Dan uses a Blade-Tech kydex belt holster and I use a Safariland 561, the 560/561 for a Glock 17/22/20/21 fits the M&P very well. (the 560 is the paddle).

No we don't have Warren M&P sight in stock yet (Scott W didn't have them available yet). If you come to the Fredericksburg USPSA match tomorrow I'm pretty sure Scott Warren will be there and may have some for sale. I just bought a set of Warren sights for my wifes M&P on Sunday last week at Blackwater.

Just picked mine up. Will be getting acquainted this weekend, taking pics, hopefully a range trip, etc. Shall report back with impressions.

I expect I'll at least want to replace the rear sight at some point (three-dots get me confused). Any recommendations appreciated. Would need something user-installable (no special pusher or anything needed).

Will of course need a good holster too.:D

ETA: Oh yeah, I also got the form for the rebate for $50 and two free mags. This seems like a surprisingly good deal.

So I have to ask- those of you with 45s, did you want or consider the safety version?

Would anyone want the safety version?

Is the 45 the same size as the full size 9mm?

Sorry but tonight I'm on a real serious M&P kick...

Hawkeye

So I have to ask- those of you with 45s, did you want or consider the safety version?

No. Switched from 1911's to Glocks a few years ago, and was used to running without a manula safety. Wanted to keep things the same when I went to M&P's.

Would anyone want the safety version?
For someone who is used to running a 1911, or wants to run an M&P in addition to a 1911, then the thumb safety keeps the methods of operation prett ymuch the same between the two.

Is the 45 the same size as the full size 9mm?

Sorry but tonight I'm on a real serious M&P kick...

No. The 45 is a bit larger frame wise, and has a slightly longer slide/barrel.

SuicideHz
11-18-07, 11:44
Still smaller than a 1911 in length and grip height though?

Hawkeye
11-18-07, 12:18
Almost identical to a standard fullsize 1911 all the way around. As I understand it, S&W did this on purpose, and wisely so.

Just picked mine up. Will be getting acquainted this weekend, taking pics, hopefully a range trip, etc. Shall report back with impressions......

Well, I must say, I am......just amazed, really.

Took along the G19 and shot it actually first. Several rounds at an IDPA target, double-taps, etc......OK, yeah -- I know what that's like.

Then shot the M&P, and what a difference ! ! !

I had always just accepted that the G19 was a little snappy. After all, it's a lightweight plastic gun, and at least this particular model in 9mm is less severe than the .40 or .45 models.

But the M&P was actually smooth to the point of being nearly effortless. I don't think I've handled a gun with this kind of feel since my Beretta VERTEC, a much bulkier and heavier design. The difference of the M&P from the G19 reminded me of when you get a brand-new set of really good radial tires on your vehicle.

And I'm really not sure what accounts for such a big difference. Size is no more than 5% greater than the G19, and weight no more than 7%. Can only figure that the superior fit to the hand transfers the force of the shot a lot more efficiently.

Regarding the latter topic, I've got some pics coming that I'll post in a separate thread, hopefully tomorrow.

In the meantime, consider me officially "IN". :D

I just put the first 250 down the pipe of my M&P9 yesterday, and I completely agree with your assessment. If I had to use one word to describe the feel of the gun it would be smooth.

well i went and bought myself a christmas toy. I needed a 45 so i went out and bought a m&p 45. she looks nice beside the 40 in the safe. I think i have a problem.

I hope not.

But, look closely at your case and you will see the foam is scored for much longer mags.

This is unfortunate...

nickdrak
12-07-07, 05:11
From everything that has been put out there on the high(er) capacity M&P45 magazines, They are gonna hold between 12-14 rounds, and it appears that they will indeed be basically an extended mag that extends further fron the bottom of the grip. There is no other way to achieve the higher capacity for the M&P45. You cant jam more rounds into the mags, hell you can barely fit 10 in 'em now.

M4arc
12-07-07, 05:13
This sounds like a discussion that should have it's own thread.

usaffarmer
12-07-07, 22:26
Im not real fond of the mag extending beyond the gun. I guess 10 will do.

when they extend below the frame they look like a squirt gun.

SuicideHz
12-07-07, 22:32
I am just fine with 10. If I wanted a ton of rounds I would have gotten an H&K with a jet funnel but I sure as heck didn't.

Look at our pretty M&Ps with 10 versus a 1911 with a 10 round CMC mag!

We lucked out and still have more options.

