View Full Version : Aimpoint Micro R-1 $299 closeout at MidwayUSA (ugh)

Just a headsup: The Aimpoint Micro R-1 (H-1 with a silver stainless finish) is advertised in the Jan 2011 Midway flyer for $299.00.

The R-1 is functionally identical to the H-1 but comes in a silvery stainless steel finish.

(I have no interest in Midway or get nothing from people buying these -- just a heads up service. I don't even like MidwayUSA)

I would like to have one at that price but their online status shows:

Not available - One time run - Product is sold out and MidwayUSA is currently unable to obtain more. Products with this status were usually obtained through a one-time special buy. They cannot be backordered and may not be available again.

I just called them and they said they are expected to have these in stock in the next couple of weeks with the price being good until Jan 31.

It was just mailed out via email yesterday.

Interesting. The flyer just came (paper) on the 24th to me.

Sorry for the false alarm and thanks for checking on it.

Hmmm - nothing a little rattle can would not fix.

I've been thinking about getting a rail mounted on the top of my 870, and putting an H-1 or T-1 on it. The ~$500 price tag has held me back until now.

Very tempting. I was leaning more toward a compact ACOG to give something different a try. But at this price I may just revise that plan.

So this is almost the same as a T-1 or a H-1 minus the color and water depth of the T-1?

Yes. AFAIK it's the same thing as an H-1, just silver instead of black.

chadbag
12-26-10, 23:25
The R-1 is an H-1 in a stainless type finish. Made fornje handgun hunter amongst other intend users -- to match your stainless 44 mags and and S&W X-frames.

I don't think they sold very well. I know I got one in stock back in 2007 when the micros first came out. I also got several T-1 and H-1 in at the same time. The T/H-1 sold through quickly and were restocked. That R-1 just sat on the shelf. Finally this past spring as I finished my new carbine demo I was working on I decided I would use the R-1 for it since it was still on the shelf. Attached it to a DD mount and except for the silver finish on a black/fde/foliage green rifle it works just the same as any H-1 or T-1 I have used or have on my other guns. Good and sturdy and same user experience as the T-1 and H-1.

This is definitely a good value at $299. Just too bad that it is midwayUSA and not some real honest and loyal hard working aimpoint dealer that gets to help close these out.

I think they would have done better to allow some other (large-ish) dealer do the closeout for them than having MidwayUSA.

I am not particularly fond of MidwayUSA anyway but the reason for the above sentiment is that MidwayUSA is the Wal-Mart of the firearms world and regularly runs sales on stuff that are under what most dealers pay for items and they use their size to upset the market and push people around. (Note I understand capitalism and am not calling for gov intervention or anything).

Aimpoint could have rewarded a better deserving dealer with the closeout. (And for the record I am not talking about my store or anything, my Aimpoint business was inconsequential)

Just my own personal belief.

Blue painters tape to cover the lens and start spraying. Same concept as painting a AR. There are a few good threads on this topic here.

I've been to a few serious places (local drills get together and a nationally known training situation) with the R-1 on an AR and no one said anything about the color... I avoid normal "ranges" where old fogies shoot.

Looks like it is as simple as masking off the lenses. I've coated some flashlights before and used basic masking tape.

The base could be disassembled and painted separately. Shouldn't be too tricky. Only costs a few boxes of matches ;)

Got mine about 30 mins ago. Cool little sight, very light weight. This will probably turn out to be a better choice than my original idea of a CompC3. The color is not as bad as I thought it would be, but I',m gonna find out how much it would be to get it cerakoted anyway.

Mine on one of my FALs. :) Co-Witness with the irons is good (~lower 1/4?) at the 300M iron setting, but a bit too low at the 200M setting. About the same as my ML3 in a low mount. FYI, this is a commie made mount :( ,but it works very well and is preferred *by me* over the DSA, which sits too high for co-witness.)

It would not tighten down on a different FAL with an even lower US made rail that's no longer available. I checked the R1 factory mount on a DD rail also - no joy on getting a tight fit there either.

