They're great for airsoft. As far as mounting on a real firearm whose use will include anything more than casual and static range plinking, they are absolutely sub par. Shoddy workmanship, distorted optics, and delicacy under any real recoil are three of the biggest issues. The ones that include quick detach mounts are especially in want. I have never seen one securely fasten itself to a rail. If you don't want to spend a lot of money on optics, Primary Arms, Vortex, and the Burris tactical stuff are good options. You can also get used Aimpoints for not a lot of money.

They are junk. Pure and simple. Your money would be better used starting a fire than buying anything from NcStar.

They will not last. If you buy one, you will regret it at some point. Then you will spend more money on a good scope. Buy the right scope the first time.

I was given an NcStar spotting scope. It's worth what I paid for it.

well what i want is, something under $150 prefferably. small magnification like 3x or 4x and an acog style cause i dont like the way regular scopes looke really. i prefer open sights to begin with but i dont like being zoomed in too far, but no magnification makes it hard to see. and i would really like illuminated reticles

You aren't going to get anything at that price that is worth anything.

You're much better off using the irons until you can get a real optic even if its used. Even look at something like a Leupold VXII 1-4X, Leupold Mark AR, ect.

NCStar is china made airsoft garbage for toys.

alright, well i dont really got alot for money and i cant see spending more than $200 on a scope to be honest. so got any other suggestions for tactical compact scopes in general? or am i doomed lol

Get a mason jar, apply duct tape, write "good scope" on tape, fill with money, do not touch until you have enough saved up to spend at least $300 on a Leupold VX 2 1-4 or a used Aimpoint, shoot irons till then.

I'm as cheap as the next person, but with optics you really do get what you pay for. A quality optic really is an improvement over irons. A poorly made optic is simply a liability though.

Personally watched a Portland Police Officer (who had the cash to purchase a Hummer H2) try to sight in his patrol carbine at the range. Optic was a NcStar.

It would have been humorous to watch, had he not proudly proclaimed that it was his patrol carbine and that he might need to take a shot someday to save a hostage. Never seen someone blow through that much ammo trying to sight in. He never did get it really sighted in, even after a couple hours.

Watch the EE here or the SWFA Sample list for good deals on quality used optics.

More bang for your $$$$.

You can get a used Leupold in your price range that I would take over an NCStar any day.

Are you freaking kidding me! My 12 yr old son had like 3 of them for him and his "airsoft" buddies. Kept him away from my optics. But now he is interested in different things. I am quite sure he will come around and want "dad's" stuff.

Seriously though, save, save, and save. I don't understand this "I want it now generation". Maybe you might be better off selling your rifle and buying another Xbox FPS. At least that way you have a variety of quality optics in the game.

As others have said, just shoot with irons until you save up enough for quality optics. I have been shooting for about four years now, and only recently have I begun putting serious consideration into optics.

Looks really don't mean anything. This is a performance-based forum.

Good optics cost a certain amount of money. There is no free lunch.

Primary Arms stuff is cheap but half way decent quality. It's not gonna hold up like an Aimpoint or anything but if your plinking and putting holes in paper every now and then it'll work.

While I am being mildly flippant, I'm also as serious as a heart-attack.

The OP will get infinitely better performance out of a solid BUIS than a POS optic.

The advice we've given to save your cash is as sound as it gets. If you're looking for a reason to justify buying a junk optic, then I suggest you buy it, use it, and report that justification back to us. Not trying to be ignorant, just saying. Make a jar, drop your 1's and coins in it, then get yourself a decent piece of glass.

jklaughrey
12-13-10, 00:22
I will resonate my fellow member lethal dose. I find it incomprehensible that a person would be so impatient that they purchase junk with the knowledge presented to them and offered freely. If you need justification for your purchase then buy it and go to your local mall and play ninja. Or you can take the sound advice and suggestions made by members here on M4C. Being impatient is a sure sign of immaturity.

12-13-10, 09:26
true enough i cant argue with that. im just new with all this ar15 stuff and i am surprised at how expensive optics are, because i am used to my family always usingh simmons scopes and those arent very expensive. thanks guys for all the helpful information. i will start saving more, and then when i have more i will look around at the gun show in feb. and see if anything good is used there.

jklaughrey

Sometimes gun shows are rife with fakes and clones and dishonest sellers. You would be better off buying from the EE here on M4C.

viperpit7
12-13-10, 11:27
where i live, gun shows are small (held in a hockey rink) and they are always the same sellers. ive been going for a while so i know most of the sellers, but i will look around on here and see what i find, i wont make any snap decisions on it. ill look around for a while.

I bought exactly what you are looking to purchase. I had a tacticool .22 and I wanted something cheap just to mess around with. My expectations were low.

I ordered and received the scope. It was abysmal. Almost useless. It didn't come close to meeting my extremely low expectations.

The reticle was heavy and difficult to place shots with. It covered up too much of the target. When you cranked up the power there was so much fish eye and the target was so dark you couldn't tell what you were aiming at. Move your head a quarter of an inch and your point of aim changed by a foot or more at 100 yards.

Illumination. Ooh it has red and green. Wow. NOT! Even at the lowest setting it washes everything out. Again, useless.

Take a paper towel tube, some clear tape and some water. Tape the ends of the tube and fill it with water. That's about what it looks like. If you want illumination, have a buddy shine a flashlight on it for you.

Please don't do it.

One and the same. Might have a different brand name...but same old s**t.

I've had a couple of the NCStar/Basksa/whatevers. While they worked, the tiniest bump or knock would disturb the zero. On the variable power one, the zero changed through the zoom range. On another, every time I adjusted elevation, it would also adjust windage and vice versa (and it was mounted 100% straight). You will just end up really frustrated if you get one.....I ended up using my NCStar as a range target, lol! :)

By contrast, that Weaver I mentioned above is an excellent scope for the money; made in Japan, very clear glass, true 1x on the bottom end for both eyes open shooting, etc. Before I got my TR24 I was using one for 3 gunning (for 10 months or so), and it held up well. But if you need illumination, you'll need to spend a tad more....this Burris TAC-30 is by all accounts a very good scope, and would be the next peg up, IMO at around $300:

I am new to the AR world. I bought a NC Star sight unseen as I was putting my rifle together. I returned it as soon as I received it. It was obvious that it was crap from the first glance. I know, I should have known better.

I am now looking for a BUIS. Feel free to PM me if you have one for sale.

Run away! Before I found this forum and sound advice I got one of those for my BM. I only use that rifle for hitting paper at the range, so no big deal right? Well the recoil will slowly loosen your optic off the gun. I am being serious about that one. With ever shot your POI will shift. Eventually the scope will rattle off the gun if you keep shooting it. Yes I tested that idea even though I could never zero it for plinking purposes. I wanted to know how far it would go when it came to loosening up. You could loctite it, but I never bothered. It sits in a box in my closet. My BM sits in my safe. I can careless about the optic, and the BM is a project waiting to happen.

I would suggest this: http://swfa.com/Burris-2-7x35-Fullfield-II-Tactical-Rifle-Scope-P5967.aspx

It is on Clearance sale for $150.

I have the non-tactical version (non target turret) mounted on my Mini14 and I couldn't be happier with the scope. It isn't a Leupold, but for the price (especially this price) it is an outstanding piece of glass. I will be far better a performer than any NcStar or other low end Chinese POS.

While it does not have the illuminated reticle, the ballistic retical on it is real useful. I have been able to take it out to 300 yards and it has been well within the Mini's 2-3moa spread.

While in 2X, it is definitely slower than irons or a red dot close in, but that is the price you will pay for magnification. Eye relief is decent.
