thanks again guys. glock21xxx nailed it , she's an old gen1 N6 leonidas. the rails were made for noveske by SWS (superior weapons systems). they do make dpms style barrel nuts to mount their rails but i'm not sure what height the CMMG rail is , if you give them a call i'm sure they could tell you if it's compatible.

Dat sexy Leonidas, doe.
That's the rifle that really got me interested in AR-10s.

It is beautiful. I'm doing a .308 12.5" SBR build and love that rail system.

Not an AR-10 per say. It is a KAC SR-25 Match with a factory Mk11 Mod 0 conversion. It still retains the 24" Obermeyer barrel.

Renegade04,

I have that same rifle. The EMR. Mine still has the carbon fiber handguard.

I have, however, come into a Mk. 11 rail. I don't know if I have another SR25 build in me, but...I don't know if I want to put the rail on my EMR. But I had to wait a while to come into the rail and your pictures just make me more wishy washy.

Anyways. The EMR is a laser beam. I got mine second hand and shoot it fairly rarely because it is 21 years old and I have been told the older barrels can be a bit touchy-touchy. Nowhere near as much as my other 308.

If I did want to swap rails, does KAC still offer factory conversion?

Longpike barrels may not be en vogue, anymore but I think it looks more evil.

From what I was told, this factory conversion was only done to a few of the SR-25 Match rifles. They were done around twenty some odd years ago. I have not seen or heard of any Mk11 Mod 0 factory conversion done since.

Thanks for the reply Renegade. I guess I'll sit on it. I might give it another go or put it on a MATEN set.

But that is a pretty set up. Wish I had an old waffle mag. But I shudder at how much they'd go for

Finished this after a few months of gathering parts. It started out as a Quadrail Maten Monolithic with an 18" Shilen Mid-Tactical barrel, which I picked up from a fellow Snipershide member (thanks again Al).
I wanted a much lighter "5.56 replacement" battle rifle, so I tried to get it as light as I practically could.

So I sold off the Monolithic Quad, and picked up a standard Maten upper to build on.
16" Aero/Ballistic Advantage barrel
14" Fortis Switch Rail
2A Armament Ti FH/Comp
SLR Sentry 7 Ti Adj Gas Block
BCM Gunfighter Mod 3 large latch
Geissele SSA-E (came with lower)
Magpul STR
308 buffer & spring
BCM Gunfighter Mod 2 Grip
BCM KAG Handstop
BAD Ambi Selector

Optics:
Vortex PST 2.5-10x32 Mil/Mil on 20 MOA ADM Recon
Aimpoint T-1 on Larue LT-724 offset.

With the Vortex on top, it just becomes too heavy to be anything close to the maneuverability of a 5.56, and the windage knob occludes a lot of the T1. A small riser should fix that.
I now fully understand and respect the benefits and strengths of the lighter 5.56 AR platform. The rifle is light, the ammo light, it's fast, it's accurate and still very powerful.

The Shilen 18" with a Bipod may be the better setup as a DMR/Sniper platform with this build..

All in all, I think it came out looking bad as f@#& and shoots even better. The SLR adjustable gas block will let me tune it to any ammo I want.
The Shilen can shoot sub MOA, and the Aero/BA can probably shoot 1 MOA, but not from this shooter. But the Aero is on there as a long lasting battle rifle barrel with its QPQ lining.

The Fortis Switch is probably the best rail I've ever seen and used. Looks amazing, and the quick release works great.
Even though you're supposed to be able to just pull the lever out and pull it off, I find it easier to just give the allen key on the right (ejection port) side a half turn to loosen it up a bit, then pull back the lever. Putting it back on, I lock the lever down and give it a half turn back to make sure it's snug. Makes adjusting the gas really easy.

The sad part is, I'm now on the fence about selling it. I like building more than shooting sometimes. And I'm looking to fund another hobby.
It's a tough call, it's sooo much fun to shoot.

That Mega with the BA 16" looks very slick. I am in the process of doing a build with that same barrel, albeit it on an AR-10 receiver, and the same recce-ish/battle rifle. What BCG are you using?

Thanks,
I've seen mixed reviews on that barrel, but it's been running perfect for me.

Just a standard DPMS style BCG. No branding or markings of any kind on it. Properly staked and headspace matches both barrel chambers, and haven't had one malfunction. (besides during the gas tuning, but thats all part of the process)

Good luck with your build.

