So I will be ordering a Scattergun Tech. extended +2 mag extension for my 870. I see some people adding a mag clamp in which to hold the extension to the barrel a lot tighter. Are these really needed or will I be GTG without one?

Mag clamps do a couple of things.
They can help to keep the extension from backing out.
They add support to prevent the extension from being bent/knocked out of alignment.
They can provide a space to add a rail for a light.
They can be an attachment point for a sling.
The cheapo Choate is just about useless.
CDM has a nice one, and the Nordic models are very nice too. There's another nice one that I can't remember the name of.
Mesa clamps with the rail sections stick out to the side noticeably.
You may not absolutely need one, but if one of the above is area of concern or interest it may help.

ETA: as with carbines there are quite a few craptastic versions that will be made of pot metal, be ginormous, or otherwise have quality issues.

I have used the Clark mag tube clamp on the last couple of 870's I have owned and they are well made. If you check the mag tube periodically to make sure it has not loosened under recoil, a clamp is probably not necesary.

I was thinking about the Clark Custom one as well. I guess I will go with that one. Is that a Scattergun extension you have and if so how do you like it?

I have had a scattergun extension in the past and it was very well made. 870P pictured was bought complete from Vang Comp so it has his extension on it. No big difference in quality that I can see between the two.

The Clark model was the other one I was trying to think of.

I was convinced that I wanted a nordic until I saw these guys CDM Gear (http://www.cdmgear.com/default.html). I like the rail/QD sling option.

Looks well made.

Anyone handled one of these yet?

What guys?
If you're talking about CDM, yes they are good.

Have you put one through its paces? I just want to know if the mount is solid under lots of recoil? I have a Benelli M1 and the thing kicks like a mule and I want the light to stay put (scout light).

I haven't used one but enough people that I trust have and say it is GTG. I will be putting one on my ported barrel because it will clear the ports, I just haven't gotten around to ordering it yet.
The owner goes by CDMGear and Candewman on Mossberg Owner's and Shotgunworld.

Thanks for all the replies. I ordered the Scattergun Tech +2 extension with the Clark Custom mag clamp and Hogue 12"LOP stock.

The clamp is not optional, in my experience. The threads on the mag tube are very fragile, but only slightly less o than the tube itself. I have seen more than one completely shear the tube at the barrel trunion.

This is why I prefer the OEM Remington extension and clamp over all others.

That looks cool. Will have to stay tuned for some reviews.

I don't know if you can make it any more bomb proof than that! I've got a Scatergun extension on one gun and Vang Comp extensions on a few others, both are great parts. I prefer the Vang Comp unit as it is reversible, left-hand or right-hand, can swing either way. Have that Clark clamp on my big Super Mag, gun needs a clamp and the Clark piece works great.

I have the same item on my Remington 870 and don't run a clamp. I've beat the hell out of it, I mean really beat the sh*t out of it, and it still runs like a champ. I agree with some of the previous comments if you need it to mount a light, sling, etc. then they've got the potential to be useful other than that . . .

Most your newer style shotguns have a support welded to the magazine extensiontube. An example would be Benalli M4 or Benalli Nova Pump. I'm looking at making the conversion to an auto loader in the not so distant future. I see you have a Vang Comp style barrel. How's it working for you?
