Thanks for all the replies about the Ruger Mini 30.

Any thoughts about what and where to get a AK in the $600 price range.

Thanks for your time.

I bought one of these recently and it is a very nice rifle. It has a forged receiver (which makes it a little heavier) but it is a lot more 'old school' than my Arsenal Saiga (which is a fine rifle, but has a stamped receiver and black plastic furniture).

I would hit the used market. I picked up a Lancaster and an Interarms Tantal used for under 600.00. Check out sturmgewehr, gunbroker, and your friendly neighborhood equip. exchange around the corner. I would steer clear of the CAI builds unless they are "certified" by Henderson Defense, may save you some headaches.

Happy Hunting, and Merry Christmas.

For a little more than that Century built M60, look into the Arsenal SGL-21 series. Friends don't let friends buy Century.

I picked up an Arsenal SGL-21 at a gun shop last Friday for $679 out the door. South Carolina suspends sales tax on firearms-the 2nd Amendment Tax Free Holiday-for one weekend a year so that helped save about $48.

Sagia is where to go. Arsenal is also good. Stay away from Century at all cost. If you want it to be super cool buy a parts kit and build it yourself. You can pick the exact AK you want and you are in charge of the quality of the build.

If you DIY you're still limited by the quality of the parts you start out with. You could build on a top notch NoDak Spud receiver, but if all you can find is a junky parts kit the gun won't be all that great. Alternatively, you could start with a Saiga: the foreign receiver will change your 922(r) count by one, but on the plus side you won't have to invest in a bending jig or spot welder.

I would go with an arsenal SGL-21. Bottom line is that I believe it is the best AK in that price range. Furthermore, it is a factory built rifle and not a parts gun like the century's and other builders in the price range.

If you like the configuration that the SGL-21 is in, then it is your best option. If you would prefer a different grip, a different FCG, a different stock, 14x1L threads, etc. you'd be better off starting with a base Saiga and making the changes yourself.

This. Too bad you didn't jump on last year's Christmas sale from Arsenal. I got 2 SGL-21's for under $500 each. I spoke to the guys from Arsenal at the SAR Show West this weekend, and they are not going to bring back that "special" offering, especially since they run at around $800 each now.

$350 for a Saiga plus $150 in conversion parts gets you a brand new barreled action that is authentically Russian.

Another vote for the Arsenal 21 series.