Posted this in a thread about .308 suggestions... Figured I would repost here as well. I've had my S&W M&P10 for about 2 years now. At first, I was really disappointed in its performance. It seemed to have real problems cycling low pressure ammo and just had lots of teething issues in general. I decided to have a buddy of mine who is a qualified gunsmith tear it down and put it back together for me to see if he could figure anything out. When I did this, I changed the gas block and put a Troy quad rail on it and I also decided to hydrodip the rifle in that multicam tiger stripe (not really my favorite, but it works well here in FL). After it was torn down and reassembled, I haven't had any problems with it. Shoots low pressure and high pressure loads, both suppressed and unsuppressed without any issues. I didn't ask him what he did, but I guess he tweaked a couple things and now it just runs. I also decided to go with a fixed A2 stock. To do this, I had to call S&W to send me a spacer for the buffer tube because the M&P10 buffer and buffer spring are proprietary.

Optics are a Leupold VxR 3-9, Aimpoint T1 on a KAC offset mount, and KAC offset irons. It's also got a Geissele 2 stage trigger in it and the bipod is an Atlas on a LaRue mount. I don't plan on changing anything else with this rifle. I'm pretty satisfied with it in its current form. I'm waiting to see what DD comes out with next. I don't have a huge need for more than one .308 AR because its primary purpose is hunting and maybe an occasional scoped rifle class. The DD .308 would primarily be for fun shooting and I would keep it simple. But anyway, here's my M&P10:

Ah, you're the guy with the UTG Pro AR-10 handguard. How have you found it? Any issues? How many rounds have you shot through it, etc.? Any shifting of POI?

No issues so far… I've only fired a couple hundred rounds through it at the square range though. No shifting of POI. I had the mounting screws back out on the 5.56 version of this handguard, so I was sure to Rocksett the ones on this one. After doing that I haven't had any trouble out of it or the 5.56 one.

This one has some design differences from the 5.56 one… It is a thicker OD, and it has small retaining tabs that go on either side of the gas block area of the upper, kind of like the retaining clip on a BCM KMR–A, instead of the wide mounting tabs like the 5.56 one. I guess they wanted it to be compatible with different uppers from various manufacturers. I'm taking it on a 20K Run 'n Gun next month, which will be a pretty good test of it... it's sure to get beat around a good bit.

No question, AR-15. As a fighting rifle, it has the advantage in the vast majority of likely situations due to it's weight, size, and recoil advantages. It is also much easier and cheaper to source spare parts for, due to there being a universal standard.

Ar15 for the following reasons: weight, less recoil, uniformity among parts, cost, handling/maneuverability, more ammo availability

But the AR10 does have advantages in range and stopping power. If 308 ammo was cheaper and if there wasn't the disconnect between manufacturers you would see more AR10 sales in my opinion. But since companies are finding ways to make the platform lighter and muzzle brakes and comps are getting better you are seeing more companies offer complete AR10's. I have a colt 901 on the way and I'm excited to get into the 308 AR world.

It's only spray paint, brake cleaner takes it off. That's a trijicon 1-4, not enough optic for it. When I figure out what I want I'm gonna get it cerakoted kryptek so I can do the optic at the same time

Started with an Armalite AR-10A. Swapped furniture, trigger, bolt and added a 16" SS rifle gas barrel. NF 2.5-10 ready to go but may end up with a 1-6.

Pappabear, this is Blackfoot 7, roger. Other than resting the gun on a bean bag and confirming the offset's zero, I have practiced engaging targets at close range with them. They're very effective in that regard, but if you're lacking upper body strength and endurance then you will most certainly reach muscle failure in a relatively short time, especially in this configuration. Nevertheless, I'm confident they will serve me well in a pinch if called upon to do so. I love shooting irons and I put back-ups on every gun I'm able to.

