I've got a build coming with a dd upper and dd 12.0 lite rail with a 14.5" barrel and am trying to get an idea of cases that might work, before the rifle arrives.

anyone have the length of their upper with barrel and rail together? I don't have anything to compare it against as its my first build.

I photoshopped something together to give an idea of what I'm contemplating. Something that's a little easier to throw in the trunk on the way to the range and wont stick out as a long gun case.

doesn't necessarily have to fit the s&w, but would be nice to transport together.

Anyone done anything similar and like to show their config? I'm hoping there is a case with dimensions that would fit what I'm looking for perfectly, to keep it small but still able to fit my needs.

Damn, for a second I thought you had found the case I've been looking for!

This one looks sweet. Should be out next month. Comes in different sizes, and even non tactical colors also. I am sure you could configure each side to addressee your wants.

I'm sure Pelican makes a case with foam inserts you can have cut out that is about that size.

I made an estimate in photoshop about sizes (dont have the rifle in person yet to stick a measure tape to)

and came up with... for a 14.5" rifle split into upper and lower I'd need about a 26"x18" case. this seems to be close to the pelican 1650 or im2950, though thats a bit deeper than I need it would seem to work for a hard case.

part of asking the question was to see if anyone could give me a rough measurement on upper assembly on a 14.5" dd build, or to see what others have as transport options for a 14.5" build.

10.5's and 11.5's fit in some pretty nice tiny cases, but anything longer seems to end up in a longer rifle case, and I was checking to see if anyone else is trying to fit a 14.5 into a nice compact solution.

Look into the Covert Case from LaRue Tactical. It holds the upper and lower separate. It is on my wish list for Christmas. I believe they are made by Tactical Tailor.

I just moved into an apartment, so being discreet moved up a couple of levels of importance. I have been using a gym bag with great success. I use a change of clothes to pad everything. This does not work well for air travel. I like the idea in the first picture.

The interior dimensions of the Pelican 1650 are 28.57" x 17.52" x 10.65". weight is 28 pounds w/ foam and 24 lbs w/o.

My 16" upper length is 25.5" and your 14.5" (assuming non NFA) will be 24.1". Gauging by the configuration in the picture the ideal width is about 17-18." You don't need any more than 4" depth, and this is where you need to weigh your options. you could have one layer of foam cutout for your guns and magazines, but you still have over 2/3 of the available volume to fill with other gear or more foam. You are already at 24 pounds empty. Depending on how much you fly (or if you plan to fly at all) you may only be allowed 50 pounds. I am allowed 70 per item (up to 3 items) I don't recommend the pick and pluck foam. it falls apart under real world use. Don't half ass your foam.

Good luck!

yeah if the pelican were 5" deep instead of 10" it would be a lot closer to what I'm looking for.

and thanks ,I know to avoid the foam cubes. We had a few at work for transporting camera equipt, and they just turn into a ball of shit after 2 config's or so. End up not getting used.

I use the Pelican 1700 (http://www.pelican1700case.com/?gclid=CKC5wtGUuKUCFUS8KgoddS0sZQ) hard-shell case. It's very durable and is also TSA approved. You shouldn't have any trouble fitting both of your rifles in it, as I can easily fit both of my fixed-stock AK's in mine. According to the link they also have a lot more customizing options available now, which is a plus.

ETA: The bottom portion of the 1700 is a little over 3.5", with the lid included it comes to around 5.5". Those are my approximate numbers from measuring my own 1700 with a nearby ruler, they should have the actual dimensions on the page I linked to above.

Any update on this idea? I'm very interested in the same thing, but have to make it work for my 16" upper.

If you don't mind a soft-side discreet weapon case, the Edmom MM TNT Gym Bag (http://www.skdtac.com/Emdom_MM_TNT_Gym_Bag_p/e2m.500.htm) and Cavarms Discreet Rifle Bag (http://www.cavalrymanufacturing.com/DRB.html) might be good options.

If you aren't limited to a hard sided case, the LaRue Covert Case is amazing.

I've been wondering about the same thing myself. I have a 1720 for travel which is perfect, but I was thinking about a Pelican 1700. Anybody think or know if two broken down 14.5" or 16" ARs would fit? I know I probably won't have room for much more (mags, parts, etc.).

Thanks!

For those of you with a 16" upper, wondering if the 1600 pelican will work: https://www.m4carbine.net/showthread.php?p=924612#post924612

Summary: maybe... it fits, but barely.

I recently picked up a SO Tech Go Bad, Extended with insert! Unfortunately my rifle did not fit the way I had intended it to but for a 14.5" it might be the ticket! Im kinda still looking though!

Grunt Out!
