What's your take? Looking for peoples' opinions on the best fighting pistol, SHTF back up gun, gun you carry to war. Looking for less Concealed carry options, more of a kit war gun

In what caliber do you like it best?

Glock 19, night sights, surefire x300. I'd like to try a ct laser grip (heard they change grip angle on the glock too much), and a trij rmr.

"Deagle," obviously. I'm talkin' .50 AE, too.

Glock 17...I know how to take em apart, parts are cheap, and easy to find. Plus they are a proven handgun around the world.

Pretty subjective question, I think the best answer is:

Whatever you happen to be carrying at the time that is reliable, accurate, loaded, and youre comfortable with.

Exactly. For me it would be a 9mm Glock.

If it fits your hand and you were comfortable with it, it would be very hard to beat a G17 when it comes to cost, reliability, parts availability, ease of maintenance/modification, and durability. They may not be for everyone but it's hard to deny that they're cheap to own and operate, highly reliable, and you can buy every part of the pistol to make up an emergency spares kit. My personal favorite is the G19 but if you aren't thinking about CCW then I would seriously consider the larger, higher capacity G17 family.

Lethal dose, I have CT 619's on my G19's and didn't have any problems with grip angle. They do make it a little fatter of course but it didn't take any time or adjustment in technique at all for me. I'll never be without them again, for me they are a must have.

I really don't think it makes much of a difference as long as it is a reliable pistol and that you have the training to be effective with it. In the last 100 years of warfare pistols just simply haven't played a decisive part in any war. Are they important for the defense of individual soldiers absolutely, but they aren't a decisive weapon in overall combat. I would be very surprised if pistols inflicted even 1% of the casualities on any modern battlefield. In the vast majority of infantry fights your indirect fire and machine guns are going to inflict the vast majority of casualities.

Back to the orginal question. Although my personal pick would probably be a M&P 9, I would feel equally well served with any of the following: Glock, M&P, HK, Sig, Beretta, CZ, Walther, Browning HP, a GI M1911 or properly set up 1911, etc...

I actually think it is more important than type is to have a pistol that is in a readily available caliber such as 9mm, .40, or .45.

I own and have carried many different pistols and calibers and I would hands down pick a Glock 19 or Glock 17 for the criteria you specified.

I like the M&P 9, because of the lack of friction in the action.

This should help reliability.

It also apparently is one of the only guns that will cycle properly even if "limp wristed".

It's made by a US company.

If you're going to war then the pistol you'll carry is probably issued equipment and you don't have the freedom to pick something else.

If you're looking to purchase a handgun with the primary intent of using it as a defensive tool, there is a tacked thread at the top of this forum that includes within it a lot of links to previous discussions that are full of helpful information.