Postman brought me a new optic this morning, I think my ECC is complete now. Just waiting on my KAC 7.62 QDC can purchase to go through. Here's the run-down on the gun:

SR25 ECC with E2 bolt
KAC MAMS brake
NF 2.5-10x24 Mil/Mil
NF 30mm Ultralight mount with 20MOA built in
Aimpoint T2 w/ KAC offset mount
KAC 45 degree BUIS
Surefire M600U w/ Haley Strategic mount
Magpul MIAD and STR

The 45 degree sights might be overkill. I was worried that the standard irons wouldn't clear the scope when mounted, so I zeroed the 45's last week before the scope showed up. Looking at it now, I think the standard irons would clear, and I might re-install them later. The 45's do co-witness with the T2 though, which is kind of neat

Been going over how I want to do my .308 and yours is pretty much perfect. Granted I'll be doing it much more budget friendly but I think that's a winner.

As of this moment, I do not have plans to rattle can paint this rifle a I do most of my other AR's.

Is there any chance you might be willing to share some of your paint jobs and the process you went through, taping up etc please? I really want to do something other than jet black for my 308. It may not even matter, but it's a 100% woods gun and I figure if I'm in camo my gun may as well be too if I can swing it. Doesn't even have to be camo could be a sand or earth green, but not ideally black b/c it really does stand out like a sore thumb right now. Thanks

Pulled the V7 selector switch and replaced it with a short throw BAD-CASS. They are both great parts, I'm partial to the BAD-CASS

Also you can see the difference the Forward Controls EMR-C makes. Duffy has commented that this is the perfect replacement on the LR-308 because the mag button is taller. It really looks good, has excellent purchase and is finally the correct height.

Ever have those builds where just nice things happen during parts acquisition? I bought this anti-cant on the E&E. Problem was, it didn't work. The Seller kindly refunded my money. I held onto it for a while, then finally on a whim contacted US Optics, just to see if there was shim or something I was missing. (The mount would not come close to tightening on my rail.) US Optics wrote back and said, "Oh that's our Gen 1, we haven't produced those in over 10 years. But send me your mailing address and I'll mail you a new one." And so they did. I have the old one in my shop, right on one of my a magnetic bars. Right in front of me as I'm working. Just to remind me that there are still random acts of kindness even by big names like USO. Hats off to them, and it just makes for a good memory regarding this build.

Thanks Pappabear, I appreciate it. It's an excellent shooter. I've shot sub MOA out to just under 300 yds. That's the limitation on the land I train on.

The LaRue target on the left was my 100rd zero. The target on the right was off prone/bipod at my little range I train on.

I don't have pics for the 300yd shot, I shot steel and ended up shooting same target with pistol, but this is as accurate of a rifle as I have built. I am very, very pleased.

How are you liking the SLR ION handguard? I'm looking at using it for my build

If I had a dollar for every hour I spent looking at handguards, I'd have probably $300 bucks in my pocket. I like the handguard. I'll admit I was drawn to this one because it sort of favored my KAC URX4, with the MLOK available on several sides of the handguard. It's not heavy, but it's also not cheap feeling at all. I prefer the SLR barrel nut, which doesn't require timing like other handguards.

And I know you didn't ask, but I feel I would be remiss if I didn't mention what I feel is one of the biggest advantages I have going with SLR and that's their customer service. On two separate occasions they really stepped up and delivered on customer service. It's nice knowing that a) you're buying a quality product, and b) if something does go south, or you jack up something, they are going to take care of you. I had a little of both and they've been outstanding. I emailed them Monday at almost 8:00 PM, a couple of minutes before 9 PM, Todd emailed me back with an answer. Could have put it off until the next day, but he didn't. I appreciate that level of service.

How far along are you in your build? Also a 308?

We're on the same page then. I was attracted to the ION for the same reason. It doesn't seem like there's much in the large frame AR handguard world that is bargain priced, but I don't mind spending the money on a quality pice with good customer service.

The only things I have toward the build so far are the receivers and lower parts. I have most of it planned out, just need to pull the trigger. I'm currently debating the 16" .308 Faxon medium taper vs the gunner profile. The medium taper is on clearance and the matched BCG is on sale when you purchase them together, but I'm trying to keep it as lean as possible without getting crazy. 3 oz difference between the two probably won't make much of a difference, but I'm indecisive.

What receiver set do you have?

Are the barrels made of the same metal? Same gas profile? One have better reports of accuracy?

Thanks Hammer! Yes it is the UBR Gen2. I’m using a Sprinco Red and. KAK Heavy Buffer, plus the UBR spacer. Since the KAK Heavy is a .308 carbine buffer it’s shorter than a standard AR-15 carbine buffer.

