View Full Version : Loose KAC Rail Panels - Any Fixes?

I picked up some used KAC rail covers that I'd like to give a chance, but they are pretty loose and the whole panel slides back and forth along the length of the rail a bit more than I would like. I have no previous experience with them so I don't know if that's just how they are, or if these particular ones are just worn out. It appears that the metal clip is able to rock back and forth quite a bit keeping the panel from locking down tight. Have any of you that have used them experienced this or have any clever ways of tightening them up? This is on a LaRue 12" rail, just FYI.

I was told to add silicone to the inside of the panel but I've never tried it.. I've also seen people drilling an hole and keeping the panel in place with an hex screw using the threated hole on some rails...

They all do that, for the most part. I'm not aware of any fixes though, as it dosen't bother me. You could try bending the metal clips in more so they fit tighter against the rail. I'm sure someone here has thought of something before.

Most rails have sections machined in the very front and very rear of the rail so that the metal clip on the kac covers "clips" in.

Sounds like you have a rail that does not have these areas on the rails. You can always put the kac cover where you want it and then take a ladder cover section and put one in front and in the rear to block movement.

I needed to be able to turn one of my 6 rib panels around on my RAS and wanted it to lock with the clip in the middle of the rail. I got out the flat bastard file and notched one side of the slot that I needed and it locks in nicely.

*ETA: I see you're using these on a LaRue rail. Mine's a RAS and they're a dime a dozen now so I didn't care if it's messed up a bit, if it was a LaRue I might think differently unless function beats aesthetics for your uses.

Sell them a buy XTMs? I really like most KAC products but those rail panels are 90's type of stuff.

That's kind of the direction I'm leaning. I actually already have most of the rail's unused area covered with XTMs, I just don't like the feel of them on my bare hand when I'm not shooting with gloves on. So far, I like the texture of the Tango Down panels the best, but they are not as low-profile as the XTMs and KAC panels are. I picked up some TD SCAR panels a while back thinking they would be perfect for me, but I had the same issue with them not locking down tight on the rail like the regular TD panels do. Now, if Magpul would just make some textured XTM panels, then I think I'd be in rail cover heaven. I guess that's why you see so many people stippling them themselves.

I've found that if you pry up on the metal clip slightly on KAC panels you can get them to lock on the the rails tighter. Use a small screwdriver for this.

I lock most of my KAC panels on side rails in the center of the rail, away from the precut rail slot. Put it where you want it and pry up with a flatblade screwdriver. VERY tight when locked in this way.

Silicon works pretty good. I've used this myself and have recommended it in the past.

Is the video mentioned in the thread still up on the net somewhere?

No, unfortunately it’s not.

I needed the video for another project I was working on, looked for it on my hard drive over the holiday weekend, and must have deleted it.

Use a heat gun and bend the panel in the middle.
