Didn't see a thread on this in the search.

Anyone planning on going? What days? Where you staying?

I put off making my reservations and the price and time involved in getting out there is damping my spirits big time. $800 in flight & hotel plus 7 hours out and 6 hours back, not to mention TSA...

I went last year and made the mistake of staying at the Bellagio when I could of stayed at the Venetian and walked to the convention. If I go this year, I'm gonna stay at the Venetian. I hope AAC is doing a party again this year, last years was pretty awesome.

I'm going all 4 days and I'll be staying at my house.

I'll be there too. Apparently we have a couple condos booked somewhere near downtown. Supposedly they're a better deal for the money than the big hotel/casinos right now due to the bad RE market.

Should keep me from blowing too much cash gambling, as well as avoiding other pitfalls.

I'll be there for the whole thing, thanks to realizing that if I didn't start using all the airline miles I've built up from work, they'd expire.

Staying at the Mirage, so I can walk across the bridges at the beginning of the day and stumble/crawl back across them at night. WAY better than staying at the Riveria like I did last year.

I've used Vacation Rentals By Owner (http://www.vrbo.com/) with great results in Hawaii. Often a far better value than a hotel, especially for groups. If I weren't in need of burning up airline miles, I'd have used them for this trip.

Yep and staying at the Wynn.

Going for the whole show and the media day on the monday out in Boulder City on the range. I'm officially a journo for the show.

I found a suite hotel: 2 rooms each with bath and a living dining kitchen room. $65 +tax. Its a few miles from the strip but, hey, I am not going for the gambling.

If you guys have any more info on renting a condo for the week I think I'm going with three of my friends and we would love a place that we can split 4 ways that would accommodate is all.

I should be there the whole time as long as I can get my leave approved.

rob_s
12-05-10, 11:47
I think I'm going to go Sunday, stay for Media Day on Monday, do the show Tuesday and Wednesday, and leave Thursday morning. About two days of SHOT is about all I can take without getting bored. I rarely leave the tactical/ninja section as most of the other decoys and various shades of real tree bore me to tears.

I'll should be there, but its possible that issues at the department may prevent me from being able to make it.

There better be some damn pics loaded from smartphones within 20 minutes of the doors opening.

I hate waiting 20 hours for the first pics to be unloaded. Damn attendees are so freaking selfish and making us wait.

I wasn't there last year, but reports were that iPhones got no reception in the hall. Every year the cell towers have been taxed over capacity.

I'd like to see media-only wifi in the hall but I won't hold my breath.

I've got the week scheduled for leave but the Dept. is making noise about canceling AL due to a new software being installed for the SO and mandatory training. We will see what happens.

My iPhone worked fine for calls in the hall last year. Sometimes I think my wife thinks I'm the little guy from the Verizon commercials. I wasn't using any data service though.

Doesn't look like getting to go is in the cards for me this year :(

If you have never gone before, at least give yourself 2 full days to look around (won't see all the Tactical section in that time frame).

I like staying at the Venetian as I can make it to my room with ease and drop off the 800lbs of catalogs, t-shirts and hats that I don't need and then go back down to the show.

There is also something to be said for being able to use your own bathroom. ;)

This is correct. If you had ATT, you were SCREWED. Us with Verizon had the place to ourself. ;)

Yep. Every time I see AT&T's "fewest dropped calls" commercials, especially after trying to use my iPhone in a place like that, I get the overwhelming urge to punch an AT&T rep in the face. Their service sucks in Vegas.

No, it blows. Saying it sucks is being far too generous.

I was given some tips for the Show and based on previous years experience at the IWA in Germany I think they are valid:

1. Make sure you have something to carry the swag in - free plastic bags do not do it. Even if the lady giving it to you has plastic tits to match.

Have a decent pack or better yet, the hot tip is to use a wheelie bag, if like me you are intending to carry camera gear as well as collect lots of gizzits.

2. There will be 50,000 visitors. Half of them will be dressed as tacticool refugees from a PMC or PSD - tactical pants and black polo shirt. Don't be one of them and you will get more face time, playtime and presents from the corporates.

3. Make a hot list of the stands you definately want/need to see and kill those first.

4. Wear comfy footwear.

5. Be a tightwad and bring in a sandwich. I also use my British Army insulated field cup and take coffee with me into shows - that way I can eat and drink at my convenience.

6. As a guesstimate based on my Euro experience I collect around 10 - 15 pounds of brochures a day. These will be UPS'd home.

For the photo hounds I will see if I can load some stuff on the evening of the monday media day. I will have to be picky because my entry requires me to take pics for a couple of European magazines.

rob_s
12-07-10, 13:23
Given the internet, I don't take any brochure from anyone unless it's really graphically interesting and even then I think twice. Just no reason to. Business cards, on the other hand, I take and give out whenever possible.

Something I noticed along with that re: press badges. If yours says "internet" you'll get treated one way, if it says "press" (or whatever they put for print) you'll get treated another. Bonus if they recognize the title you write/work for. Both will get treated differently than dealers/distributors IME.

There were certain people who would roll to a booth I saw and get treated like a long lost brother. If you spend a lot of course you get treated well.

That is correct. Be a FFL/SOT with cash in hand and you will be treated VERY differently. ;)

I have learned that Shot is MUCH more interesting if I hide my badge. It is amazing what you will hear people say when they don't know who you are. :D

Shot to me is virtually a waste of time. My largest accounts typically do not do "shot show specials." So I am there to press some flesh with old friends, make new friends and avoid people I find annoying.

The best part though is the M4C dinner. Good to see friends again and eat an expensive meal.

I'm out. I guess I waited too long to make arrangements, but I don't even like driving the 30 minutes to work every day. The idea of a 10-12 hour total travel time each way is more than I can deal with.

Yes. It is supposed to be a closed event for dealer/ distributors/ media, but its turned into anyone who knows someone with a FFL or shop. This has killed a lot of the legitimacy of SHOT along with a few other things. If you watch some of the internet threads, you will find a lot of people posting about how they are going so they can get free handout/ trinkets.

I won't be this year. With my broken ankle, even if I am off crutches by then (my doctor appt is 5 days before it starts so they can XRay it and see how it is), I won't be rehabbed enough to spend all day walking around for 4 days.

Have fun!

Capt. Nick and I will be there, along with our Arizona, California, Minnesota and Texas distributors. We will be staying at The Palazzo, and we will have a banner up with OneUp DesignLab and their MultiTasker tools. BattleComps will be on many demo rifles throughout the show.

We will be bringing free t-shirts and pretty girls to hand them out, as well as meeting many of our old friends, and newer friends, and friends we haven't met yet.

Hope to see you there!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

I'm there with a defence journal and to be honest with what it is costing if all I wanted was hats and brochures it would be cheaper to get them by mail order.

Anyone fancy an official members dinner? We were going to go on the scheduled family fishing trip but the publisher could not see the benefit of letting us spend $800...........boring bastard.

So, anyone up for an inaugural annual get together somewhere??

If you are there as part of the legit media, the show is built for you. If you are going as part of the industry, the show is meant for you. If you are there to buy, it is meant for you.

I'm not sure why you would be paying to go on a fishing trip.

If any of you are in town Monday night, the 17th, the nightclub I work at, XS at the Wynn/Encore, will be open. Its our locals/club industry night so it will be pretty busy. If anyone would like to come in and check it out I can have my buddy, one of our bartenders, put you and your friends on the guest list for a line pass and free entry. It will help him meet his weekly guest list requirement. PM me if you're interested, any time from now til Sunday the 16th.

ETA: Info I need from you is first and last name of the main person in the group and how many people will be with you. I'll give you instructions on how to get in.
