Well, first off, no they don't.

Secondly, no they don't.

Third, the budget doesn't exist to put TSA guards in every shopping mall let alone x-ray machines let alone multi-million dollar backscatter machines. And malls aren't within the TSA's purview or jurisdiction.

I'd still like to see a real news source report on this. I don't put much stock in blogs, twitter comments, or headlines which include inflammatory language such as "police state" or "1984 is here!"

From the video, the only comment she makes is that they've "reached out" to security in those areas. Sounds like that's more along the lines of pamphlets or suggested security guidelines rather than anything especially insidious or a power-grab. The video even outlines that about the only thing the gov't can do with areas like private malls is perhaps provide grants or funding for security cameras.

And the DHS DOES have an obligation to look after potential terrorist targets. If malls and the like are potential "heartland" "you're not safe anywhere" targets, then it makes sense for the DHS to figure out how it would respond to a threat there and help the folks who run malls, etc. figure out how they would respond. Maybe even joint training, etc. Just like how lots of PDs conduct summer training in local schools so they know the layout and can train to respond to another Columbine.

I hate the TSA just as much as everyone else, but I'll worry myself with shit they're actually doing. Chill out.