Pay close attention to your case- there's more foam that can be removed in the mag spots. I may have already said there here... Don't mind me. I have AADD.

usaffarmer
12-09-07, 02:27
im happy with 10 if i need more I guess thats why we carry more mags. or carry the m&p 40 thats hold 15+1. I just really wanted another 45 and the m&p fit the bill as far as tuppaware that fit my hand.

Matt,

Roger that, I've got (2) S&W M&P 9mm's in bound. Ordered them a couple months ago, just waiting for Grant to get them in.

I'm switching my duty and SWAT guns over from Glock 9mm's over to M&P's 9mm for a year.

I'll use the M&P 9mm's at work, monthly matches, summer weekly steel matches, training classes with Pat Rogers and Larry Vickers, training at work, daily carry, recreational shooting, etc. for a full year and then make a decission as to weather the Glock or S&W M&P platform is better for me.

I'm also switching my duty carbine over to a 16" mid-length with no vertical foregrip for a year to see how that platform works for me.

I'm stuck with Glocks, but I can tell you the M&P45 has pulled me away strongly from my love of the 1911 platform.

I see a lot more $500 M&Ps in my future than I do $2500 1911s...

The service model is pulling double duty for comp and carry, hopefully the M&PL will come out soon. Round count on the 4" is about 1500 trouble free rounds.

I just put about 500 rounds through my M&P 45 and about 400 through my M&P 9C.

Both performed very well. The 9C had a failure to extract on the second magazine, but that was it.

The M&P .45 is the best shooting non-1911 .45 handgun I have ever tried. I even managed to run into a local LEO at the range and I let him run my family of M&Ps and now he's got wood for them too....

I bought my MP9f back in May 2007 and have been REALLY pleased with it. It has become my 'go-to' pistol for carry, classes, and competition. Everything is stock including plain day sights.

Some carry wear as you can see near the front of the slide.

I'll probably pick up some BTC Ameriglo sights for it, but other than that I like it just the way it is.

Nice Todd. Didn't know the blue training guns were out yet.
Those crimson trace grips are nice, sadly they cost close to what I paid for my entire pistol. My MP9 FS was $399 new. Those grips are about $300 right?

Is one of those the new gun Smith sent you to abuse?

ToddG
04-22-08, 22:46
I think you can find the CTC's for just a little over $200 if you search online. I agree, they're expensive compared to the price of the gun. You could pay full retail for your next M&P, then the grips would seem less expensive. I'm pretty sure CTC was putting their grips on the blue guns as soon as Ring's started delivering M&P blue guns.

The gun at the top, the one not in a holster, is the new one. Shot it today to get the test started, 265 rounds without a problem. Just 49,735 to go!

JM -- It's the only duty/retention holster I have and the only light-mountable holster I have, so I used it for the low light portion of Rogers.

Hey guys I have a bit of a novice question about the M&P platform. Are these as easy to take apart like the Glocks? I had a armorer at the range teach me to take a apart my glock and put it back together in a matter of minutes when I had a 3.5 connector installed. I am quite intrigued by this new line and the price is just right.

Docu-dramas first became popular in the 80's, and featured the then novel format of having narrated traditional documentary segments interspersed with dramatized reinacted scenes.

For the subject at-hand, we could have our big buddy going to local retail outlet to make the purchase, then driving to the range for the first test shoot (with a pit-stop along the way to sample some of the local culture), etc.

Well established female celebrities seem to be a current trend as narrators, so in this case someone like Susan Sarandon would seem appropriate (I'm sure ol' Sue would be eager to lend her voice).

A more difficult issue though, what current Hollywood Hunk would be worthy to portray our wookie-esque subject?

My new M&P9L.
It's my new Production gun for USPSA. S&W hasn't signed off on the official numbers of the guns they've made so it's not legal yet per USPSA rules for Production/Limited or Limited-10 so I shot it in Open minor at Sundays match and placed 12th in Open, 21st overall (112 shooters).

Tips: The Warren sights currently available for the standard M&P9 full size (non-5") have the front sight at .160" which is too short. The 5" factory sight is a .180". So at 25yds using 115gr American Eagle my gun shoots about 8" too high. The 147gr subsonic Atlanta Arms minor ammo hits even higher. So Speed Shooters Specialties is making me a .195" tall serrated .115" wide non-fiber front sight per Ernest Langdons recommendation to me yesterday. Also I'll have to go to a lighter recoil spring as the 147gr subsonic is barely ejecting, it feels light shooting a Stinger in my Ruger 22/45, the sights just barely lift!

Hmm. I was thinking of doing a Warren rear for the 9L or 9Pro. I had to switch the front sight on my standard M&P 9 to a .180" because I was shooting high. I wonder if I'll need some crazy high sight then for a 9L or 9Pro.