I’ll tell you what, I’ve shot carbine gas AR-15’s that had more felt recoil than my DMR. It is an excellent shooting AR. Gas block is full open with half a turn closed.

I am curious though how an H3 or H4 might shoot....I happen to have one of each and am thinking of testing them out. Just to increase my own knowledge. I really could not be happier with how my rifle performs.

Thank you! I really like how it turned out. There’s only 2 things I’m unsure about: the muzzle brake and the gas block. I don’t really intend on shooting this suppressed a lot, so I may end up switching out the brake for an ASR flash hider. Even though I don’t intend on shooting it suppressed much, I still want to maintain that ability so I may switch out the gas block for an adjustable one down the line.

If you have some good leads on ammo, let me know!

This is the ammo that I use and what was recommended to me for my DMR by the good guys. I’ve tried other ammo from Sportsmanguide, it it turned out to be a lame duck. it was called Hirtenberger Surplus. Waste of money IMO.

For your precision, sub MOA work:175gr Federal SMK Match ammo
200rd/$199.90
My DMR loves his stuff like a Texan loves bbq brisket.

For plinking/other training: MEN 147gr 7.62x51
340/$179 (about .55/rd)
http://www.sgammo.com/product/308-win-762x51-ammo/320-round-case-762x51-nato-147-grain-ammo-made-germany-men-2016-men762a

My DMR also likes the MEN ammo. For the price I believe it’s one of the best you can buy. It’s decently accurate, definitely enough so for me to train with using my plates.

I’ve got dorm Freedom Munitions 175 that I’m in the process of testing. It’s a good price too. However, I have it been using Freedom for a while. But I’m going to give it a go.

You're running a rifle length gas system correct? I've built two 18" mid length 308s in the past. The first one I used a DPMS 308 carbine buffer, with a 308 carbine spring, and it had a pretty soft recoil. The second one I used a Vltor RE10 buffer tube, an Armalite buffer spring, and an H3 buffer. That one had a decent recoil, but in my mind I felt the other gun was softer. That may be due to the barrel in the first one being made by Blackhole, as most people say they're soft shooters. I was always curious to see how the second gun would have performed with an H4 buffer, but I had to sell it due to money problems.

Totally agree PB. I’m expecting it to perform well (the Freedom ammo). I have ran 750 rounds of Freedoms 69gr BTHP and also 600 of their 77gr OTM mostly through my SPR, and both have been a good grouping ammo and pretty consistent which is as important as tight groups. Not a Black Hills, but I’ve picked it up for about .39/rd also.

Is even be happen if the Freedom groups tight up to a certain range. Then I’ll use it within its parameters and then when I can really stretch my legs out to 800+, use the Federal SMK. I’m thinking the lower PPR of the Freedom has to show up somewhere...
I’ll know more when I shoot the Freedom 175, hopefully tomorrow.

Not a Black Hills, but I’ve picked it up for about .39/rd also.

yea, 1.75 doesn't work for SMK's. The brass must be horrendous or mixed brass. I get 1.75 out of surplus ammo. MEN 147's are that good. Once you get to the brass the size of 308 and up, you can't mix brass and expect anything consistent. Even if they are reloads.

Thanks. I try to keep things relatively straight forward. I definitely used premium parts in this build, and the result is an excellent do-all rifle. The only thing that I'm struggling with right now is getting it to function well both with and without a suppressor.

Very nice looking 308! Your hand guard looks familiar. Where did you get the QD sockets? Did they come with? At least they didn’t come with mine. I normally run my sling in the first QD socket of my rails, but with my 308, the base of my barrel is too thick for my sling swivel to seat properly and I have to run it at the barrel end of the hand guard.

I realized after zooming in (on my iPhone) that our rails are not the same, but they are so similar! I’m a big fan of CMT, and have thought about doing a CMT build, just not 100% sure I want to do it with billet.

Thank you!

Faxon 16" mid-gas, continuous taper barrel, 4150 CMV Nitride 1:10 with hybrid Target crown. I had it cryo-treated along with the likely-shitty radical Nitride BCG.

Matrix Arms matched 7075-T6 forged receiver set. Rear cut appears to be Armalite pattern, but top rail is DPMS high dimension.

