View Full Version : Ammo Can Stove
Hello all!
I got bored on my day off today and decided to make a small and portable wood burning stove out of an old 7.62 ammo can!
I made a hinged door that latches shut, a sliding door to adjust airflow, removable and adjustable legs, a grate, and a small chimney. The chimney needs to be replaced with a larger diameter pipe, and will be made in three lengths of pipe that fit together so that the whole stove can be stored inside of itself. If the stove ends up working as I expect it to, I will modify a old USGI pup tent or a canvas tarp so that the chimney can pass through it and heat the tent during these cold winter months. I have not weighed it yet but it should be light enough to put in my pack if I sacrifice a few other nonessential items that I usually carry. Let me know what you think!

That's a great idea. I would like to try that with larger ammo cans like 20 or 40 mm.
motivation to run to the surplus store!

Pretty slick! My old Scoutmaster was a Korean War veteran, and had us build something almost identical when I was a Boy Scout 30+ years ago.
That's a pretty cool contraption you built.
Ya gotta love the things we come up with during the winter months.
Thanks for the comments all!
know you've gone and done it...I just gotta build one for my winter hunts!
A 20 or 40mm can should warm my bunk house nicely.
thanks to you this and IN for the bushcraftusa link!

that is very slick... I had never even thought of this idea before... and I have like 5 of the 20mm and .50 cans laying around in the garage
def gonna make one to keep in the back of the jeep
Thanks for the kind words. I still have not updated the stove yet but plan to before the winter months to try out in my GI pup tent. I'll let yas know how it works.
Post up pictures if you make one!
Kool idea I got a 40mm can sitting collecting dust might make that into one. Use it as a heater and a cook stove all in one shot. kinda big though. I'll try it anyways and post pics here when I am done.

Thats bad ass, you can prob throw something on top to warm up or cook some food...
Mmm...
Now something pops up in my head.
Jerrycans and Paint cans, those 4 gallon ones, squarish....
I've used those paint cans to build field-expedient ovens, and thei might also be used as stoves.
This one is bit more involved than the one I remember, but you might get the idea.

Hmmm, something similar to dehydrate bananas (i suppose it might work for other fruits too)
