One to two times a month we attend a one-day tactical carbine refresher course. I dusted off my father's 21yr old Daewoo and brought it for everyone to try out during the lunch break. During firing of the first magazine, the trigger would not reset. I performed the usual immediate action drill and was able to fire one more round, but again with no reset. I noticed the safety lever was frozen, and wouldn't move at all.

I've never even opened a Daewoo, and had no manual or parts schematic. Using only my extensive experience with AR's and my hobby familiarity with AK's, I decided to risk diving in and trying to figure out what went wrong. Heck, just trying to figure out how to take it apart was the most fun. When I got home I started slowly dismantling the lower receiver, which I learned is similar in take-down and operation to an AR. After spraying high pressure solvent into the black, crud-covered FCG and removing the safety lever, I saw the little culprit sliding around inside:

FYI, this was 55gr Winchester "White Box" (USA223R1).

I don't know what decade Dad last cleaned this weapon, which was not only filthy but encrusted with grease that had hardened like dried toothpaste. So I decided to get out the punches and go further with disassembly and give it a thorough cleaning. If you look closely maybe you can read the MPKD on the bolt and KD on the extractor. BTW, the extractor spring (sorry, no pic) was only 3 coils, with a blue insert.

Back together with some of my other black side-folders:

PS - Dad bought this brand new in '86 for just over $300! Now if I could only convince him to ditch that "Grandpa" Tasco scope...
