chance to get outside with it yet, but did run a couple of 30 round mags through it in my in-home range tonight. It's a very short, make-shift range - just 20', but that's long enough for me to be able to do some impromptu shooting when the urge strikes.

Before firing, I thoroughly cleaned and lubed the gun. I fired 30 rounds of XM193, 15 rounds of Black Hills 75gr. Match HP (new cases) and 15 rounds of Black Hills 77gr. Match HP (remanuf.). The gun ran flawlessly and dumped the rounds into a very tight cluster, albeit about 2" below center of point of aim - <edited> due to close proximity of target.

Sighting in at just 20' is only temporary, given it is my only option for first shooting.

I also bought a BCM MID-14.5 upper with pinned BC1.5 comp. And an LMT lower to pair with it. I fired 28 rnds of XM193 with the 14.5 later tonight (switched the Troys over) and it too ran without a hitch of any kind.

Thanks to all of you who helped guide me through the decision of choosing my first BR! (Yes, I too have succumbed to BRD). :(

Updating with another pic of the BCM MID-14.5

Your line of sight is 2 1/2 to 3 inches above the barrel. You cant expect ANY rifle to match POI/POA at a distance of just under 7 yards. When you go to sight in at a real range with the way your sights are adjusted now, you're going to be WAY off the paper.

Congrats!

Be sure to get yourself a sling and a way to attach it. I am fond of the Noveske Receiver Endplate replacement (http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=31766/Product/AR15_M16_QD_SLING_ADAPTER___SWIVEL) at the rear and I just ordered a VTAC Low-Profile sling mount (http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=40778/Product/LOW_PROFILE_SLING_MOUNT) to attach to the top of the rail just above the barrel nut.

This is exactly right.

DHart, when you get outdoors zero the gun at 100 or 200 yards (not 25 or 50) and then start to learn your holdovers at close range.

As Jimmy rightly points out, your sights are 2.5"+/- above your bore which means at the muzzle you'd have to hold 2.5"+/- high. Using the 2.5" number and with a 100 yard zero, line-of-sight (through the sights) crosses line-of-fire at 100 yards, so the round is 1.25" low at 50 yards, and 1.875 at 25 yards.

Hello, brother from another mother!

I think you'll really enjoy your new gun! As rob_s said, all it needs is a sling. On my similar build, I opted for the IWC QD Sling attachment for the front, which may or may not work for you depending on the sling you end up with. In the back I used the Noveske QD end plate which works quite well, but you can always just use a QD point in the stock if that's what you end up with.

Most importantly, read up on some drills and run them! :D

I like what you've done there.

You guys and your lightweights are tempting me no end though.

Thanks guys. Yes, of course... With the sights a mile high off the rifle, what was I expecting? My lever rifles all have sights virtually on the bore, so this is my first experience with sights so high off the bore.

Sling set up will get ordered... Thanks for the suggestions.

As fun as it was to shoot indoors at 20', I can't wait to get out to a quarry somewhere and really let loose with this.

Great hand guard, BTW, the VTAC TRX is very comfortable to hold, I like the slim size and rails only if and where I want them. I like keeping the rifle spare and clean. For home defense use, I may remove the Troys and only run a RDS or Eotech. 12ga pumps are my primary HD long arms anyway.

Don't know why I waited so long to join the ranks of the black rifle shooters, but Im so glad I finally did! I'm not a pessimist, but thinking about how fragile this country is becoming and how easily a major terrorist strike, natural disaster, or economic melt down could bring a breakdown of order, at least localized, I decided that having a couple of ARs in addition to shotguns and pistols made a lot of sense. Not to mention just the fun factor of the platform.

Are swivel sockets good to go? I've asked before, just I'm having a hard time swinging a Noveske rifle topped with a NF optic on a two 1/8" ball detents.

Yes, they are good to go provided you buy quality swivels.

I tried some "shock tests" with QD swivels on one of my guns. I determined that if I am being pulled away from the gun as hard as it would take to break one of these swivels, I'm probably past any problem a gun could fix anyways. :)

This is why I like this forum. I would have never bought the BM i got, not my only fyi, if I saw this place first. Good choice, eventually something similar if not the same will have a home with me one day. Enjoy the hell out of that BCM.

Been tweakin' a little. I like the LMT lower with SOPMOD stock and the Ergo grip. And I'm really happy with the performance of the TLR-1 in the 12 o'clock position. No shadow issues, no need for additional rail attachments. Keeps things very light weight and it's not in the way of the sighting picture. And I can get my support hand all the way to the front of the hand guard underneath the light where switch operation with the thumb is easy. Sweet. Probably just one more element to complete the rifle... a T1.

I'm really enjoying this rifle. Soft shooting. Stone reliable so far. Runs like a fine swiss timepiece! ;)

Lastly, I'm considering swapping out the 11" Troy/VTAC for a 13" Troy TRX Extreme... which would not increase weight at all, but would move my support hand, light, and front sight out yet 2 more inches. Only downside I can think of is that the light likely take a bit of a beating sitting right above the ports on the muzzle device. For that reason I may leave well enough alone. The rifle is shooting great just as it is.

Nice deal on the complete LMT lower, BTW, $320 including SOPMOD stock, Ergo grip, 30 rnd PMAG, and free shipping. Not a bad deal from AR15Sales.com. Though the customer service was a little wonky from the guy and the attitude was just a touch thick. All worked out fine in the end, though, and the price was awesome.

My BCM LW 16" isn't getting much shooting action from me with this 14.5" on hand. But I'm sure that will change over time.

Rob... thanks for this information. I will follow your suggestion. Between busy with my work and rainy weather, I still haven't sighted it in outdoors yet... but that will come soon! I have been busy shooting it indoors, though. Until I can get to live training I've been studying the Magpul Art of the Tactical Rifle DVD series. Some good stuff there.

Mark... Thanks, buddy. It's such a loss that we make so little in America anymore... That's killing us. When we put our minds to making quality products like these guns and the gear on them, we really turn out some superb products. Products like these make me proud of America. And the fact that we have established a government which allows us to have them. We've really got to safeguard our manufacturing and control the puppets in government to maintain our strength and the freedoms our founding fathers believed so strongly in and established for us.

Here's an image from yesterday that features the Troy rear battlesight on this gun... I like the colors and the isolation...

Very nice rifle....looks awesome (and your pro photography skills make it even more so!). Almost makes me want to rush out and buy one, actually! :D Would look very good next to the M&P15T which is similarly equipped.