MEGA Arms/Zev Tech AR10 WedgeLock keymod rail in extended rifle length (14.5") with std titanium barrel nut.

BCM gunfighter CH.

SLR Sentry 7 Ti set screw gas block, installed using my bomb proof method (an amalgam of solid techniques developed from IraqGunz, Grant, and my own experience.), posted about elsewhere on M4C.

Spikes Nitride 304 stainless mid gas tube.

Sprinco AR10 dual extractor spring set installed in bolt.

Vltor A5 RE. Sprinco red spring with optional cryo treatment. PWS H4 carbine buffer (6.8oz), Magpul K2 grip, Geissele SSA-E trigger, BCM GF Stock.

PWS keymod front bipod mount, BCM KAG, IWC keymod QD sling mount.

Capped on the tip with a SiCo ASR trifecta flash hider, mounted using Rocksett, for my Saker 7.62.

I ordered last night a primary Arms Fake-COG 3x prism unit with the etched/illuminated ACSS reticle. I've used several and have been impressed with their performance for the price, so I think it'll be a good first step.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that I drilled the upper for the blind anti-rotation pin that was also provided with the handguard. The upper had a dimple for the pin already present.

Heavy AR10 std Carbine length heavy buffer

Will do. The BCG will eventually be replaced by an LMT enhanced. But, I've had a difficult time finding those and I paid precious little for this one.

Word is that the UK contract is eating up all the 7.62 enhanced BCG production capacity for now.

Unless you’re looking for the FA. I suspect you are, but just in case.
I did not realize LMT made a enhanced BCG for the 308. I run them in my all my 5.56 SBR’s, because of the longer dwell time for a short barrel makes sense. Is that applicable for a longer barrel and gas system? Back from a long weekend hunting trip and haven’t had coffee yet, so it’s still a little foggy upstairs.

Yeah, I prefer an FA version...but only due to the added mass it would bring. however, if the SA version is the same mass as the FA then I want whichever is cheaper, lol. I honestly need to familiarize myself more with LMT's 7.62 SKU codes.

I use an LMT enhanced carrier on my 11.5" 5.56 suppressed, my 16" intermediate gas suppressed, and my 18" rifle gas suppressed/unsuppressed without a single issue. In fact, the 11.5" suppressed and 16" BRT Optimum barrel intermediate gas suppressed share the exact same A5 equipped lower. ;)

I would submit that the longer dwell time would be beneficial due to the increase in pressures we've seen with commercial .308 Win ammo, which I intend to use, as compared to the std ball used during the original AR10's development. I also think it's no accident that these enhanced BCG's were a specifically called-out item for the LMT L129A1 and LM308MWS contracts according to some sources I have. For the later contract, the likes of the HK417 and FN SCAR-H were beaten (and others). The LM308MWS contract competition required full function with both RG 155gr and M80 FMJ.

So, considering the breadth of ammo power within what constitutes a US available .308 Winny commercial loading, I think that the added dwell time from the modified/lengthened cam-pin track, the twin-entry gas manifold ports into the toroidal expansion chamber from the gas key, the three exhaust ports, and the added 4th exhaust port that vents directly from the expansion chamber......these are all very good things for both reliability, parts life, and they just can't do anything bad to accuracy either (though I certainly don't have any data to show they aid it).

I did some reading of the L129A1. It seems like it fit the bill for what UK MoD was looking for. I think, at least from what I read the BCG is a SA, both on the L129A1 and the LM308, which makes sense as they are semi-auto weapons.
To be honest I actually don’t know if they make. FA version. Not sure why they would if their applications are all semi. Unless it is just to have more carrier mass. I haven’t seen a FA version. Kind of assumed, but that was before my first coffee.
Also good points and good food for thought.

I actually am finding that I cannot locate a SKU for an LMT FA 7.62 BCG or carrier. Period. Either in their catalog or on any vendor's website.

As I said before, as long as there is enough mass, I'm totally cool with an SA carrier. I'm literally indifferent about it as long as the mass is there. That was the rub way back when for FA carriers.....they had quite a bit more mass (just over an ounce additional....if not more). But, as you said, FA is simply not an issue for any sane human in 7.62. Too much recoil, and I ain't that rich (ammo cost would be a friggin mortgage payment!).