Does anyone know if the low mount LaRue or ADM T1 mounts increase the height over the factory mount? I shoot my FALs on steel out to 500 meters and the ability to co-witness is a biggie for 300M and beyond.

I know it's mounted way back, but due to astigmatism and eye dominance that's where it works for me. Range trip as soon as things warm up a hair.

UPS just showed up with my LaRue LT660 mount. Put it together and sliped it on my AR-15A3 Tactical Carbine. Now all I need is my back-up sight. Thinking about a Daniel defense A1.5 fixed rear sight. Waiting to see how some of the paint jobs turn out.

The R-1's factory mount is for weaver rails, which is why it won't fit the DD rail and I'm assuming the other rail.

The only flat black paint I had on hand was Rustoleum High Heat so I used that. Before I sprayed, I wiped it down good, lightly sanded it, and taped up the lenses with 3M painters tape. I actually applied the tape directly to lenses and used a razor blade to cut around the housing/scope body, making the tape cover the lens only so I could get the paint on the rim as well.

Also, I was an idiot and sanded it with the lens covers on so I wouldn't get any grit on the lens but as you can see, the paint on the front rim is a little darker and slightly goopy since I forgot to sand that part. So don't forget to sand the part that is covered by the lens cover in the front. :p

Thanks to the OP for putting this up. I will put these on top of the two FDE SCAR's from Grant's group buy (mind my own business then too) with either a couple of Bobro's or Larue's. They will likely go for a Cerakote tan or black when they arrive next week.

I own/ use an Aimpoint M2. That said, I would pick-up the R1 instead. Because of longer batterry life, more common battery, and lighter weight.

I ordered mine (the R1) with the ADM two-piece high (SOCOM) mount shipped 2nd Day Air for $415.

That would be my suggestion, unless you require an NV capable sight.

I don't know why, but the R1 dot is working better with my astigmatic eye VS my ML3 (/w 2 MOA dot). At usable power on both, the R1 has little or no distortion and even appears (to my eye) to be slightly smaller.

I'll shoot mine before painting, but Rustoleum Satin Low Sheen (has outdoor furniture pic on the front) has worked very well on FAL parts as well as a Ishy No. 1 Mk III. (It's a very close match to Imbel Black and does not mind getting oily). Plus that's what I have on hand.

I don't have astigmatism but I've noticed the same thing. To get the 2 moa dot to be anywhere close to a 2 moa dot I have to turn it down so it's almost invisible. At usable power the bloom seems to be less defined.

Interesting. The mount for the Micro is $45, but I'm wondering about return to zero, and how loose that twist knob will get without constant scrutiny.

I have the DD mount at about the same price, which is solid but not QD. I have been pleased with the return to zero on my ADM mounts. But I only did that once, just as a test.

As Joe Civilian, the QD feature is not a necessity for me. But it's almost always good to see more people building new products.

I was playing tonight and found another trick. If you take some time, an exacto knife, and are careful, you should be able to push aluminum foil under the knob and have less silver showing than I do. I have yet to paint mine in this manner, mostly because it takes time and some thick foil, I have neither.

Put my new H-1 on a Larue LT 661 I had. Used Duracoat Dark Brown to paint it. After painting three of these things I found if you tape over the front lens and cut the tape around the outside edge then push it into the lens recess it fits good allowing one to paint the lens lip.

If you look you can see that the two T-1s on the right are black on the inside of the tube, the H-1 is silver.

Unless you already have some Alumahyde (and have used it before) I would mull over using something else. It's leaves a really thick coating (more important if fitting parts after painting, of course) and requires a full week to cure.

Ah, I have not, but it was recommended on another board. Better option? I've never painted an optic.

Edit: wait, I'm not sure your reservations are all that bad. As you mentioned there are no parts being fitted here, and I don't care about the week. The sight is going on an SBR that I don't even have a BBL for Form 1 done for, so no hurry.

