My brother and I are avid coyote hunters. During the winter months we feed cows and hunt coyotes. We have a large farm and ranch in central Oklahoma and coyotes are a huge problem for cattle, turkey, quail, and deer populations. Every winter we enter in at least one coyote calling tournament. Last year we placed 2nd with 11 coyotes in two days in the Hinton, Ok coyote calling contest. This year we placed 5th at Elk City, Ok Western Oklahoma Coyote calling contest with 8 coyotes in one day, and we placed 3rd at the Blanchard, Ok Central Oklahoma coyote calling contest with 3 coyotes, that was a tough day to hunt with high winds and temperatures reaching 80 degrees.

Now that the contests are pretty much over for us this year, we hunt them in the mornings and evenings before and after work. With the foot or so of fresh snow, coyotes and bobcats are moving. We went out tonight and called in a big male coyote. He came in once, saw us and bolted. So we switched the call and he came back in to investigate, he obviously didn't know what we were but knew something was up. I barked when he was at 80 yards circling down wind and made him stop. He stop behind a tree and all I could see was his back half. I crowded the tree with my reticle and shot. I hit him I'm the middle of his body and he ran about 20 yards, spewing blood and expiring in the bottom of a dry creek bed.

Very nice work, I am sure you loose many calves to those 'yotes each year too.

What calls do you like? Here we are only allowed to use mouth calls, no machine calls.

Here is one I shot @ 198 laser measured yards in my backyard:

I've coyote hunted 3x now in past month and so far haven't had much luck. My buddy and I called in a bobcat on monday, but we got up and moved without seeing him until we spooked him and saw him running across the pasture. I have been trying to use a Edge Expedite Mighty Predator e-caller and a Edge Expedite Quiver Critter, so far without much luck. The bobcat was called in with a Johnny Stewart cottontail distress mouth call that my buddy was trying. We're both hunters, but neither of us have a clue about predator hunting.

I'm just curious, are coyotes really that bad of a problem that they need to be killed in such large numbers? I'm not doubting or debating, I'm honestly curious. I've seen video after video on where people will kill 10+ coyotes a night, three days a week, all summer long. On the surface, it reminds me of when we killed buffalo back in the 1800's.

Don't mistake me for a carebear - I'm a hunter, I've just don't know much about hunting coyotes.

Coyotes are very adaptable animals and they can flourish just about anywhere. One example is the fact that they have traveled across frozen waters to Newfoundland, where 20 years ago there were next to no coyotes, and now they have completely inhabited the area to the point that local hunters organize their population control in order to protect their moose and caribou populations. I think I read that coyotes destroy something like 60% of all moose and caribou calves there. In rural America, they can pose a serious problem to farmers and their livestock. They have also been known to spread canine disease to domesticated dogs. The fact that they can be such a nuicence in the ways of killing livestock an domesticated pets, coupled with the fact that they can replenish their numbers so quickly in a different location leads me to the conclusion that there is no reason not to control their population if your area has a problem with them.