You'll very likely need a taller then the .180" height front for the M&P9L and Pro since you're already using a .180" on a standard M&P9.

I just ordered a .115" wide x .195" tall front plain black serrated front from Ken at Speed Shooter Specialties (www.speedshooterspecialties.com), for custom made sights plain black is $35 and $58 for a fiber. If the .195" makes me happy then I'll order a fiber one to replace it. I'm hoping he gets it done quickly because I want to use my M&P9L for the Carolina Tactical Invitational (CTI 3gun) match at the end of this month.

We have only had it out to the range once. It suffered several classic stovepipe failures to eject while my wife was shooting it and one failure to feed (double feed) while I was shooting it. I hope that the FTE were due to her "limp wristing" the gun but I have a bad feeling that the weapon will be going back to Smith & Wesson for some tuning if the problem persists.

I'm going to detail strip and clean it soon and properly lube the extractor channel to see if that remedies the problems. There are a lot of threads on the MP-Pistols forum that show other people having these problems with their M&Ps lately as well. Some have fixed it themselves with the prescription outlined above. Others had to return their weapons for service.

It wouldn't be the first time I've had to return a new M&P to Smith.

The 9L balances very well and the extended slide and barrel add just enough heft to the front-end to make it a really smooth shooter. No complaints from me here.

The gun really needs better sights so I'll be ordering a fiber optic front and a 10-8 Performance rear sight soon. I really like Hilton Yam's 10-8 sight and consider it an almost essential upgrade to any M&P automatic. Not so much a fan of the Warren Tactical sights but mainly because I prefer the rear sight ramp to be cut aggressively enough to allow you to hook it against your belt, holster, a hard surface, etc. and rack the slide one handed if you're wounded. The Warren sight allows it, but it doesn't have the hook that the 10-8 sight does.

The trigger on this particular M&P is really mushy. The reset is barely perceptible and absolutely nothing like the firm, definitive click of my Glock 19. I really wish it had a more pronounced, shorter reset. I found myself short-stroking the trigger on more than one occasion during our range session. I may replace the sear with the new S&W Performance Center sear and see if that helps any. I'm told it is basically a drop-in version of what Dan Burwell and other gunsmiths do as trigger jobs for these guns, albeit in a somewhat mass produced form. Odds are that this weapon will never see any sort of carry duty and just be a range toy / gamer gun, so I have no issues with modifying the trigger.

All in all, I'm pretty happy with the gun. I just need to resolve the FTE / FTF problems and replace the sights. Then it will be good to go.

Still not sold on the M&P as a carry gun based on my personal experiences, but there are hundreds of folks out there who do carry them and have never had these sort of problems.

The extractor channel doesn't require lubrication nor removing the extractor.

M&Ps sometimes have rough chambers when brand new. I believe it's the finish that's applied to them. I polish out the chambers on my M&Ps with a worn buffing wheel and Flitz or Semi-Chrome and polish the feed ramp. It won't remove metal but it'll remove the rough surface area and make extraction/feeding easier.

Stove piping is typically caused by not having a good grip/stance which allows the gun to move before the slide has cycled completely and/or weak ammo. Even with a stock recoil spring my M&P9L doesn't stove pipe with 147gr subsonic ammo but the casings just trickle out of the gun. I'm now running a 15lb ISMI M&P recoil spring on the factory guide rod in it which sped up the slide velocity a little for this custom load. It works well with 115gr FMJ with this recoil spring as well.

The .195" tall - .115" wide serrated front sight that Kenny at Speed Shooter Specialties (www.speedshooterspecialties) made for me worked perfectly.

Last night I shot my M&P9L tonight with the new SSS front sight with 115gr FMJ American Eagle and 147gr JHP Atlanta Arms Ammo. With the 147gr it hit about 1" high at 15yds, 115gr FMJ AE it hit about 1" low at 15yds. 115gr was poa/poi at 25yds, 147gr was about 1/2" high.

Negative. But your assumption why is probably right. Those are the floorplates that are for the M&P9C (the flat ones). S&W part number #27835

Not Tim but the most noticeable thing to me is that the HK 45 has more muzzle flip probably due it's higher bore axis and lack of beavertail. You get used to it quickly though. As much as I like the HK 45 the mid sized M&P .45 is quickly gaining ground over it.

Tim,

Now you know you owe it to us to do the big docudrama on the H&K45 compared to the M&P45...

Yep! :p

Why are you using floorplates from the Compact?