I think it’s safe to assume they don’t manufacture a FA version, so go ahead and get the semi one already. I want to know how it functions! I if I could have a full auto 7.62, I would n a NY second. I’d get a 2nd mortgage if necessary. I mean you cannot tell me that you can’t find purpose for a crew serve weapon! Lol

Boy seeing this 308 resting in the CMR rail is not helping me be patient. I was just telling JWKnutson that I’ve been turning over another AR-10/LR308 build but utilizing a CMR rail like this one. Been out shopping barrels. Looking at all my options.

But this is pretty close what I’m looking to do, with a few changes here and there.

Mind if I save this for future reference?

Brought out the old school Armalite today. I’ve had this thing for 20 years.

Started as a standard AR-10B A4 20” Rifle:

Trijicon Accupoint in a B square mount - hot stuff in 1999 !
Went back to Armalite for their “upgrade” program about 10 years ago (internals)
Other upgrade over the years
Armalite match trigger
Armalite FF handguard and Gas block
Swapped the A2 stock for CAR received extension with magpul STR

It will do about 1” at 100 with match ammo if I do my part. 2-3 MOA with ball.

LMT reliability all the way - meaning I never experienced an FTE/FTF with my normal 308 ammo. The one and only time I had issues cycling was with some Seller & Belloit 200gr subsonic ammo. (even with my can) I've seen other subsonic ammo advertised that it will cycle in an AR-10, but the reviews were about 60/40 cycling vs. having issues.

Running M80 or Federal SMK 168 and 175, ran like a dream. I think the next 308 I do, if it has a 16" I'll definitely go the rifle gas route, even if I have to cut down.

It's finished... sort of. What I mean is that it's finished enough that it can be test fired, and played with. I'd still like a LPVO, and a light, but she will shoot. Plans are to take her to the range and do function checks, and zero of the irons soon. The scope on it is an old Nikon M308 that was on my 5.56 for a while. I could use it,but the goal of this gun is actually not as a precision gun, but just a heavier carbine. Sort of a lightweight MBR. I will use the scope to see what kind of groups I can get out of her, but she will get a red dot, or a LPVO. She'll be just irons for a while, as I'm fixing to plunk down money on my first can. But here she is. Finished her off with the Lantac enhanced BCG, a Raptor charging handle, and the JP silent capture spring. (heavy version with extra tuning springs)

Yeah, it's light, sturdy, simple, inexpensive, and has QD sling mounts. I love it. Same rail I have on my SBR, so I just copied the recipe so they would match. I also just duplicated it on a 10.5 PSA pistol upper I picked up on the cheap.

I was thinking about doing all my ARs like this, but I'm gonna leave my RECCE alone. It has a Troy Alpha on it. I really like the feel of it because I don't use a VFG on that one. I actually like the feel of the Alpha rail much better, but you have to add rails to it to mount stuff on there. That bulks it up. If there were direct mounts for a light, and grip like the M-lok, I'd have all Alpha. Too bad Troy didn't develop it like that. I had to get a Noveske QD sling mount for it.

Damn ARs are so nice how you can build them to suit your exact taste....

Why all those VFG?

Can't speak for everybody, but I have more control of the weapon with one, and it's a lot more comfortable on my wrist. Especially that second part.

I grab up high with three fingers around the grip, my index finger along the bottom of the rail, and thumb along the top of the rail, or over the top if I'm using the light. Those three fingers pulling the weapon into my shoulder make for a very stable platform. The grip is held between them, and the palm so I can tilt the weapon either way with the slightest twist of my wrist. Different things work for different people...

This is my 3rd 308 caliber large frame rifle. I've tried to learn from each and incorporate that knowledge. My last AR-10 was an LMT MWS (16" rifle gas cut down from 20") on a Mega MATEN lower. GREAT FREAKING RIFLE! But it was super front-end heavy. To the point of giving my jacked up shoulder issues after a couple of hours of running and gunning. So I knew then my next 308 project was going to be lighter than the MWS.
I've not been in a rush, slowly acquiring parts here and there and finally got the last pieces in to finish it up about 0330 this morning.

