Well, looks like Arsenal Inc. is finally going to offer one. I never thought I'd see the day.

Factory AKS-74's.....

The polymer side folders would be a clone of the AK-74M.

Explain.

Bear in mind that these aren't kit builds, these are imported into the US and then unbanned here. Putting a folding stock on an AK isn't just something you slap on, there's a fair amount of smithing that needs to be done by someone who knows what they hell they're doing, plus cost of materials.

Street price will probably be a grand, maybe $1100.00

The other SGL31 rifles on the K-Var website aren't kit guns either. With the omission of the folding stock, the other 5.45mm SGL31's are upwards of $300 cheaper.

So people will pay $300 more for a folding stock. I don't agree, but oh well.....

Check the cost of the parts, then shop around and see what most smiths who know what they're doing charge for that conversion. It's not something you just slap on there.

Templar - realizing that these are SGL series and not SLR series weapons; is it likely that we may see a mass produced 5.45 krink from K-var shortly?

Regardless, I will be buying one of the AK-74M's when available.

Buddy, honestly I have no idea.....I don't have a line into Arsenal Inc. like I used to when I worked for an Arsenal dealer.

It would be cool, that's or sure......they offered a limited edition of 28 AKSU-74's that went for $2K....so it might be a possibility.

What exactly is the difference between the SGL and SLR series? I've thought about getting an Arsenal rifle, but I don't have much experience with AKs.

Basically:

SGL= Russian made receivers
SLR= Bulgarian made receivers

I am sure Templar or one of the other AK gurus can provide further information.

Well now I know which AK I am getting and what my paycheck on 12/3 is buying!

The SLR series (SLR 101, 105, 106, and 107)are Arsenal Bulgaria rifles imported to the US and then unbanned here to use a pistol grip, stock, and standard magazine.

The SLR-105 was the first factory 5.45x39mm AK-74 imported into the US. It had a fixed stock.

The 106 is the 5.56mm version, and the 107 is the 7.62x39mm offering. Both have folding stock assemblies.

The SGL series are built in Russia by Izmash and is the premier offering in their line. Arsenal Inc. imports them, then unbans them here. The SGL-21 is 7.62x39mm and the SGL-31 is 5.45x39mm. These are fixed stock rifles.

Both the SLR and the SGL use cold hammer forged chrome lined barrels.

So, short answer....the SLR series are Bulgarian, the SGL series are Russian.

I have the SLR 105R and the SGL-31 and hands down the SLR Bulgarian rifle will outshoot the Russian one. I was so excited to get a "Russian AK74" and then when I shot it the old steady $550 SLR(back in 2005 dollars:D) outshoots the $700 Russian SGL gun with using 70 grain Wolf, 60 grain Barnaul Brown Bear and Silver Bear and new Hornady V-Max 60 grain. Straight across the board. The trigger is way better in the SLR gun as well. In my opinion you are better hunting down a slightly used SLR105 for a tad less money and you will have a better gun. Fit on the Bulgarian is a tad nicer, finish sucks on all of them and really need to be Duracoated, etc.

Some would argue that Bulgaria has made the finest Kalashnikov varients.

It does my heart good to FINALLY see Arsenal release an AKS-74/AK-74M varient. As an SLR-105 owner I'll have to pass as I just don't want to pony up that kind of money for a folder.

I'm still in the market for an 107CR to SBR so I'll have to sit this one out.

I was already looking at getting a SGL31 anyway so might as well get one of these instead. Glad that these are coming out before I purchased the 31, that would have been upsetting.

As far as SLR vs SGL, I'm pleased with both, have 2 SLR's and 1 SGL, would be nice to have a SGL with folder.

Same as already been mentioned , except the SGL's have until now with these 2 new models had non-folding stocks and the SLR have folding stocks.

SGL31 (Saiga) - Russian made stamped receiver, 5.45x39.5 caliber, hammer forged chrome lined barrel, front sight block with bayonet lug and 24x1.5 right-hand threads, muzzle brake, US made mil-spec black polymer stock set, standard mil-spec. handguards with stainless steel heat shield, US made double stage trigger group, 1000 meter rear sight leaf, scope rail, accessory lug. 10rd. Russian magazine included.

This Special Edition of SGL31 rifle is manufactured with authentic Russian current production polymer side-folding buttstock, available on a factory-made rifle for the first time in the United States.

I may not be reading something right but according to the Arsenal site there is a conflict as to wether or not these 100 series side folders are in fact Russian or their own US made copy that K-VAR has sold since '05-'06 and come on the 107F series. If they are Russian I would like to see the parts count for 922r verification.

Definitely worth the asking price to someone like me who paid $850 for an ORF sidefolding Bulgarian '74 with a side rail built on an Armory USA receiver back in '06.

Nice.

Every Arsenal AK I've purchased has the parts compliance listed in the manual.

ETA: Here's the link to the manual (http://www.arsenalinc.com/downloads/SGL31-94.pdf) and here's the parts compliance list.

Your SGL31 complies with section 922(r) of US code since it contains ten (10) or fewer foreign made parts, even when a foreign made magazine is installed. The foreign made parts used in your rifle are as follows...

1. Receiver
6. Gas Piston
2. Barrel
7. Magazine Body
3. Trunnion Block
8. Magazine Follower
4. Bolt
9. Magazine Floorplate
5. Bolt Carrier
10. Buttstock

Bulgarian or Russian.....to be brutally honest, I don't think it makes any difference, as both are top quality, and the Russians set up the Bulgarians to build the '74.

As far as the Yugo's, and the Bulgarian '74s that are available here in the US, it's going to really depend on who built them and what parts were used.

The reason I started this post is that this is the first time that FACTORY AKS-74's and AK-74M's have been available to US civilian shooters, vs. the rifles built using kits supplied from surplus rifles on US reverse engineered receivers.

When at all possible, try to get ahold of an AK that has the primary parts (barrel, receiver, bolt and carrier) made in a factory that manufactures them for military use (Russia, Bulgaria, etc.) vs. "kit" guns.
