Full story and city list here: http://phandroid.com/2010/12/01/verizon-lte-launches-december-5th-official/

Everyone has heard of Sprint 4G, which is a Wimax product. Sprint's 4G service is done in conjunction with a company called Clear.Sprint basically owes Clear, and even Comcast has a stake in Wimax

I have Sprint/Clear...more on that in a minute...

Well Verizon today unveiled their 4G LTE product, with many cities/airports being lit on Dec 5th

Begun the 4G wars has.

So, what is the difference between LTE and Wimax. LTE is faster on paper, but so far the feedback is they are about the same

LTE has lower latency.

Here is the difference for me.

Sprint/Clear charges me $55 a month for unlimited use. HOWEVER, if you suck up 2-3 gig a day, you get put on a watch list which will result in your connection being throttled if your tower gets congested even slightly

Verizon is $50/month for 5GB of data or $80/month for 10GB of data and you will pay more if you go over. LOL!!!

Pick your poison! Either way, we are getting closer and closer to a Comcast free world

Anyway, here is what I get from Sprint/Clear most nights. I look forward to seeing the first LTE speed tests for comparison sake

I was hoping Verizon would gobble up a local fiber network called Utopia and offer FIOS, but it doesn't look like they will be expanding their network, and instead will be focusing on LTE, which makes sense long term as people are looking for speed on the go.

That is one thing I love about 4G; I take wifi speeds with me everywhere. On my phone and laptop

what are the speeds farther away ? 50 miles is pretty close ? what about across the country ?

would be cool for a BU for me :) but the 2-3 gig limit would bite me sadly with my business :)

could be cool for a ipad ? streaming movies and such though kinda funny unlimited but if you use much we throttle ya !!

I haven't figured out the Clear system yet. It's supposedly automated, so they claim you can eat as much bandwidth as you want until the tower gets congested then you take it in the bum and get throttled.

I once watched about 7 straight hours of Netflix HD content and my speed was fine, then a couple of hours later my bandwidth was suddenly floored at peak time.

Even though I wasn't consuming lots of bandwidth at that moment, I was flagged, until congestion subsided.

Either way, I will take being throttled over being charged per gig over a limit.

Interesting. Worth noting that the Verizon iPhone, if it happens in January as predicted, is unlikely to support LTE, and in fact even the subsequent first iPhone revision in about June probably won't support it either. There are vague rumors, however, that the Verizon iPad, which will likely happen even if there's no Verizon iPhone, will support LTE.

My Verizon phone has internet, and my wife pays for it - that's as much as I know about cellphones. :D I've never even set up my inbox - I aren't that smart, and I don't care. :p

I've NO idea what you're talking about, but I LOVE the sound of a "Comcast-FREE" world. Comcast keeps getting voted WORST business in America for a reason - they SUCK!

I will take Comcast any day. I don't have to worry about data limits (I am not one of those users who abuse limits but would go through 5G no problem in less than a month)

This is a random time period at my dad's, where I am convalescing after breaking my ankle, but at my house is similar. I have had much better results (10mbs -- 20mbs down at my house during off peak)

Heck, my AT&T 3G on my iPhone 4 is usually about .9-1mb up and 1-4 mbs down depending on time of day, where I am at, etc.

Why is your upload speed so much faster than your DL speed?

I have an Evo on Sprint and can get 4g. I never use it though because 4g service is spotty at best unless you are in a downtown area. When I do have it though and its a strong signal I can pull 8-9 mbps which is plenty fast, faster than my cable at home. I cant ditch the cable yet though because my 4g at home is slower than 3g. I think in a year or so when the networks mature a bit more the cable companies are going to have to do some worrying for the average person that doesnt need 25+ mpbs download speeds.

My fastest Comcast Speed VS fastest Sprint/Clear 4G speed

The caveat being, 4G goes where I go at all times. 3G pales in comparison

I'm so effing sick of Verizon I don't care if they give me a free hooker with my service I'm thinking about dropping them altogether (cell phone, home phone, internet and TV). Bastards can rot in hell as far as I'm concerned.

Like most communication companies, Verizon is regionalized to the point where service in one part of the country has very little, maybe nothing, to do with the rest of the country. It's a good service around these parts.

I have to use Verizon (work), but have no reason to dislike it other than their historical inability to make a deal with Apple. Likewise my wife has to use AT&T (iPhone) and they've been just fine too.
