Greetings all,

I'm thinking about purchasing a Lancaster Consulting AKM 47RM carbine. It will come with one 30-round magazine. Obviously, I'd like to have more than one. Hence, my question: What are the important things to look for in 30-round 7.62x39 AK magazines? I know that there are volumes written about AR mags, but I have not found much on AK mags.

Thanks in advance.

Stay away from the American ones.

That's about it.

Sage advice!

It's a shame, but US companies just can't make quality AK magazines.

7.62x39mm mags are about as universal as it gets, Chinese, Bulgarian, Russian, Polish, Hungarian, East German, Yugoslav, Egyptian, Finnish........they all work, and work well.

Steel mags are probably the most universal, there may be some slight variations in the thickness of some of the polymer mags out there, particuarly when mating them with US stamped receivers, like the Lancaster will have.

Polymer mags will typically be Bulgarian "waffle" pattern or Polish "slabside".

Promag makes a cheap knock off of the Bulgarian mags, avoid them. Buy only the ones with a 10 in a double circle.

Bulgarian waffle polymer mags:

Polish "slabside" polymer:

Dans Ammo has a great deal on new/near new Polish steel magazines, $13.00 each shipped if you get 10 or more. www.dansammo.com

Hope that helps.

There are also currently alot of Bulgarian "Bullet" mags. They are polymer and has several pictures of bullets going down the sides. Some say they are the new Iraqi issue mag. I dunno except the work great. $16 each at Copes.

FWIW - I dropped a Polish slab-slide (fully loaded) and it shattered the body sending rounds and the spring flying around the parking lot.

Steel won't do that.

Yep, the Polish polymers aren't real heavy duty, but I'd have no issues dropping one of the Bulgarian "waffle" mags...those things are damn tough.

Where can these be acquired?

Affirm that, I wanted to check and see if they have a ten-round version of the same mag. No luck so far...

Mace, they do have a 5 round polymer waffle mag, I've not taken one apart but the old Chinese 5 rd. mags could have the follower clipped down so that it would then hold 10 rounds.

Not making any promises, but it might be an option.

Copes Distributing shows a follower that does the same for 5-rd. mags about 3/4 of the way down the AK page.