The compacts base is much smaller and much easier to hold on to for quick fumble free reloads AND you don't accidentally grabbing the second mag and drop it on the ground while grabbing the mag in front of it. For Production I wear 5 mags which are spaced pretty close together on my support side. The Compact bases cost less than $1 each.

Top to bottom:

M&P9 mag with Arrendondo +5 (22 round capacity)
M&P9 mag (stock)
M&P9 mag with Compact flat base.

ToddG
07-13-08, 08:53
By the end of the month, all of my mags will have either the Arredondo extended base (with ISMI spring) or the Compact floorplate.

The difference isn't huge, but it's a cheap and simple improvement.

Robb Jensen
07-13-08, 09:12
I got three of the Arrendondo extensions mostly for the 'outlaw' 3gun matches where there's no mag capacity limits nor major/minor power factor limits. The CTI match I'm shooting at the end of the month in NC is like that. I'll also use the extensions for shooting Open minor in USPSA until my M&P9L is legal in Production.

That has happened to me more than a few times in my recent matches. I was going to get a new mag holder setup to try and fix it, but this is a good solution too. And no cutting.

Shot my new 9 Pro yesterday. 3 inches high at 25 yards. I'm a little bummed.

Just get Kenny at Speed Shooters Specialties to make you a .195" tall x .110" or .115" wide fiber front sight. He's very quick and they're $58. The Warren front is .115" wide, I don't know what width the Pro has.

I have been completely pleased with the Tucker "The Answer" IWB holster. I have been carrying a M&P40 (full-size), and a M&P45 (full-size) in it over the past year I have had it. The only issue in my opinion is the wait time (approx. 12 weeks minimum) & the price. (about $130.00 delivered).

Gladly.

It is called the "Glock Tail" and is designed for those individuals who suffer from Glock slide bite. I have large hands and when I take a business-like grip on a stock Glock the slide cuts into the web of my hands as it cycles. After about 100 rounds I've got noticeable grooves cut into my hand. After about 150 I start bleeding. More rounds than that and I start getting into needing-stitches territory.

The best solution to that problem is to have someone like Robar or Bowie Tactical do grip work on the Glock including fabricating a beavertail on the weapon. The Glock Tail is simply a piece of plastic that gives roughly the same effect without permanent modification of the weapon. Mine is being held on simply by the rubber band you see on the grip of the weapon. (It comes with the Glock Tail when you buy it) You simply trim the Glock Tail (if you wish to...) and then stick it on the weapon.

I did a more in-depth explanation of the Glock Tail here:

http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=1&f=5&t=712902

It does indeed change the feel of the weapon and pushes your hand a bit lower and a bit farther back. These are not problems for me, but people who already struggle with the Glock's grip size will want to skip the Glock Tail.

It's not as good as a good grip job by a competent professional, but it works. Just be prepared to have LAV make fun of you when you show up in one of his classes with a Glock-Tail you trimmed with a utility knife. "Dude...I thought your Glock got chewed up by a badger or something..."

There difference in felt recoil is due to the M&P's internal metal chasis. It adds rigidity to the polymer frame. Most people who fire the full size M&P are surprised by the recoil.
------

Shooting Winchester's Ranger T 127gr +p+ in the Glock 19 is no fun. However, running it through the M&P, it was like the gun was asking me " is that all you got? ".

Just finished a home stippling job. feels 10x more "grippy" if that is the right word. just practiced with a spare backstrap and went from there!

I'm really impressed by the home stippling jobs. They look very professional. I must say though that you guys must have damn tough hands for that aggressive of stippling under the trigger guard. :)

I went the exact opposite direction for under the trigger. I sanded off every bit of it, including the the mold slot that formed a trench. After hours of dry firing and range time it was annoying to say the least, and even tore me up a few times during extended sessions. Mine is now completely smooth down to were it transitions to the front strap. It looks good and feels a lot better.

and my 'shoot the crap out of' M&P Pro IDPA gun...

I have shot and classified with both in IDPA, but mostly I just shoot the Pro and not have to worry about cleaning it but every few hundred rounds...

Very nice. Did you have the slide refinish, or is it just stripped down to the stainless?

Here's mine, this is the way it's been for about a year now. Warren single trit yellow rear, ameriglo green front. Ben from Boresight solutions did the stippling. I plan to put a performance center sear in it, get Burwell to do the teflon/nickel on the slide like nickdrak's 45, and maybe install a Stormlake extended threaded barrel. I traded my X300, and regretted it the moment it left. Plan to get another one once my tax return comes in :D

Todd do you have a hi-res of that picture?

I have a hi-res (3504x2336) original, but it hasn't been edited so it's a little dark and there are dust bunnies everywhere. Do you need it for something in particular?
