View Full Version : Major lightweight desire - what's your choice?

I posted some time back about recommending a used 6520 to a friend of mine. Well, it arrived and although a bit rough worked very well but it really got me in the mood for a lightweight.

Shortly after I decided that my safe-queen 04-05 era 6920 needed to be replaced with a new small pin, FA carrier version and that shipped yesterday. So, I'd sent an email to my friend a few days back asking him to research 6920s and current prices.

Today we got together and I hit him with my proposition. I'd trade him my large pin, cut-carrier 6920 with 600 rounds on the original carrier and 710 rounds on a replacement CMT FA carrier for his 6520 plus cash. He agreed so I then decided I'd rather just order a DD lightweight upper from smartgunner.com than fiddle around with the 6520's upper and put it up on TOS and it has since sold.

Now, I like carbine length as it's all I'm used to but many of the midlength discussions here are very intriguing so I'm kicking around a midlength. My plans for a DD lightweight carbine upper would be a 14.5" with 12.0 Lite rail (I really want to try out the 12 o'clock flashlight position), pinned Battlecomp 1.5, DD BCG, CH, and rear sight. A midlength would be the same but if I'm right in my thinking the comparable rail for that doesn't allow for the 12 o'clock mounted light plus it's $25 more.

Finally, after all that, what would you do/have done? This is just a fun gun BTW.

-Upgraded the 6520 upper
-DD carbine upper
-DD midlength

Any opinions are appreciated.

Check out the Centurion Arms lightweight CHF barrels/uppers.

I have one of their middy CHF barrels sitting on my desk while I decide what to do with it. Also next to it is a Noveske Afghan barrel.

Middy is the way to go if you are debating a non-SBR AR. Lower recoil, less muzzle movement, easier on parts, ect.

I know...tought decision! I have two of them on my desk.

To the OP--the CA barrels aren't as thin/light as DD & BCM lightweights, but very close. They're only off by a few ounces, but IMHO a slighly better barrel and very campairable to Noveske specs let me see if I can find the chart that compairs them...

Those are quite the units but I should have clarified, I have to stay within the cost of what the DD units as described would cost and that may be pushing it a bit.

I do realize quality and budget don't play well together but I've got to color within the lines.

I would just do the DD Lite Weight and call it a day

Once I have the money saved up, this:

will have a centurion 14.5" middy barrel w/pinned BC 1.5, troy trx extreme 13.0, and DD fixed front sight. Other than a sr15e3 I can't really think of a better setup for my needs/wants.

I'm going with the BCM midlength 14.5" + Battlecomp with MOE handguards, paired with a Cav Arms lower.

Are you going with the LW uuper? That would be a super light and handy combo.

Indeed. Waiting for them to stock up. Those things sell out quickly.

Thinking about putting a Aimpoint T1 on it as well, but if the irons suffice I'll stick with them.

Sweet, you'll be very happy with that set up! I was trying to hold out for the BCM LW Middy, but didn't know when the next batch would be ready and couldn't pass up the sweet deal I got on the DD set up..plus having the BC pinned at no cost was a sweet selling point.

Where did you pick up that combo for that price? PM me if need be, thanks!
