The Marlin .30-30 knocks em down

Decided today after not seeing much last couple of times out if I see a doe she is mine :) At 10:00am this fella walked out. 50 yards and bullet went in just at the shoulder/neck crease and exited low ribcage behind elbow on other side. Fell in his footsteps.

Federal 150 grains did the trick.

I know most European hunters would laugh initially, but a Marlin 1894 in .30 WCF or .45-70 Govt would be my first choice for one of their driven boar hunts.

They would not be laughing after seeing the carnage left by the Yankee rifle.

This morning I had a small chunk of elk venison for breakfast. My freezer is getting low. I need to spend some time in the mountains and fill it up again.

That's a nice buck, and a nice rifle! I'm a big fan of the .35 Remington cartridge in lever guns.

I shot my first buck at 13 with a 30-30 Grandpa gave me.

It was a Winchester Model 64 with a 24" barrel. The deer was a 180 pound 2 point (4 pt to White Tail hunters) Mule Deer.

We paced the shot at about 75 yards. The 150 grain Core-lokt bullet worked beautifully. As Grandpa said it, "it looked like the shot cut its legs off".

I the rare year that I go deer hunting, I still carry that open sight "antique". It is easy to carry, fast to the shoulder, fun to shoot and gets the job done.

I love that gun.

I get 4.5 inch groups at 200 with Winchester Super X. 2.5 with the Hornaday. Plus, a little more noise and kick (it is slight, but noticeable). This with my Marlin 336 30-30. The Hornadays will bring down the hogs, too, very well.

Nice little buck. My son took his first deer with a Marlin .30-30 and earned the rifle for his own. Last year, my daughter took her first with the same rifle. It'll place 3 factory Winchester 170 gr. Power Points into 1.5 inches off the bench. I installed Williams receiver sights on it years ago, and those Marlins just plain work!

Also, I visited your website...very nice knives. I would like a slim line Sidekick or Companion or that little EDC...when I get some spare funds.

I have accumulated hundreds and hundreds pieces of 30-30 brass over the years. I'm going to get one one day. I had a Remington 788 bolt action in 30-30 that I sold and regretted.

I've logged a few years hunting boar in Germany, and I think they would find our Marlins interesting, to say the least. Granted, sporterized Mausers are a more traditional choice in that environment, but the Germans do maintain an interest in many uniquely American arms, and I know that my Jaeger friends would find it difficult to argue with the results. I suspect the appeal of the wonderfully-excessive .45-70 would transcend most borders without much difficulty. The 336 in .30-30 is more reasonable, of course, but when your quarry is an ill-tempered boar in thick brush at twilight, reasonability is vastly over-rated.
