Is this rifle unobtainable? I ask because I visited a sniper site and they were all happy about these old used m40a1 stocks they were getting then refinishing. I would love to invest in an accurate long range rifle in the next couple of years and there are many options I’ve even considered chey tac stuff but I think the one I would love to have would be this

It is a very obtainable rifle. It is a Remington 700, mcmillan stock, badger everything, and an aftermarket barrel...basically.

If you want GA Precision and they should be able to point you in the right direction.

You could build it yourself with relative ease.

tinman, what's your experience with long range shooting?

What distance do you consider long range?

You are within driving distance of both River Bend and Chatahoochee Rifle Clubs. Both have active NRA Highpower and Long Range programs. River Bend goes to 600 yards and Chatahoochee holds it matches at Fort Benning, so 1000 yard shooting is available there.

There are many hard holders at River Bend that would be more than willing to show you the ropes if you need it.

Technique and skill trump gear in mid (300 to 600 yd) and long range (800 to 1000 yd) shooting as well.

thanks for that info, i considered -1000meters long range, and i have no experience with it. i will look into that range, my brother in law frequents that chatahoochee range i believe.

tinman you should call and speak with George at GAP. He will make a rifle to your exact specs and will help you determine what you want and what you need to get it done.

Tinman:

The M40A1 isn't a factory item. USMC 2112 armorers built them (now building M40A3's), and each one is a custom work. That said, there are several good 'smiths out there that will build you an accurate M40A1 clone. www.gaprecision.net www.texasbrigadearmory.com www.ironbrigadearmory.com to name a few.

If you are just getting into LR rifle shooting, there's nothing wrong with picking up a good Savage or Remington .308 and building it up yourself with stock, optics, etc. That way you are spending more money on ammo and getting the trigger time in that it takes to learn the art. Once you are confident that this is what you would like to do, the rifle will still have good resale value and you can then upgrade.

Tinman, this guys is one of the top builders in the country and is only a few minutes from you, in Jefferson Ga. He will have just about every stock you can think of so that you could try them out and see what you like. His name is Jared Joplin and is an extremely nice guy.

+1 Always folks over there getting the itch, then selling their rifles after a couple hundred rounds. Great deals abound over there. Just watch yer checkbook!

I shoot at Gunsite frequently and know Jered as well.

If you want an M40A1, GAP has some ex-2112 USMC armorers in his employ that can build you an identical M40A1. Where you'll find an issue is if you want to go 100% accurate. The scope mount and rings, and the Unertl scope are either near impossible to come by, or very expensive (scope is typically $2500 alone). If you want the base rifle accurate and then plan to use quality base, rings and scope, you're o.k.

Jered can build you anything you want, and I HIGHLY recommend him. You will not have a complaint with a rifle that comes out of his shop. He can certainly build you an M40A1 clone, but to me, it be special to have one built by a guy that used to build and maintain them.

Gunsite is south of Athens, and Chief (the owner) is working to extend it to 700+ yards. It's a great range to learn the basics since there is little to no wind to contend with.

1OO% accurate?....Just call John at U.S.O....Them Scopes,S.Mount & Rings are also as accurate as you can get for alot less...I've seen an MST-100 go for as low as $1700.00 at the Hide. I went the cheeper rout with a U.S.O SN3 1.8-10X37 :D
