View Full Version : A night with a soldering iron....added M&P45.
I had convinced myself that I would never have any desire to stipple my handgun. I never thought I would do it, until last night when my buddy called and said he was messing around with wood burning. I told him to keep the iron hot and I was coming over with some stuff. I had never tried stippling before, so I practiced on a pmag at first, then I did a Troy rail panel, then the large backstrap for my M&P. I found a pattern I liked alot, and after I put the backstrap on the pistol I knew I needed to do my medium one and the front strap too. I got up the nerve and just went for it, and here is what it came out looking like.

I would still like to fill in the rest of the side of the frame with a less aggressive pattern. This pattern, however, gives me alot more grip than the finer and less aggressive type patterns I tried, yet the composition of the plastic on the M&P keeps it from being too abrasive. I liked it so much, and I happened to have my rifle with me as well so...

The plastic of the MOE, the pmag and the Troy rail panels is harder than the frame of the pistol, and they came out VERY gritty. I am going to try sanding on it with some 320 grit to smooth them out some. Anyways, I hope you guys like the pictures and thanks for looking!
Very good job. I don't think I'd do anything else to it. Looks great like it is,and should give you all the"grip" you need.

Looks good, what tip did you use?
Looks good. How long did it take you to do that?
I used a medium sized rounded tip. Thanks for the complements guys.
I spent about an hour on the pistol. It doesn't take long at all with that big of a tip and the type of pattern I used.
I'm jealous!
I love that M&P Stipple job!!
Its gorgeous ! Looks like a professional job.
Thanks guys. If you can get your hands on something to practice on, give it a shot. I practiced for about an hour before doing this and that was the first time I ever messed with stippling, and I wouldn't say I have any natural aptitude for it either:no:.

POST A BETTER PIC OF THE PMAG PLEASE!
Right now I just have some skateboard tape on mine but this might be something I might wanna do. Pretty sweet!!
I love the way that turned out on the M&P. I've been trying several different techniques and tips on old PMAGs but that is the one I've liked the best. Going to try it out on a PMAG and then finally get busy with the M&P.
Looks good man! Here is a great stippling tip & another reason why I quit drinking: Don't ever EVER stipple anything with alcohol nearby. My thumb reference marks on my M&P look horrid! ; )

I went ahead and filled in between the front and back straps with a sandpaper texture. I also went ahead and stippled every other part of the frame that my hands make contact with, including the underside of the beavertail and the area on the bottom of the trigger guard where my left index finger goes. I could not be happier with the results. The pistol gives a VERY positive grip that will not slide around at all. For the large texture on the front and backstraps, I used a tip that resembled a .22 LR round nose bullet. For the sandpaper texture, I used a very small pointed tip. In all, I have about 2 or 3 hours of stippling time in this gun. I am thinking about doing my LCP now.

Mhanna, that is the best looking stippling job on an M&P I have seen. that's what I'm going to base my stippling on after I've practiced on some more PMAGs.
Round of golf, anyone?

Have you shot with your grip work yet?
Just an observation but the area where the trigger guard meets the grip looks like it will be a nightmare for your middle finger's knuckle.
I really like the finer stippling you did. I need to find a tip that size. You don't have a part number or anything do you? Or a pic of the tip you used...
Jaydoc, post some pictures up when you get it done. I would love to see it!
And yes I have shot it, but not for any serious length of time. I put 3 mags through it yesterday and so far there are no problems with it as far as hurting the hands goes.
Thanks for the complements guys. Ill post pics after I do my LCP:D
I do not have the tip on hand, it is my buddy's wood burning kit. All I can say is that it is a pointed tip. Not like the pointed tip with a radius on the end the size of a ball point pen tip like most soldering irons come with, but a pointed tip you could poke a hole in someone with. Pointy. lol

Wow, that is very, very, very nice. It's the first home stippling job that's made me want to try to stipple my own guns. Thanks for the inspiration!
Okay, Here is the last of it. Sorry for posting so many pictures. The LCP came out really nice. Should be much easier to hang on to while shooting. Before, it had a tendancy to climb up in my hands during firing. I will report back after I shoot it and let you know if the stippling cures that problem.

That is what I want my M&P to look like after stiple it. Any way we would get a brand and model of that wood burning kit? Maybe the place where your friend purchased it?
That's the best stipple job that I've seen on a lcp. Good job!
It is a Model BT-30 iron from Hobby Lobby. This is the exact kit I bought yesterday.

Great looking gun!
I'm wanting to purchase a M&P and if I do I was going to venture into the stippling arena. Anyway we can get a pic of the pmag? I was also going to try first on a pmag.

Sweet, I just ordered the set for $15 shipped. Can't wait to try it on my M&P 9c and Kahr PM9. Is there any trick to it? How long do you have to hold it on each dot? Awesome pictures, hope mine looks half as good as that.
How do you keep a straight edge on the stippling? Tape as a marker?
Great work! One of the best stippling jobs I've seen.
On the grip insert and the front of the grip I'm assuming you started along the outside and followed the same line row by row, right? How did you do the finer stippling? Mask off your lines with tape then go in a straight line? Or was it more random?

+1 I made this same misteak on my MP9. i Did the grips fine then one day i did my thumb pads after one or two. The lines are about as straight as a snake. Looks like shit but its a tool.

I did ONE PMAG last night and it took FOREVER... And my EMT shears...
My eyes were tired from the constant focus and my fingers and wrist hurt from the tedious placement and pressure of a pointy tip soldering iron over and over again...
My hats off to the OP for his patience... But it was fun! And the grippy difference is substantial...
