That is a Spikes Tactical 9" BAR Rail. We are coating several for them for some new builds they are working on.

Can you guys do complete uppers and lowers? I was perusing your website for info but didn't see anything, might have missed it though. I've always wanted to get some multi-cam or a woodland camo pattern on one of my rifles, as I spend a good portion of my free-time out and about in the woods. How durable is the film you apply?

We are still in the process of getting our FFL right now. We expect to have it around the first of the year, then we can receive the lowers. It's kind of a slow process. We will make an announcement on the website and our Facebook page as well as our page on Shooters Legion as soon as our license is in hand. The finish is very durable, it receives a high grade clear coat after it is printed to protect the finish.

Thanks

This is actually Water Transfer Printing. It's the same process the large firearm manufacturers and bow manufacturers use to camo their stuff.

Here are a couple shots of my 15-22 we are working on. I'm a big fan of FDE and Desert Digital myself. Still working on the lower. The Reaper Black would look great also, that is our most popular pattern.

The XTM's run per pack (4) what is listed on the website as a single panel. Sorry don't mean to make you read between the lines, I just don't want to violate any forum rules by posting prices on here.

Nice work regardless of the process.

It's actually Water Transfer Printing, it is a film that is placed on the surface of water in a specifically designed tank then sprayed with an activator that turns the ink back into a liquid. The part is then submerged into the water and the water acts as a press to embed the ink into the base coat. Then the clear is applied. It is very durable, this is the same process used by major firearm and bow manufacturers to camo their stuff. It is well proven in the industry. I left my barrel out because I just prefer a black barrel, the finish is good up to about 300 degrees. If you run the rifle very hard I would stay away from coating the barrel, hunting rifles and such are no problem. It really just depends on the use.

Thanks

I didn't see prices for the upper & lower receivers. Even if you can't take the lowers yet, do you still have a price in mind?

Would you be doing the grip while attached to the lower, so as to have an uninterrupted design?

We would process the grip and lower separately, other wise the pattern will be distorted and stretched. Most of the time with any camo you don't notice the break in the pattern. PM'd price on receivers.

Great work Tackdriver... Ive had a couple 10-22s hydro dipped in the past. But from my experience with it I dont think I would use it on a carbine that is going to get a lot of use and take some abuse.

The rifles I had started to chip and wear on part that were rubbing the stock from taking it on and off. So I could only imagine what a carbine would look like after a day of tactical training . But since the blems are covered by the stock it isnt a big deal.

We don't use it on buffer tubes, if someone wants a buffer tube done we use Cerakote in a solid color to match the camo. The hydro stuff is a little to thick for the buffer tube. Aside from that it is very durable if it is applied correctly. Prep is the key. We use several techniques on different substrates to promote adhesion. Thanks for the compliment!

Are you noticing any more significant wear from the paint on the metal objects as opposed to the plastic parts? Or do you prime it with sanding or something else?

Yea I'm curious about the prep process too. Do you mind letting us know what you do do prior to the hydro transfer to the pieces? If you don't want to give away industry secrets I understand, but I'm really curious.

TackDriver15
12-20-10, 11:17
No difference between metal or poly at all. All metal pieces go through a chemical bath which removes all grease or oils and also etches the surface of the metal to promote adhesion. All polymer pieces are cleaned, flame treated to promote adhesion and primed with a specific primer designed for polypropylene and then the base coat is applied.

Mac5.56
12-20-10, 11:44
That's interesting. The metal I kind of assumed was sand blasted or something, but I didn't expect you to burn the plastic.

So are there any surfaces this wont adhere too?

Also, out of curiosity what is the base of the transfer? Is it a solvent based product, or a water based? Have you had any reports of it peeling, or pulling away as a result of say exposure to something like deet?

I'm not sure what the makeup of the film is. It will work on any hard surface. I haven't had any personal experience with Deet on this surface but I have heard prolonged exposure is not good for it. We are working on something now that will make our finish impervious to pretty much any chemical.

A-TAC pattern and the skulls are awesome

Can a whole Remington 870 be done in that A-TAC pattern?

Before and after of the M&P15 I just completed last night after picking up the lower receiver from local FFL. It's a Tiger Stripe Desert Digital hydrofinish.

These pictures are crappy (from my iPhone), but I will try to get some better pictures, in better light to show off the details a bit better for those who may be interested in going this route with their firearm.