I went through several cans of Alumahyde back in my FAL building days - it's outstanding for refinishing the OEM plastic furniture, including covering/filling in moderate scratches. I did not care for it on metal - too thick and brittle. But you could easily have a different opinion.

Ordered mine on the 29th and it should be here tomorrow (4th). I don't think that's too bad considering the holiday in there. I never got any shipping info in my email from them, so I called yesterday to see where things were. My mount should be showing up from Primary Arms on Wednesday (5th) which is right in line since I ordered it a day after ordering the sight.

???? What does the switch have to do with it. The switch just sets a "level". The circuitry in the device translates that to the led output. The R-1 has different circuitry so the switch will translate differently. The R-1 is really faint but visible in really dark environments at low levels. The T-1 is not bit is visible through NV at low levels.

The R-1 has different circuitry so the switch will translate differently. The R-1 is really faint but visible in really dark environments at low levels. The T-1 is not bit is visible through NV at low levels.

The circuit and the LED are the same on the T-1, H-1 and R-1. The only thing that makes a T-1 NVD compatible is the coating on the lens.

My attempt. A little more "sheen" than I anticipated, but based on other uses it looses most after it ages and gets used. I also made the mistake of applying too heavy on the first coat. Several lighter coats a few minutes apart is recommended.

I have mine at home. You guys were right about the low setting on 1-4. On setting # 7 it flares out a bit.

When I go to paint it I am going to use a protractor and cut some circles out to cover the lenses perfectly. Then use some flat black rustoleum hard hard paint.

Just heard back from Midway. It should have shipped on Friday but UPS didn't pick up their truck so it started out yesterday. Not a big deal.

When spraying, try more thin coats with some tack time between coats instead of a thick coat to make it flatter. Plenty of paint in that rattle can to paint the little sight. Just back off it a bit.

Same thing happened to my shipping as well. Was supposed to ship on Friday but actually didn't ship till today (when it was supposed to be delivered) and got pushed to Thursday.

Freshly painted with Alumahyde II in Matte Black.

http://img718.imageshack.us/img718/46/img2557a.jpg

It should degloss a bit more upon drying. If not, I'm going to grab some krylon ultra flat black and hit this thing again. I kind of F'ed up on the battery cover and lower front ring area, but the cover is really nasty so I have to redo it for sure. Alumahyde is $ compared to krylon, so I have a feeling I'm going to be heading that route anyway.

Ups showed up today with two boxes, one from midway and one from larue! The aimpoint is very nice and solid as usual. All tools were included with the optic including a battery.

LaRues mount is awesome it's a lt751. Included with it was all hardware, Allen wrench, blue loctite and they were nice enough to throw In two bumper stickers, pocket constitution, some dillo dry rub and a beverage entry tool. Very pleased with them. Tomorrow I will attempt to paint the optic and zero

Mine showed up with a battery.

I had some initial trouble getting mine to mount to a picatinny rail. The moving "claw" was bottoming out before it could get a tight enough hold on the rail. In this condition, the optic could be made to slide forward and backward on the rail with firm hand pressure. I assumed this was the R-1 = Weaver, T-1 = Picatinny that I'd read about elsewhere.

I solved the issue to my satisfaction by carefully, with a flat sanding block, sanding down the flat space on the "claw" that was causing it to bottom out prematurely. It now grips solidly on my Ultimak mount.

Just curious, but are you saying that the rubber bikini wasn't on the sight either? I only ask because while my wrench was loose also, I had little fear of the lenses with their protection in place.

I just got mine in. It definitely needs to be painted. I am very excited. Got a mount arriving tomorrow the lt751. I do have a question though. I will mount the r-1 and lt751 on a colt 6920. What rear sight do I have to buy to get the absolute co-witness? Are all folding rear sights the same height? Which one is "best"?
Thanks!

All BUIS are the same height. Its the optic mount that determines absolute or 1/3 co-witness.

==================================

Just to clarify...

I know the questions was "Are all folding rear sights the same height?"

