FNG technical question.

Hey all! i was wondering if anyone could link me to a guide(s) for some of the following: Barrel profiles with regards to why a person would want/need a type of barrel m4, government,heavy etc and The types of gas systems,mid-length,carbine etc. Im asking because i cant find a good guide anywhere , ive seen comparisons but those mostly give technical measurements that dont really help me decide real world usefulness of anything. Sorry for such a newb question. i tried the search and couldnt find what i was looking for.
