I just can't get into hard liquor. I'm a beer guy all the way. Modelo in cans for consuming mass quantities (with a squirt of lime juice from one of those green lime-shaped bottles) and various micro-brews etc. for slow enjoyment with a good stogie.

Everyone says beer ruins a good cigar, but I guess I'm too much of a redneck to notice.

You get any New Belgium brews down there? They're located just north of here in Ft. Collins. Fat Tire ring a bell?

Even though I was born and raised in "bourbon country" I have come to prefer Irish whiskey and a small-batch Scottish gin called Hendrick's. Such things border on heresy in Kentucky. I guess I'm a weirdo: I don't like college basketball or horse-racing either. :D

I'm a beer snob, so I do my best to avoid mainstream mega-brewery American swill. Some micro-breweries I like (Bell's for instance) but I prefer the "classic" beers of the UK. My favorite is Fuller's ESB.

I quit smoking 10 years ago, and I was never much of a cigar lover even when I did smoke. Admittedly, I was probabaly never even in the same room as really top-notch cigar, so my experience was very limited.

Hey Nick,

New Belgium is good, but I really like O'Dell's offerings. Their 90 Shilling and Easy Street Wheat are some of my favorites. I also really like Breckenridge's Vanilla Porter and Oatmeal Stout. Big Sky's Moose Drool and Scape Goat are great too.

I like O'Dell's MUCH better, too, but there isn't a chance in hell he gets that stuff in Florida. Anyone care to work out some sort of micro brew exchange on here? If we could find a way to ship this stuff, I'd love to try some of the local stuff from across the country...

I had some beer a few weeks ago from a Company called Dogfish Head or something like that. They make a "90 minute" that turned out to be 9% alcohol and set me right on my ass. Now I know why it only comes in a 4 pack!

From now on I'll buy the "60 minute" which is evidently a more traditional alcohol content.

We bought this beer one time when I was in college called "Fin du Monde" or something to that effect. At the time we weren't drinking anything without "dieseling" (pouring in a shot or two of whiskey) it. We never made it out of the house. The next morning we awoke to major hangovers and a generally shitty disposition.

Turns out "fin du monde" means "the end of the world" in French, and them cajun bastards did a number on us with their 9% alcohol and our double-shots of whiskey added to it.

Really? You can't get it at liquor stores? Strange...

We're really lucky here - I'm about 30 minutes from the largest liquor/wine store in the country (Applejack). It's like walking into a Walmart full of booze. You can get anything from malt liquor to $1500 bottles of wine, Scotch, and $4000 bottles of Cognac (Hennessey Timeless). I'm personally a bit of a wine snob. Their French selection is lacking, but California, Oregon, and Washington are stocked to the brim. The help around there is about equal to Walmart, so it's best if you go in knowing what you want.

I've only ever seen Fat Tire for sale by the six pack once, and that was at some organic grocery store out by some million dollar houses. I don't remember exactly how much it cost there, but I think it was still $10+ for a six pack. Never seen it in any liquor store here.

This is funny, I'm holding one of the three remaining LA FIN DU MONDE out of a six pack I got months ago. I drink plenty of beer and many different kinds from all over the world. I can even drink Steel Reserve 8.1% on occasion. But after three of these things I felt like the guy in Hannibal who had the top of his head cut off and eating his own brain my head hurt so bad. If you want to get drunk on 1 beer, donate blood then hit a bar on the way home.

On the list of favorite adult beverages, hmm tough one. I have a list of ones that I avoid at all costs, but a favorite? Good Irish whisky, heck even semi-cheap Irish whiskey ranks high. As for a beer like liquid, I will have to punt and say Guiness. On tap and poured right, not that funky bottled stuff.

Woodford Reserve Bourbon

http://us.st11.yimg.com/us.st.yimg.com/I/randalls_1961_39531623

I'll offer a third recommendation for Woodford Reserve Bourbon Whiskey.

Richard Zacks, historian and author of The Pirate Coast and The Pirate Hunter has made some interesting notes on the life of Lt. Presley O'Bannon. Upon returning to civilian life following his exploits along the Barbary Coast, O'Bannon helped his brother-in-law Elijah Pepper start the Old Pepper Distillery near Lexington, KY. The Old Pepper distillery is the now property of Labrot and Graham, distillers of the precious Woodford Reserve. This distillery lineage is also corroborated on Wikipedia.com (open source).

Sadly, that is illegal. Alkyhurl can't cross state lines person to person through a shipper. When you buy alky online, it gets shipped from a distributor within the state that you reside in. Love that Interstate Commerce clause, eh?

I can't bring myself to drink Guinness. Its everybody's alleged favorite, although I suspect every younger person that says that of lying. Most haven't built up the tolerance to it yet. :D

I'm not big on likker, although I have been enjoying a single malt that a friend gave me from the Isle of Mull: Tobermory 10 YO. Since its the only whisky that's made on that Isle, it has a unique flavor that is unlike others I've tried.

As for beers, which I like more than liquor, I'm most partial to Bass Ale, and also enjoy an ice cold Newcastle Brown Ale, Celebretor, and Xingu. If you're ever in Vegas, stop by The Freakin' Frog. They have an inventory of about 800 beers.

JoseyWales- Excellent choice of cigars. Ashton is simply the most consistently well made cigar on the market, I believe. And I mean all of thier lines. I smoke Ashtons easily 95% of the time I smoke cigars.

