I know that the Carbine is the popular choice for ARs, but I was wondering if I'm the only one going old-school with an A2 clone.... full stock, 20" barrel, carry handle sights.

You're not alone. It's my only (and 1st) AR as of now. Bought it last February and have probably put a good 3,000 rounds through it.

It's all I have right now too. I'm in the final stages of picking out a carbine that I'm going to deck out with a can, optics and such. At that point I might sell the old (but like new!) pre ban 1994 Colt Sporter.

Thanks Templar, I hadn't really thought of "vintage" or retro.

Funny, 6 or 7 years ago those were not really that retro. The AR15/M16 platform has come a long way in the last few years. Course, I'm old enough to remember when the A1 was high speed low (GTFOMW) drag :D

Until that day,

I've been seriously considering the idea of getting a basic, national match A2 style setup for target shooting and competition.

However, if you mean to "go the A2 route" and use something along those lines for any serious work, then no, as such a rifle would fall short of my needs in that area.

Robb at Virginia Arms just finished putting my A2 together a month or so ago. I wanted one because thats what I had for my first ten years in the Corps as well as what I took to OIF 1. Its a fun rifle and is good to use every now and again just to get away from BAD's and RDS's, back to basics you know?

I'm building an A2 now for Service Rifle competition. Wilson Combat lower & lpk, White Oak upper w/pinned rear sight, and Geissele trigger.

Just waiting on WOA to finish my upper...

Maybe not A2, but I know a number of guys with A1 stocks for NM and other applications, because the A1 stock is a little shorter and easier to shoulder in certain applications. Just the small amount allows you to square your shoulders up in the sitting position.

I have a 20" HBAR with an A2 stock grip everything. the only non A2 mod is a free float tube and the match barrel and trigger. I had a collapsible stock on there but the balance was messed up. never felt right so I stuck the A2 on there.

I remember asking the same thing here a long while back. The general consensus was that the 20" guns didn't do anything any better than the carbine unless you're shooting at distance. I think I remember Pat Rogers referring to them as "fence posts". ;)

I prefer the A2 rifle. I built mine using a Colt M16A2 HBAR barreled upper, receiver extension, stock and a Colt 6520 Lower.

Well, I have gone half way....I have a 20" 1/7 Colt A2 rifle barrel on a BCM upper and BCG on an LMT Defender 2 stage lower that has an M4 or carbine type stock. Run it with an H buffer.

Of my 4 AR's, this one is without a doubt the favorite gun to shoot. My niece and nephew (10 and 9) can shoot this gun all day and enjoy it without being beat up or have a sore shoulder. It's fun and easy for them because they can collapse the stock to their liking and lay the fore end on the bench rest. I also have an Eotech on it so it is very intuitive and fun for them. The 2 carbines or even the mid length I have they don't care for in comparison.

The recoil on this setup is low and that's what make's it fun and easy to blast out a 30 round magazine in 8 seconds (which my nephew does every time! :). The gun barley moves and there is zero muzzle lift.

Some people thing this set-up looks funny and I get comments that are either "Ha! that looks stupid!" or "That is a cool idea, that is sweet!". I dont care. It works, it's 100% and it is my bug-out rifle that I trust my life to.

Man, those are great looking ARs. Much better looking styling, to my eyes, than the latest incarnations, functional improvements notwithstanding, of course.

I built an A1 for my wife and just got done building an A2 for myself. I have several carbine length gas systems for serious needs, but these two are a real pleasure to shoot in comparison.

My first BR was the 20" Colt Match Target ! I always used the A1/A2's while in the Military so it was just natural to stick with it! My 16" Carbine is a A2 as well!:D

I really want to build an FN (mostly) A2 for nastalgia, but can't justify the cost right now. Once I have two identical carbines with Aimpoints, Surefires, etc. I will look into the A2 build more seriously.

Not to get crazy, but I did always think that a spare 20" A2 would be smart for a SHTF scenario. That's an extra weapon that you could hand to your in-law, uncle, neighbor or anyone else that has served in our armed forces in the last 45 years and they would most likely be familiar with it.

For nostalgia or real use?

ones FDE ones Foliage. :D

I wanted a Colt A2 20" HBar 223 upper to go with my Colt 16" 7.62X39 rifle purchased years ago so picked one up 4 months after the first Colt purchase. I switched the upper out a couple of times then put the upper in it's box and put it back into the safe. It came back out a couple months ago after I built a Spike's Tactical lower, RRA lower parts kit, RRA 2 stage National Match trigger and A2 stock. She shoots sweet and I actually like it best of my three AR's.

I busted out the 20" A2 Hbar last few weekends and put the M4-1000 on it. Iraqgunz calls it the muskett.

Took it out again before the Superbowl with Papabear and pounded the heck out of his steel with it. It's just so nice to plopp down with a pack in the dirt and reach out and touch them.

I like the A2 stock for certain style ARs. My most recent build was a M16A4 replica but in the past I've enjoy my A1/A2 style stocks on 20'' barreled uppers.

I like the standard A2 just fine. I have a Colt Sporter R6551 that is still my favorite AR. I've used a standard M16A2 for plenty of what y'all call "serious work" and it does just fine.