All AR-15 Folding Rear BUIS are the same height. There are Folding Rear Sights that are not the same height as AR-15 sights, those sights fit other model guns-HK's, SCAR's, etc.

FYI - There are two different AR-15 Folding Front Sight heights - Receiver Rail height and Gas Block height. You need to know if the location of where you are mounting the FS is lower than the Receiver Rail, (which is Gas Block height) or if it is the same height as the Receiver Rail (which is rail height).

There are other folding front sight heights for other models of guns, too.
So, I said all of this because if you see a good deal on a sight at a gun show, you need to know what height you need and to make sure it is for an AR.

Mine did too.

It seem from this thread that there are many like myself that are first time red dot buyers because of the exceptional price.

If anyony is looking at mounts the DD mount is 1/3 cowitness. For a point of reference with the rear mbus up i can see the whole front post(but not the block) and wings on the side.

When i first got mine i thought something was wrong with it because i was trying to look at the dot and it wasnt round and looked blurry. To make it short hold it at arms length and look through it at something.

I just mounted the R1 in an ADM modular base with their absolute "CO" riser. This seems to be working much better for *me* than the ML3 mounted lower 1/3. I'm left-eye dominate and also use a low cheek weld. My natural gun mount is very low. If I focus both eyes on the target as I mount the gun, all things are good - despite a lot of FSB in the tube.

A folding front sight could be another approach and I have one of the delayed delivery DD uppers on order that could fit that bill.
The paint job will do as well.

I got to look at a weaver brand mount today and I'm not sure what to think. I would think it should lock up solid since they have an extra rail lug on the bottom and the wing nut has a little jam nut to hold it down. I'm wondering though if you are supposed to re-use the screws that come with the micro since I didn't see any in the package. I'm tempted to buy one at the $45 price, but I'm thinking I might be better off with an ADM mount.

Got the Larue lt751 absolute co witness mount. It is a work of art. Came with mounting screws (one spare) and tools. Included in the box were bumper stickers, (my wife took the "God bless our troops, especially the snipers" for her car, she never wanted stickers on her car before) some dry rub for meat and an opener. I was really impressed with everything. Made me feel proud with all the American bashing going on. Those people at Larue are serious professionals and it shows in the details. I definitely will purchase my AR products there first.

Going to the gunshow in Lakeland and then on to the range to zero. Definitely have to have it painted but want to have it professionally done. Anyone get theirs back yet from sending it out to paint?

Are your front lenses mounted at a slight angle or are they flush with the outer ring ?

Looks good! I decided to do a similar set up on my 16" 762 OBR. I've got the R1 in a Gear Sector mount (thanks again for your help with the R1), but it left the R1 about 3/8" to low so I ordered a mini picatinny riser for $18 that will elevate it 1/2".

I'm still lookin for a NF 2.5-10x24 with NP-R2 and Zero Stop Turrets, but I don't think I'm the only one searching for one of these. I'll probably end up getting the 2.5-10x32 like yours.

From the second post in this thread:

Not available - One time run - Product is sold out and MidwayUSA is currently unable to obtain more. Products with this status were usually obtained through a one-time special buy. They cannot be backordered and may not be available again.

I just called them and they said they are expected to have these in stock in the next couple of weeks with the price being good until Jan 31.

I was going through the thread this afternoon and looked-over some of the pictures posted as well as re-read the tips learned by others.

So, I went to the hardware store today and purchased a few cans of spray paint, painters tape, and fine grit sandpaper.

I plan on painting my R-1 this weekend. I will see how it turns-out and post some pictures afterwards.

Originally, I bought the R-1 for a back-up sight to the other (2) Aimpoints I have (M2/ M4), but after mounting it and using the sight more extensively, I think that I may be coming to see the light and realize why so many shooters are using the micro-sights.

I have painted some other items in the past. Hopefully, this goes well because I originally planned on having it Duracoated. But, I was just a little leery about someone cooking my Aimpoint in an even, especially since I can't replace it for the $300 that I paid.