It weighs in w/ an empty mag at 9.9 lbs (with optic). Quite the difference between this and the weight of my MWS. At 16" it's a maneuverable rifle and should work great in the battle rifle role that I planned for back when I put this project on paper almost a year ago. I wanted a rifle I could run and gun with that delivered a heavier payload than my 5.56 guns. That said, I toyed with SBRing a shorty, but in the end for a variety of reasons decided to go with the 16".
I should get it to the range this Saturday and will provide some feedback on function and then do a more detailed write up in the custom build thread after I work out any kinks and go over my parts choice and why. Once I get 500-1000 rounds through it and I'm 100% solidified on my setup, I will break out the Aervoe and camo spray the crap out of this thing. I don't mind this look, but it looks exactly like my MWS and I want to do something different with this one.

RobertTheTexan build specs on the rifle? That thing is awesome!

Thank you Drew. I’m actually in the process of getting a new barrel. I was experiencing some issues with the early gen 16” Rainier Arms Ultra Match barrel and so Rainier is sending me a brand new one that has a different gas length than the one in the pic. I’ll post in the custom build thread (and provide a link to that post in this thread) when I get the new barrel, because that potentially could affect the buffer weight/spring choice I currently have and I would rather post the the final fully functioned checked rifle than post a config that might not work. Plus I’ve already changed some parts out - some due to necessity and others because I’m trying/testing that part out. Plus this is more of a pic thread and I dot want to clutter it up with my build list parts and why I chose specific parts for this 308 build.

That said, if you want the build list shoot me a PM. However, I do think it would be best to wait until I get the new barrel mounted and a good function test on the rifle to ensure all parts are working well together and working as advertised. Plus I’m still waiting on a couple of other parts I am changing out. Once I get the parts changed and the new barrel mounted I will provide a detailed write up with some really good pics of the build.

Thanks again for the compliment, I really appreciate it!

I finally finished my first 308 AR build using an Aero Precision M5 Upper/Lower, a Ballistic Advantage 16" Modern barrel, Toolcraft 6.5 Creedmoor BCG, and an SLR Rifleworks 13.7" ION Lite Handguard. Detailed parts list below. She's not light, but she's fun to shoot. Sounds great hitting steel at 200m. I ran about 80 rounds of M80 Ball through her without incident. Tried running crummy Tula steel case and got light primer strikes. Next up is some IMI 168 grain which is what I'm planning to feed her.

I videoed the entire build process with decent lighting and sound. Now I just need to finished editing it and figure out a place to post the videos. Maybe Full30... not sure YouTube would be the best place.

Heres my contribution. Colt CM762. The only thing Ive done to it is put an Eotech Vudu on it, RailScales g10 dragons, magpul qd and the nickel boron single stage trigger from my Springfield Victor. Waiting on my URR from midwest and then the warcomp is goin on it.

You did very well on your first build and it's a really nice looking rifle - nice and clean. You also used some good parts like your BCG, BUIS, barrel, and rail. How does it shoot? What was your thought process with the 16" 6.5CM barrel? Also what are your thoughts on the PA 1-8? Hows the glass? Decent eye relief? Also what ammo have you ran through it and what does that 16" barrel prefer? Last question, did you consider using an A5 length RE tube rather than a carbine length?

wow, very nice, but then again, anything DD is always awesome. got some nice color complements on there, but you need to shoot the bejeezus out of it, give it some battle scars for street cred! JK, nice build.

Thanks Robert! I've only run about 200 rounds through it. A mix of M80, Tula, and IMI 168gr Razor Core. The barrel is a 16" 308 - it's the bolt that's a 6.5CM "compatible" bolt. I just used that bolt so it would be interchangeable with my next build.

I like the reticle on the PA 1-8 and the eye relief seems fine. I'll have more of an opinion once I get more time behind it. The rifle shot the M80 and IMI 168 Razor Core just fine. It didn't like the Tula at all, but that's not surprising. I was honestly just curious if it would run it and now I know... :)

I have not considered the A5 RE, but I'm certainly not opposed to it. I actually run those on all my AR15 builds. So you can run an A5 RE with just a "standard" Vltor A5 length buffer and a Springco Green spring? Is there a big benefit to running the A5 RE on a 308AR? If it softens the recoil noticeably that would certainly be worth it. I intentionally didn't stake the castle nut yet, so I might just switch it out.

You would use a Sprinco orange spring with a standard AR-15 Carbine length buffer. I use an H3 on my set up. The combination of the A5 extension and the standard carbine length buffer will compensate for the longer length of the 308 bolt carrier.