Don't let folks fool you about Cubans anymore. It is a fact that 95% of all Cubans that Americans obtain are fake. There are even fake Cuban cigars sold in Cuba. The only way you will ever truly know for sure is to purchase them yourself at a Casa del Habano. Also, cigars from the DR, Honduras, etc have equaled or surpassed the quality of Cubans,

I'd say the finer things in life involve waking up with my gorgeous, sweet-smelling, loving wife of 19.5 years and the sound of our two teenaged daughters shuffling around getting breakfast. At least, that's whats going on here, right now.

But living in the Germany, in the Oberpfalz region of Bavaria, I gotta say beer is a pretty good second place. My current favorite is a mellow dark beer known as "Kupfer Spezial" from Winklerbraeu in Lengenfeld.

I'm a HUGE fan of cigars from Drew Estate and Partagas. They are excellent with a glass of bourbon such as Woodford Reserve or Basil Haydens. I'd have to go with Basil Haydens has my hands down favorite with Woodford Reserve closely following. When it comes to beer I like everything from Coors Light to Chimay. I enjoy microbrews too and the Dortmunder Gold from Great Lakes Brewing is some of the best I have ever had, period. Anything from Mad Anthony Brewing in Indiana is also excellent as well.

From now on I'll buy the "60 minute" which is evidently a more traditional alcohol content.

Rob, I distribute those beers and many more like it, if you like the higher percentage alc. Give Sam Adams imperial pillsner a try! Very hoppy and robust.

Hard liquor wise gentlemen, Glenlivet or Chivas, Craft beers all the way anytime anywhere Very fond of Belgium white ale

Dogfish Head Ale makes an awesome mead called King Midas Touch. I'm not a fan of beer but I found two restaurants that carried it and I'd bring home a six pack whenever I'd visit. Great stuff.

I also have a sneaking like of Chambord and Cointreau as well as a various Merlots and Reislings.

A really good beer like this one (http://www.alaskanbeer.com/porter.html). Black Butte Porter (http://www.deschutesbrewery.com/brews/year-round-brews/black-butte-porter/default.aspx) and Obsidian Stout (http://www.deschutesbrewery.com/brews/year-round-brews/obsidian-stout/default.aspx) are a couple of others I also enjoy regularly when at home. Besides a good beer I also like my wife's pork riblets and rice with black bean sauce and spending time with my sons.

Basil Hayden's was my number 1 squeeze for a while- great sippin bourbon.

Knob Creek was a bakup- could get a half gallon for $55 and keep it in the cupboard for when i ran out of Basil.

If i was feeling really special, I'd pop open a bottle of Bookers- couldn't usually drink more than 1 or two, but damn fine tasting whisky.

always from a 3-ounce cordial, neat, room temp.

I was also partial to 1800 Anejo- which, for some reason, doesn't seem to be a real popular tequila. i loved it- $45 a bottle, and was better, in my opinion, than don pedro, petron, etc.

no drinky these days, though... not sure when it happened, but somewhere along the line i realized i didn't like being crippled at any time. if i were to get drunk or even "buzzed" these days, i'd probably just be tapping my foot until i could think clearly again.

Best drink I ever had was... well, something from a bottle some old guy gave us, there was something of a communications gap, but he seemed really happy to see us, and it looks like that bottle had been waiting for something special... I am sure, that it was a congac and quite old.

The best meal I ever had was Sloppy Joes, French Fries and Stewed Tomatoes catered from an MKT :D

Cool Thread.

*The precious time I get to spend with my fiance, but in particular our Sunday hikes where we both turn the cell phones off, and rain or shine bust our butts!
*Family! I love them, and we're all spread out, the time we get is precious.
*A hand rolled smoke that is not to wet and not to dry, rolled by me, and me only...:D
*A good scotch, smokey and aged well.
*Traveling to all the amazing countries I have had the opportunity to go to, and experience (not watching from the outside) other cultures.

One of the better things I have had is a beef tataki at a local sushi place called "Ichiban Sushi" (Salt Lake City). The beef tataki is seared and served in a soy sauce / thai sauce mix and melts in your mouth. I cannot describe it. (Tataki is kind of an almost sushi but beef and not fish -- kind of seared and then rare inside)

A good European dark or milk chocolate. Lindt is OK, as are the belgians.

A well prepared excellent cut of beef steak.

A good NY style cheesecake.

Playing with my kids. (son 6 and daughter about 1 1/2)

Teaching my son about "man" things (he is 6 and wants to shoot, fish, hunt, fly model planes, launch rockets, etc -- every day all day -- though we are taking it more slowly than he would like).

Taking your kids to Disney when they are young.

Lightly grilled Copper River wild sockeye

a bottle of Mumm Cramant

a first class ticket to a week long vacation on the west coast of Ireland

... are all things that'd be on my short list of the finer things right now.

For the bourbon fanciers, I would like to suggest '1792' which is my current pick. Former top choices were Jack Daniels Single Barrel & Woodford Reserve.

i wouldn't be a proper former bourbon snob if i didn't point out that jack daniels is NOT actualy bourbon.. it's tennessee straight whisky. JD's charcoal filtering process alone is enough to disqualify it as bourbon, without even looking at the mash ratios.
