I just recently bought a 590A1 Special Purpose and was looking for a good Side Saddle. I show a few but the reviews were saying they were junk. Thanks for the help.

I just put a standard stock on my '500 to replace the tacticool ATI stock. I plan on picking up a velcro carrier from 3gungear.com

*No professional opinion, just some input that seems logical and cost effective for me.

Reviews for what manufacturers?

This. Some people are apprehensive about using velcro sidesaddles but I have a 3 gun gear SS on my 930 and I like it. Its inexpensive, well made thick material, and the shells are held quite firmly. They seem to hold the rounds better than many polymer sidesaddles. Here is a link:

I was looking at the Tac Star and the scatter gun ones on Brownells and the reviews say they break or bolts strip out

TacStar, Wilson, and SGT sidesaddles are the same.
I've used them since the 90s and never had a problem with them breaking. Properly installed they should be fine.
The 3GG and Vang are good, and the Mesas get good reviews as well.

The only ones that I'd consider on any of my guns would be Mesa Tactical or 3 Gun Gear. Vang has good one too.

The 3 Gun Gear hook and loop will run about $50 less than the Vang. Same method (Velcro) so I'm not sure why the price differance.

Because they are not the same method. The 3GG attaches the pile Velcro directly to the side of the receiver with an adhesive. The Vang attaches to the receiver via an aluminum mounting plate, replacement ejector screw and steel thumb screw trigger pin.

The big silver dot is the thumbscrew trigger pin. It was designed to not need tools for removal other than a shell rim or coin.
The 3GG is a LOT cheaper, and will work fine for pretty much anybody that doesn't want to use a hardmount carrier.

Thanks for shedding light on that for me as I did not know the exact mounting part(s) that Vang utilized.

It is kind of a hybrid TacStar/SGT/Wilson and 3GG system. Mounts like a TacStar, dismounts like a 3GG.
I don't know that there is any particular advantage to the Vang over the 3GG. It holds one less round, which may matter to some, and it doesn't attach directly to the side of the receiver. Some people aren't completely comfortable with the idea of an adhesive attachment. The Vang is vertical while the 3GG is angled. Some may prefer one versus the other. The Vang comes with a S/N cutout, the 3GG can be cut for the same.
Either way, they both work very well with other Velcro systems or other carrier cards.

Here's the 8-shell side saddle from Mesa Tactical on my 590A1.

Install was fairly easy. The screw fit on the saddle's rear screw hole was a bit tight, but nothing horrible.

Only thing that might bother some people is that there can be contact between your left hand and the rear most shells (depending on how you set them up) while shooting left handed. YMMV, of course. Seems like a pretty solid rig so far when I ran a bunch of #00 through the shotgun with the saddle fully loaded brass-down.

I really like the mesa tactical its a little too long but that can be fixed. Where the best place to get one?

We have 150+ Mossberg 500s and 590s at my job, all of them have the Tacstar type side saddle mounted on them, and have for better than ten years. I have not noted any breakage on any of these we have deployed.

We have 3 Gun Gear sidesaddles in stock for the Mossberg.

tpd223,

I still owe you a breaching barrel. Shoot me a PM or e-mail with your shipping address.

Thanks

yeah, it is a bit long... you can see how it protrudes slightly at the rear corner in my pictures. if you wanted to be aggressive about it, you could probably just grind down the aluminum and make it a 7-shell holder if it really bothers you. :D

i'd suspect that if you choose to run a pistol grip (despite the awkwardness of reaching the tang safety), the length of the side saddle would be even less of an issue.

i ordered mine from Tommy at Smartgunner (http://www.smartgunner.com/90340.aspx)... fast, reasonable prices, and free shipping. can't beat that! of course, he also carries the six-shell version if you are so-inclined... i think there is a four-shell variant as well.

You could just get the Mesa 6-shell holder instead of the 8-shell. Brownells had them in stock Tuesday when they shipped my 6-shell. I prefer it over the 8-shell.

ETA: Looking at mine, the back of the 6-shell holder comes even with the front of the safety.

Agree! I considered the Tac Star for the price and know people that run them with no problem. I chose to go with Mesa Tactical. You can not deny the high quality of Mesa Tactical. I run a 6 shot side saddle. Check out Tacticalshotgunner.com...the site is set up for ease of use and has a lot of product info.
