My friend just got a new AR and when he took it apart to clean it after taking it to the range he noticed that the back of his firing pin has very small burrs on it that weren't there when he first bought the rifle. Is this a problem and if so what might be some possible reasons for the burrs?

is the face of the hammer smooth?

Yeah its smooth. And I guess the burrs are more around the edges of the firing pin.

Are they sharp burrs or is the pin mushrooming? Might be a case of soft material. A pic would help.

They aren't all that sharp. He can only feel them. Not really see them

The hammer is most likely hitting the pin shroud while cycling...

Can we get some more info? What type of AR, BCG, etc...etc...?

Is the firing pin retaining pin beat up also?

If it is then it's probably due to unshrouded carrier.

My Colt with an unshrouded carrier did that. I switched to a fully shrouded carrier and it took care of the problem.
