Got a couple hundred Winchester 64gr Powerpoint Soft Point bullets, and want to work up a load for them. Using them for SD rounds, but I want to try them out first before I order a bunch of them.

I have the following powder's on hand:

AA2230 - have a few pounds - Would prefer to use this up
AA2495 - Have a TON of this(use it for my 75gr BTHP Match load)
Varget - Have a few pounds(use mostly for 308)

Any body got any idea's where to start at?

The load data on Accurate's website recommends AA2230, 2460, & 2520 for a 64gr Berger HP. I'm sure that you could use that data for the Winchester projectiles. Starting charge weight for AA2230 was 20.3gr and ending charge was 22.5gr.

I'd start at 24 gr. Varget and move up to 26 grs. at the top. I've loaded the 64 gr. PP over 26 grs. Win. 748 which gives 2600 ft/sec. from a 16" barrel. I figure you'll find the right node at 25 to 25.5 grs. Varget.

I pretty much use Varget and 748 load weights interchangeably, as the velocities for various loads usually duplicate each other.

I tried Varget with the 64 grain Winchester SP a few years ago. I started at 24 grains and went up to 26.5. I found that in my tests the 25 grain load appeared to be the most consistant (lowest ES and SD) while the best accuracy was at the max, 26.5 grains. Looking back at my notes I wrote that the 26.5 was top end and noted to drop back to 26. Velocities ran from 2,600 @ 24 grains to 2,870 @ 26.5 grains.

Remember to always work up loads from about 10% below maximum and work up carefully. Each gun is an individual and may react differently.

This is Hodgdon's data for 63 gr so it will give you a starting load for Varget!:D Can't help for the other two powders! And seeing they have 26 gr of Varget as max load for the 69 gr bullet this should work just fine for the 64 gr Win!
