It's what i started with and LOVE it!!!!
to date shot a little over 1,500rds still not one issue.

It depends on what you're plans for you're AR are.
For me it's pretty much just range and plinking but if TSHTF I still have
a trust-worthy AR that I am well practiced on and enjoy shooting.

I'm not going to be doing any comp shooting, scuba diving, jumping out of airplane/helicopter with it.....
So the M&P15 is G2G with me.

.

I've owned one and recommended M&P 15's to several friends who have been happy with them.

I think if you're going to move up into something other than a basic M&P model, there might be better optioned guns for the same or less money. It seems S&W prices go up kind of fast when they add a few options.

The M&P15 OR was my first rifle 2 years ago. It has the 4140 steel 1x9 twist barrel and semi-auto BCG. I've since FF'd the barrel and added a BCM full auto carrier after about 1200-1300 rounds. It still has the original bolt. Recently I ran it through another ~800-850 rounds at a TigerSwan pistol/carbine class.

To date it has fired 55 gr. PMC, 55 gr. Rem, 55 gr. Federal, 69 gr Prvi, and 62 gr. Silver bear steel cased HPs (shot these during the class). I've never had any malfunctions with it.

Unfortunately, I don't have one of the 1x9 twists that can shoot the 75 gr. bullets well. I don't get any keyholing, but the groups approach 6" with the heavier bullets and the rifle is capable of sub 2" groups with 69 gr. Prvi match or 62 gr. Winchester Powerpoint hunting ammo.

I consider it a solid rifle to start with, but would prefer that all my rifles have 1x7 twist for the reason that I want the option of shooting the heavier OTMs (5.56 TAP) for home defense. On the flip side, there appears to be a slow trend away from the heavier 75-77 gr. OTMs in favor of the 60-69 gr. bonded softpoints for barrier penetration.

Just out of curiosity, have you ever worn that sling for an extended period of time?

But use the search function. Every 2 months, someone asks about the M&P 15 series, and the same responses get put up.

1. Works great for about 95% of what most people would use it for, probably even higher than that.
2. Good value. Not great, but good.
3. Might not have all the boxes checked off on The Chart, but see #1
4. Good starter platform, either for future building, or for learning.
Here. (https://www.m4carbine.net/gtsearch.php?cx=003496919632624929056%3Adhiwgm0hbaa&cof=FORID%3A10&ie=UTF-8&q=M%26P+15&siteurl=www.m4carbine.net%2Fforum.php)

Added after SA80Dan's post: I hope I don't come off as a snob. I have both a Colt 6920 and a -15T. I like my M&P15T. I recently converted it into an SBR. See #4.

15k rounds through mine so far; used on courses and for 3 gun and carbine comps; no problems at all. Shoots any old ammo you care to use; the majority of that 15k has been Brown Bear.

Aside from that - what Chameleox said sums it up. Not a high end AR....but certainly not bottom rung either.

There is already plenty of information on this site regarding the M&P-15. Please take the time to search for it instead of starting a new thread asking an old question.
