Defensive Concepts North Carolina Basic Carbine (VSM)

On 6 Nov Defensive Concepts North Carolina (DCNC) taught it's Basic Carbine (VSM) course in Carthage, NC. The weather was chilly for most of the day with misting rain occuring at different times during the day.

The course began with introductions, discussion of safety, and the outlining of the established medical plan. The medical plan. For this course there were 5 students and 2 instructors. Experience levels ranged from new shooters to experienced active duty military.

The course began with talk of zeroing the carbine. The 100 yard zero is what DCNC advocates for most users and this was discussed along with other zeros. The concept of a "working" zero was covered and students were informed that they needed to return to their home ranges and get a solid, refined zero for their individual carbines. The zeroing process lead to a discussion on prone shooting and elements that lead to accurate shooting from there.

Once zeros were established the class moved on to topics such as universal fighting stance, hand positioning on the carbine, low ready, and proper targeting areas.

After students felt comfortable with these topics the class broached the subject of emergency reloads. Students were shown how to conduct the emergency reload and the various methods of sending the bolt forward. After students had rep'ed each method multiple times; they tried each method for time in order to see which was fastest for them.

Three kneeling positions were discussed, demo'ed, and practiced before moving on to malfunction clearance.

The day ended with the students getting a taste of shooting on the move.

All shooters in the class used ARs of varying builds to include one DPMS gun. The only malfunctions of the course cane from the DPMS gun and was the result of no lubricant being on the gun. This issue was resolved by a quick class on proper lubrication and the gun ran fine for the rest of the day.

Targets used for the day included the stadard IPSC everyone knows and the new Vickers Tactical VSM target.
