I have been thinking of picking one up for awhile but heard on TOS that the ARMS' mount have problems on the 553 and the optic becomes loose over time. What do you giuys think?

Have you taken it on and off several times or left it put? From what I hear is its the taking it on and off that does it to the mount. I hear some say that is a problem with ARMS mounts but I know little of them and have never used them.

I haven't had one issue with My 553 or any other ARMS product for that matter. Mine's used but not abused & never a prob. YMMV.

The quality of the arms mount varies, and dimensional issues on the mount coupled with dimensional issues on the rail can lead to a loose mount. The owner/ employee of arms, posting under a false name on TOS, suggested that a loose mount- one that move fore and aft on the rail- was in fact intentional and called it a "soft mount", likening it to a WW2 German mount for the MG42.
That and other issues caused him to be thrown off of that site.
With other then a 553 you can put it on a Larue mount (also raising it to what i believe is a better height.

This cannot be done with a 553, and as luck would have it, my 553 is loose on several of my Colt uppers. I therefore use it as a loaner for students.
This is not unusual- we see a lot of this.

Roger Dano. One Fed agency in my AO broke nine (9) levers off of SF M900 mounts. We have seen several on EO's as well.

I don't have to use a 553. Still, when i give it to a student to use it would be nice if it worked as it should.
A non adjustable throw lever is pretty much useless- especially when poorly made.

Thanks for the heads up gentlemen you just saved me some greenbacks. I guess I will wait until the 557 comes out.

I would buy a 553 if Mark LaRue would make a mount for it. ;)

Otherwise I will not purchase one.

Shihan- the 557 is same mount and body. Sorry!

Paulinsk- Larue cannot make a mount for the 553. The mount is one with the body. We were down this path a long time ago....

I guess I will stick with my N cell battery leaking 551.d1's. My wallet thanks you.
