I have been looking for a .308 bolt gun for some time and found a deal on a brand new Fabrique Nationale Patrol Bolt Rifle XP that I just could not pass up, it will be shipped out to me next week.

FN PBR XP 308 Win. Detachable Box Magazine 20” Fluted Barrel
The PBR XP is built on a Pre-’64 style bolt-action featuring Controlled Round Feeding, a massive external claw extractor, proven three position safety and a one-piece MIL-STD M1913 steel optics rail utilizing oversize 8-40 mounting screws.

• 308 Winchester / 7.62x51mm NATO
• 20” fluted cold rotary hammer-forged medium heavy barrel with a four-groove, right-hand, 1 in 12” twist rate and recessed target-style muzzle crown
• FN/Hogue synthetic stock in olive drab with full-length aluminum bedding block
• Detachable box magazine
• Three-position safety
• Controlled Round Feed with external claw extractor

I need to get a decent optic for it. While I know I could spend thousands of dollars for a super special forces night vision 2-1,300x180 something or other, I am really looking for a decent optic below a thousand bucks.

I recently bought an IOR Valdada fro my FAL that I am very impressed with and I am considering a some of their options. http://www.valdada.com/vn/ior/03

I am looking for something with a ranging reticle (like the MP8 reticle on the IOR) or even a Mil-Dot.... and perhaps something that I can get calibrated dial for a .308...

Anyone have an good experience with a moderately priced scope?

Thanks in advance.

Millett TRS is a good, clear scope that is mil dot. They run around $400.00 to $600.00 and are durable. I use a TRS-2 on my Remington 700. It works as good a my $1000.00 LEUPOLD MK4 on my AI AW.

I used a Bushnell 4200 Elite is 6 x 24 x 50 with 30mm tube and it is Mil-Dot. You can pick them up for $699.00 so far it has been great.

I have an FN PBR, with a Super Sniper 10X (side focus version 10X42M) mounted in TPS rings. Thing runs like a champion. Solid clicks, clear view. I love it. You can pick one up at riflescopes.com for $400.

For under a $1K scope I'd go with a Leupold 3.5-10x40 Mark 4 LR/T 30mm w/M1 turrets SWFA (http://www.swfa.com/pc-3182-297-leupold-35-10x40-mark-4-lrt-30mm-riflescope.aspx) has them for $899

Sounds good any specific reason for the M1 1/4MOA over the M2 1/2MOA with the BDC????

And what do you guys think about Mil Dot vs. Tactical Milling?

Last question: Front Focal reticle or Illuminated reticle???

This is so complicated!

Thanks guys.

Finer adjustment with the M1 1/4 MOA turrets. You should use the turrets that match the caliber that you are shooting. 308 use 308 BDC (Bullet Drop Compensated) turrets. 223 use 223 BDC Turrets. Once you get it together and set your dope (Dope Card) for the ammo you will use, the 1/4 and 1/2 or even 1 MOA turrets will make sense.

I prefer Mil Dot. May be that I am just use to using the Mil Dot.

Last question: Front Focal reticule or Illuminated reticule???

Illuminated if you will ever shoot in low light.

This is so complicated!

Thanks guys.

Not so just something new for you. With a little training you will be an old pro before you know it. Just a warning. Precision shooting is addictive.
